And before someone makes the inevitable "but my college books cost more!" comparison, college text books require people with doctorates a great deal of research, sometimes many years, with a lot of proof reading and hard work to assemble them. As a historian I can attest. I wrote a for fun history book on powerful women and it took me a friggin' ton of research, several days per person. When GW puts that kind of effort into their books then I'll reconsider.

Why are people making the comparison anyway?

Pretty dumb comparison.

Meanwhile, if you've bought the 7th rulebook you'll have rewarded GW for a shoddy product, encouraging them to do more of the same. If you decide it sucks before buying it though,

Meanwhile not everyone straight up assumes that the new rulebook will be rubbish

I'm not assuming it's bad - none of us know whether it's any good. You shouldn't buy it unless you know it's good, ergo you should wait until the reviews are in or you've seen it first hand. That shouldn't be debatable.

"Good or bad" is one of those things that's going to depend entirely on what someone likes about the game.

If you like balanced gameplay, cohesive rules, the lore, the setting, all that stuff? 7th Edition is obviously bad.

If you like making armies composed of Grey Knights fighting next to bloodthirsters and 'nids and making battle noises with your mouth while you play, 7th Edition is obviously good.

I just can't help but laugh at those exalting themselves above playing a new edition before it's even been released or played by the masses yet. Solely reasoning that they'd rather play older editions at that...

I'll be buying the rulebook mostly for the fluff books (and really like that they split the books up into 3 tomes rather than a BRB that is tedious to carry about everywhere.)

For the person making comparisons to college books - Which book will get used more? highly doubt it'll be the text book

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, College books have proofreading and require people with doctorates to write them. That is too funny.

Wow, what college text books do you get? (Genuinely curious.)

Can't we just say that both college textbooks and the 40k rulebook suffer from the same sort of cost scalping?

I know I always thought textbooks were a huge ripoff. I have not equated the same notion to 40k books until they went to an unprecedented two year lifespan (six editions is enough to build a precedent) with 6th, shorting the value of the all of the Collector's Edition's they were selling while they must have had some inkling of the future of 7th in their heads.

I personally know some people who write textbooks for children, I know the way they work and believe me sometimes I cannot even stand their presence due to ethics. My personal experience is quite close to what that article says.

You didn´t offend anyone. Just different opinions.

Anyway, if there is enough people around, there are lots of different options when it comes to play 40k.

I have pre ordered. As have most of my friends and game club.
I've been playing, on and off, since Rogue Trader, and I see no reason to quit now. If anything 7th is answering a lot of my problems, from what I have seen so far.
I am hoping that the new Ork codex will reinforce that.

Its gonna be a rough couple weeks for my wallet.... New rulebook, those tactical cards, followed by the Ork codex and supplements, followed by rumored Chaos models and supplements....

I'm actually looking forward to the arbitrary Fantasy releases in between just to give myself a break!

I've already pre-ordered mine, so there's my answer.

I'm looking forward to the new book, personally. Part of it is because my group is pretty laid-back, aside from one or two people who tend to play almost-tournament lists. We've already made a decision at my FLGS about Unbound, and that's simply that if we find it to be too ridiculous, it's getting the banhammer, and only Battle-Forged lists will be allowed (this is at a store that runs 6-week league cycles, mind you, not just random pick-up games).

The answer is a resounding maybe, I will wait until I and others have had a chance to review the books before determining my stance, no matter what I will be largely liquidating my miniatures collection, only keeping a few elements, which I will likely end up using only for Unbound lists.

Beyond that, as someone who knows higher ups in a textbook publishing firm, most of the costs are actually (apparrently) the results of approval and licensing boards or some nonsense like that (the explanation was given to me a few years back, I don't remember the specifics, other than apparrently the Texas School Board or whatever its called is largely to blame for this as well), and that the price of textbooks without these added costs would be significantly lower otherwise.

Then again why would I want to base it on someone else's opinion? I like to see things myself, rather than follow what someone else says. Even if it's not too good, I won't regret buying it - I enjoyed the previous rulebooks and I keep them all - 6th edition in case of my rulebook was really well done with very few, barely noticable typos, had pretty layout and I could feel the quality of the paper and print. Even if the rules are rubbish, which I don't believe to be the case with 7th so far, I will still enjoy the rulebook as a book and part of my collection. I won't cry out to GW that I felt cheated if it doesn't look exactly the same as the previous one, but I don't think that will be the case here either so.. I will just go to my FLGS, buy it and read there to see how good it is. If it's good, I will play it. If it's meh, I will just keep it on my shelf along with my armies. If it's terrible, I will express my dissatisfaction, but until then I will not share the paranoid "omg, what if it's a piece of steaming crap?!" attitude some people on these forums share. Maybe it's because money is not a problem for me and I won't really be hurt if the purchase turns out to be sub par, I don't know and.. I don't care. I want to see it first hand, I want to take my own conclusions. I bet there will be equal amount of hatred towards it and gak throwing as positive opinions and people will, just as always, divide between those they want to listen to so.. yeah, better read it myself and then show it to my friends to know if their opinions are different.

I ain't payin no 75 bucks for no book. I ebayed the mini rulebook for 6th, and I'll be doing the same for this. If the rumors about the mini book being incomplete are true, I'll download the pdf. 75 dollars is just too much. I am drawing the line there, its just not worth it. GW is just asking for pirates at this point.

I'm buying this one for the three rule books.

Here is why...

1. I annotate the old rule books and give them away to friends interested in the hobby. Rules, fluff, and models all in one spot for the curious.
2. I still want a fluff and picture book that I can hand to people new to the hobby. This edition separates it from the ruled, which is nice.

In the future, I'll likely go down to just buying the rule book.
