Cheers will have to check this one out, enjoying the way P&S is structured, a breath of fresh air after WHFB for too long love it though I do - if GW put a command and control system like this in Warhammer it would be amazing.

I'm from the future. The future of space

It originally was in a GW game set in the Warhammer universe: Warmaster (also by Rick Priestly), though in a less refined form.

And then later in Warmaster: Ancients (also by Rick Priestly)

Basically GW created their own competition by not being able to keep Rick Priestly and screwing over the people who ran their historical division. Basically they had a thriving business with Warhammer: Ancients and Warmaster: Ancients, and products like Legends of the Old West (which used Lord of the Rings rules). There were plans for expanding into other eras like WW1 & 2. Then they had a top down policy shift that they could no longer sell their products through distributors and everything became direct only. Then the division was told they'd have to be charged for their internal administration. And oh, it looks like the historical division is no longer making money. Shut it down and laid everyone off.

Warlord Games is pretty much doing everything Warhammer Historicals was in the right position to do. And now Warlord is doing great, producing new plastic kits, partnering with Italeri for vehicle kits, Osprey for rules publishing. It's been amazing what a bunch of ex-GW people could accomplish once they were free to go after it.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Huge fan of the Hail Caesar rule set; scored them along with the starter Roman Army boxed set.

I was expecting miniatures with a frustration level akin to GW's line of infantry kits, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Romans went together real easily.

The rules themselves are remarkably well written and easy to understand; now I just need to find someone to play with. Heh.

I been trying to find a little summary of them. I just started with Bolt Action so I am curious about Hail Caesar.

Hail Caesar is like a melee oriented bolt action...

Each set from warlord is just an expansion and focus of the same core to make each area have flavor.

Sad warhammer ancients died... they were... and are my favorite rule set ever.

My Thracian army has found a home with hail Caesar though
Few opponents however
I wish historicals would get big with the younger crowd

Thanks

I think it's because fantasy games like Warhammer 40k or Warmachine have more appeal to younger folk like myself. Why command a Heer infantarie division when you can have an army of steampunk Cossacks?

The first army list book ends with Early Imperial Romans, and some of their opponents. It also has a number of earlier lists going all the way back to Ancient Egypt. The second book starts with Rome and its enemies once again, this time with Middle Imperial Roman armies of 3rd Century AD (followed by Late, of course), and ends with a list for the Mongols in 13th Century AD.

Does it follow the same 'dice bag' structure? I have been trying to find a video pertaining to it that just goes over the basics. I impulsively bought the starter set....oops.

Its the same 'dice bag' set up. Its got some extra special rules to add flavor to the period.

Same basic set up, just a little less on independent actions, and more on group moves and multiple combats. Its a solid system that, in my opinion, plays best in 6mm or 1/72. Because of the affordability of the models, and play scale. Massed infantry look incredible, and the way movement works, makes them seem like a cohesive unit.

As to fantasy games being more appealing, thecustomlime: I get my fantasy fix out of roleplaying games. I play warhammer, but I prefer my historical games. I'm 18. Maybe its because I'm majoring in classical civilization, but ancient warfare is the most interesting to me. I like to visualize myself in the game, which is hard to do when some of the troop options are so unrelatable.
I also like to draw ethnic connections to ancients armies. Its interesting, to me, to think that my 50th great grandfather could have served under Hermann (Arminius) or could have been Hermann!
Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
Thanks
Austin

Does anyone have the fairly recent Germania campaign book and care to pass comment?

Was thinking of picking it up, would love to know who the author is if possible (ridiculously, I can't seem to find this anywhere!) and also how it compares to the Britannia book?

Great, thanks BrookM.

Know that I won't ever get round to painting up the legions and barbarian hordes that I would love to have to play these kind of games, but I do enjoy reading these books regardless.

Hail Caesar (along with Black Powder and Pike and Shotte) is a "my turn, your turn" game. So no dice bag. Moves are performed by giving your unit orders (i.e. "move to this location" or "move forward until you can see an enemy unit"), and then performing an order check. Screwing up the order check means your unit failed to move. Rolling well on the order check means that your unit moves further.

That last bit is part of the importance of establishing your orders before you roll. If you order a unit to move 14", but it only rolls well enough to move 12", then it moves 12" toward it's designated destination. If you order a unit to move 6", but it rolls well enough to move 18", then it only moves 6".
