Medieval 2 was the pinnacle imo. Then it went downhill as it became more arcadey and buggy with each release. I definitely do not hold high hopes for more Creative Assembly games and will greatly advise against pre ordering them. If the reviews show them to be good then sweet, pick them up.

I don't think you know how EA works. The game will be completely free, and you get to play a scout with a combat knife. If you buy the Space Hulk DLC for $39.99, you get tactical dreadnought armor and an assault cannon.

Have you seen GW's recent sales strategy; it's a match made in heaven!

Have you guys even played TW games? Medieval II is indeed the pinnacle as it has the same mechanics of Rome 1, but much better graphics.

Empire for me however, was the best TW game ever made (I logged 750 hours into it on steam) simply because of its scope. The first TW game where you really feel like you are involved in 18th century geopolitical conflicts. And graphically it is stunning.

As for 40k games...until Space Marine came out, really, the only series worth mentioning in the mainstream market was the DoW series. Everything else was a niche game barely anyone played.

Comic books have an appeal that grimdark gothic over the top sci-fi does not. You can make a movie with one dude in a super suit doing super things against a bunch of ordinary dudes for a safe amount of money. The money required to make a good 40k movie would be up there with Star Wars or Lord of the Rings films.

You see, I think if anything, that the Marvel movies have proven that you can have a multiple movie continuity and still hold people's attention. I also think that Warhammer 40k would be great for this but given the way things are, it's going to have to be an Imperial focus with some memorable villains in it from the Chaos side. This is where I think the Horus Heresy would be the best when it comes to movie material. The entire property has a more cinematic feel to it and there isn't a lot of explaining to do that you would have to do with 40k. I love the Lord Inquisitor project, the animation is spectacular, it involves my favorite faction of the Inquisition as well as the Grey Knights and the script is being written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden (Is it just me or did he take the Grey Knights from Ben Counter?) but the reason I am excited is because I know what is going on. A movie would have a lot of explaining to do even with the Horus Heresy but I really feel that HH would be a better movie franchise.

As far as video games, I also hope that Eternal Crusade does well. From how they have described the game it almost sounds like it is somewhere inbetween a MOBA and an MMORPG which will be pretty awesome.

I am equally surprised that GW hasn't made more of their property and pour so much into things like Black Library. The Horus Heresy especially has gotten a lot of good critical review and there can be a lot done with it.

I played Mark of Chaos, is was a fun game, but a tad easy, especially playing Empire; just have your handgunners firing and your melee troops hold the line and you'll break the morale of everything that comes your way. Still, it had an interesting characters, good story and cutscenes.

I also did play Warhammer online, the thing that made it stands is that you had 'multi-player' scenario/missions all over the main map and also the PvP area was also on the main map, so no need to wait for enough player to join a dedicated PvP map....but sometimes you'll stumble onto the PvP section and turns out there's a band of 15 roaming aorund and there's only you and another guy on your side....

While the parent company THQ went under, Relic was bought out by Sega. What this means for future 40k games from them, I'm not sure, but they're still here. They haven't been squatted yet

Relic still hasn't gotten the franchise though with most 40k games coming from other companies. After Space Marine, Relic hasn't produced any 40k games with Space Hulk, Storm of Vengeance and Eternal Crusade all being from different companies. It seems GW has spread the license out and seems to keep a hold of the license so that companies can't take advantage of it.

Correct. Relic recently even updated Dawn of War 1 to remove Gamespy and port multiplayer over to steam workshop. They've confirmed they'll be removing GFWL in Dawn of War 2 + Chaos Rising for steam workshop in the near future too. DoW2: Retribution was already steam workshop. This shows that SEGA is willing to play ball with Relic to a decent extent which bodes well too which makes me very happy.

Yeah, as people are saying, there have been WHFB games.

I think the reason there aren't as many is nothing more than that a fantasy setting doesn't fit in as many genres as well. For example, I can't really imagine a fantasy FPS that would work well. People have definitely tried... but they tried and failed, largely. The only way to make it even sort of work is to make it third person and to have things be highly scripted (like in WoW), but that's pretty much the opposite of the reason people play FPSs in the first place.

There is some opening in RTSs, of course, but they're RTSs, which are falling rapidly out of style, and there's the possibility for empire builders, but those are all but completely dead by now.

I guess the problem is that it's a lot easier to make a fast-paced action game with guys running around with guns than blocks of infantry with spears.

Plus, there's been a long, and spotty history of GW's IP in games. For every dawn of war, there is a pile of other games that were just bad. Perhaps WHFB just hasn't had its lucky break yet.

Fantasy "FPS" usually have massive role playing elements, thus feeling completely different than your average shooter.

From a purely technological viewpoint, Skyrim and Mass Effect aren't that different, though one is a shooter and one is not. Some of the most successful games in fantasy settings (Elder Scrolls, Witcher, Gothic) have a first person or "over the shoulder" view and have shooting elements for magic and/or ranged weaponry and fail to implement any close combat mechanics more complex than clicking stuff to death with proper timing.

The main issue is WH40k being unique in almost everything it does, while WHFB is just one of many and every single aspect of the background has been done to death by everyone.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I am shocked at the amount of people here ignoring this, but the best Total War ever to exist is based on Warhammer Fantasy:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?1377-Call-of-Warhammer

It is an absolute masterpiece. And they are soon to release v1.6, with skaven, tomb kings and more. If real life (including a war) doesn´t stop the people behind this...

Seriously, do a search for 'call of warhammer' in youtube

Of course, if Creative Assembly is to release an entire TW for WFB, that would be amazing. But this fan-made mod is stunning.

Source? That sounds amazing.

There was a press release in December of 2012 that announced Sega had acquired a WFB license from GW, and then last summer this popped up. http://www.creative-assembly.com/job/130905/associate-producer-warhammer

I don't think much has been revealed about the actual game though.

Now that is interesting. Hopefully it will be better than Mark of Chaos.

It's a shame that Dawn of War 3 sounds like it's on indefinite hold and not in production. 1 and 2 were great and some of the proposed features such as building your army collection were interesting.

I meant his video on Space Hulk if that wasn't clear sorry. Yeah I wasn't sure what the lane thing was called it was *that* uninspiring ; / I *think * know what Kill Team is and it seemed better but still quite bland. Very bargain bin but probably worth a purchase.

They're all very busy people so lining up schedules is pretty hard sadly. Also TB being diagnosed with cancer recently (good prognosis though!) hasn't helped. I watch all TBs starcraft (the Sandisk Shoutcraft Invitational with Artosis last week was AMAZING!) but it doesn't seem like a huge time sink for him outside those large events.
