This struck me when I was going through my steam list and I literally have all the games that have been made for Warhammer 40k and then the thought struck me, with all the games that have come out for GW, the 40k franchise has by far the most success with Warhammer Online closing its doors in December. What is everyone's speculation for this? Is 40k easier to translate to gameplay or is the flavor of 40k appealing to a wider audience? Also, even though Warhammer Online fell from grace, does Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade have a better chance of making it as an MMO property?

40k is unique, WHF is another in a long list of similar games.

Just imagine if Blizzard and GW had got along. World of Warhammer. Way to go G'dub

World of Warhammer would never have happened. Warcraft, the RTS game series, would never have thrived as it did as its own, stand-alone game.

Why WAR failed? Because most MMOs fail. It was a game with a very dedicated focus and very little variety of content. It lacked the things that make games like WoW, EQ and the other major players of the MMO world have. Also, they gave it to Mythic, so there was probably the first mistake. It's been a long, long time since DAoC was in any way relevant to MMOs.

And yet there is no online multiplayer FPS yet.

If I were GW I would go to EA and ask them to use the Battlefield 3 engine- a game they are literally giving away now- and throw some skins on there. Go like tabletop and don't even bother with balance. Charge $10 for a game that is otherwise free and watch the cash roll in. Hell put some Necromunda skins on there and make it a small deathmatch type affair.

As to why it's all 40k, yeah as said 40k has unique elements. Fantasy Battle would be competing in a much larger pool. Orcs, elves, dwarves and dragons aren't exactly unique.

Oh, I had forgotten... there was a WHF game out for the N64 or Sega CD, called Shadow of the Horned Rat, that was pretty good.

yeah the uniqueness of 40k is the big reason for it's sucess. and why people are intreasted in making games for it. Lisencing a game costs money and it brings the complication of having someone looking over your shoulder. warhammer 40k is unique eneugh for it to be worth it. for WFB.. is it really worth it? is the setting unique eneugh from generic fantasy, and bring in a large eneugh outside fanbase to really be worth it. proably not.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

The video game market, especially the MMORPG market, is already really saturated with medieval/Renaissance fantasy. GW's version of fantasy is sort of distinct once you get to know it, but if you're not familiar with GW and you're just glancing through screenshots or looking at box art, I can't imagine any warhammer fantasy games standing out that much against the sea of games already out there.

40K on the other hand, has some pretty recognizable icons. I think Orks especially have a crazy Mad Max sort of feel. Even if you've never heard of 40K before, they're memorable. I really hope Eternal Crusade does well; there is definitely some room for the sci-fi setting in general to grow when it comes to video games.

I mean, c'mon, look at the emoticons this website uses.

The base world of WFB was developed using LOTR as the template (Not just the basic races.. but the actual fluff). It's pretty generic so yeah there is no surprise people don't care much about its world when it comes to marketing or merchandise.

People forget Warhammer 40k: Space Marine which was a fun distraction and there are online elements, I just played it online today actually. I love that game, it's a great 3rd person shooter.

I mean the setting of 40k definitely is it's own but there are tons of futuristic shooters and war games out there. You have the rip off that is Starcraft, Titanfall just came out, you have Destiny coming out soon. 40k certainly has a different tone and a unique look and feel but I never thought it was so unique that the games are that successful.

I know there hasn't really been a WFB-based game since the 90's, when there were a pair that came out at the time of Final Liberation.

There was a press release in December of 2012 that announced Sega had acquired a WFB license from GW, and then last summer this popped up. http://www.creative-assembly.com/job/130905/associate-producer-warhammer

I don't think much has been revealed about the actual game though.

Shadow of the Horned Rat was a fantastic game. Of course, I'm a Skaven at heart, so I'm biased. It was good though. The troop movement was really good. It stayed true to the tabletop game while taking advantage of the more fluid movement available in a computer game.

It was a Fantasy version of the old Total War games.

I've been playing through the Dawn of War games again lately, I hope Relic makes more of them. Ample room for 40k games... RTS, TBS, RPG, FPS, even MMO if done right. WHFB... the best I've played was a mod for Medieval 2: Total War which was pretty good. Call of Warhammer iirc?

I had Shadow Of The Horned Rat on my old PS1. It was pretty great actually. I never got round to playing Mark Of Chaos though.

A multiplayer FPS using Mordhiem as its base would be amazing though...

I don't think you know how EA works. The game will be completely free, and you get to play a scout with a combat knife. Chainsword available for $5, bolter for $10, melta, lascannon or plasma guns, power armor for $15 each. If you buy the Space Hulk DLC for $39.99, you get tactical dreadnought armor and an assault cannon.

Don't let EA anywhere near IP you enjoy, ever.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I'll agree with this one. So nineties was a little harsh, but what they did to Rome with every iteration after, I cannot condone.

Agreed. They managed to make the entire game so much more complicated, without actually making it more advanced. I thought I was in a minority of 1 in disliking everything post R:TW
