True, no matter what the laws are people still aren't going to obey them, simply because it'd "cramp their lifestyle" Drunks get in their car because they don't feel they should have to walk and they give two feths about who else they put at risk. Just like every gakker that decides to text while driving. OMG I can't live for 30 seconds without responding to this text or call regardless of who else I endanger in the process.

In my own personal experience, the people who can't live for 30 seconds without their phones are usually younger.. I've been out with friends (we're all at or around 28) who have a phone go off with a text, or call and usually this is how things go: "hey dude, your phone went off" "yep, that it did..." "You gonna get it?" ... looks at phone screen "in a while"

That's because no one drives in Japan.

They all ride the subway. The same one, in fact.

For added fun, sometimes they all get in one car.

The Japanese ability to stuff people into train cars kind of puts the Mexican stereotype of car sharing to shame. Yeah they might fit like 18 people in 4 seat car, but the Japanese will fit 300 people in a single train car. (groping perverts and all).

This is probably the smartest thing I've heard on dakka all week. Hear hear!!

Have an exalt, cuz I'm totally serious.

Yes, because lets take the responsibility out of everything. Now, every gun must only shoot blanks

Sigh, you should have stuck with me seriously approving your post. It was much better being serious than being sarcastic. Far as I can tell, you had a good idea, then tore it down yourself. But it takes more than just a drunk to figure things out with your thought-now you need a drunk and somebody so callous they don't give a frig about human life. It's a helluva lot harder to get away with. Not impossible, but a lot harder. Especially if you make the charge for using a breathalizer for somebody "attempted murder". I think a lot less people will be willing to help with that looming over their shoulder.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Unfortunately nothing about distracted driving/drunk driving will change until the morons in political office re-visit and update the criminal code to the 21st century, instead of leaving it flailing about haplessly as if it's still the 1930's.

That and do away with complete BS such as reducing the actual sentence for "time served" while awaiting trial, or "good behavior" bonuses equalling early parole and other bleeding heart crap.
You do the crime, you serve the full time!

I got pulled over once when I was a teenager for speeding. Didn't actually get a ticket for it even. There was another time (I had just turned 18) that I was sitting in my car, smoking a cigar, and I got hassled for that. I... really don't know what kids are doing to get pulled over so much. Somehow I doubt it is simply because they are young.

That was back when it cost money to send text messages though, and most people still didn't have cell phones.

I doesnt matter if they take your guns.....you can make your own are buy them off the street. Doesnt matter if you disable the phone from doing tets beyond 15mile, they will find a way to break that. Yeck I have a friend that can turn off my GPS on my phone. I can always have someone blow my car.

Well my area has cops that want action, they chase kids down for walking out of a store by accident, THEY TACKLE THEM. But yeah people speed like over something over 10 miles per over and bang ticket. You didn't stop all the way at the line of a stop sign! TICKET HIM! I am playing water guns with my friend, we are photographed for having water guns.

Plus they think we are all parasites too who only do drugs and have sex.. So that helps ^.^

Huh. I guess you're maybe around Chicago, or maybe just small town Illinois with a cop who happens to have a kid vendetta? I grew up in the Springfield, IL area, and never had any real issues.

Well I am fine with that, but the road is really long and it goes from 35 to 25 in less than a quarter of a mile. So most people don't see the sign

Also, you don't really talk your way out of a 10 mph over ticket even if you're older, at least, I can't.

I'm usually either 5 over, or 15-20 over, because if I'm gonna get a ticket, I'm earning it.

Shrug, I live just above Westchester/NYC on I95. Just try going the speed limit. I go 15 over it on a regular basis (when there aren't traffic jams) and I get passed. A lot. It all depends on where you are when speeding.

So by your standard it'd be perfectly acceptable to drive your car at 90 miles an hour through a school zone packed with kids, cause feth them all, do what you want!

Feel like driving your car at high speeds through a crowded shopping mall? sure!

Rules are for idiots, everyone should just do what they want!

I swear to God, he tanked his own argument because he found me supporting it. This is what happens when you troll people in the past: if you later agree with them, they'll tank their own good ideas to not agree with you.

That is not what he said at all. You don't seem to be able to tell the difference between compliance and control. We all agree that rules are there for a reason. It is not about letting people choose to drive their car through a shopping centre, it is about letting people choose to drive their car in a safe a legal manner. Most people are capable of doing that, yet you want to remove that choice and treat everyone like criminals before they've even started the engine. That is completely different to treating criminals like criminals.

That logic doesn't hold up when you consider things like seatbelt laws. Do you consider it 'treating you like a criminal' that you are required to buckle up before driving? Do you consider a car that alerts you for not being buckled treating you like a criminal?

No, the point is you are still the one who complies with the law, you have the freedom to take your seatbelt on or off at your own convenience. That is different to having a car that won't start unless the seatbelt is engaged, and a seatbelt that won't unlock unless the engine is off. The later removes choice, but is also annoying, dangerous and futile.

Edit:
Actually, yes, the alerts can be annoying and unnecessary.

So what about labor laws and worker safety laws, lets just do away with those because they remove choice from employers. Why should all businesses have to comply with something that protects their workers because somebody else did something bad to their employees?

So what if one of my employees falls into a meat grinder because I don't have protective hand rails mandated by OSHA? Whatever, it's a free country I do whatever I want!

Again, you don't seem to understand the difference between compliance and control. Who said that employers shouldn't comply with labour laws? I think they should. The only person who seems to be saying they shouldn't is you with your strawman examples.

Would be awesome if they could be like the new Robocop movie.. As in, the car drives like normal, but if it detects gakky driving, the computer will take over, but still drive in such a manner that the driver thinks he/she is in control
