Same for me. I spent my first gaming years imagining up the perfect Valhallan army with the theme of the Red Army at its most desperate time. When the time came where I could afford them I had discovered Praetorians and was hooked. One day I may go back and give them a try but im currently well settled with my current army.
You could toss in a unit or two of Valhallans as your veterans. Presumably once veteran survivors are reduced to squad size they get fielded in whatever full size IG/AM company needs them. This would let you vary the modeling and painting without the cost of a full army.

Wow, that's really going all out! It does sound cool.

Awesome sauce. I plan to build a huge fluffy IG army after I finish up my blood angels (missing 2 land raiders a pod, some sang priests and that's all I "need).

Will be a multiple world regiment detachment fully fluffy
Vendattes with elysian troopers, chimeras with cadian veterans (karskin models. Omg karskin are sexy models)

Firing line of platoon inf. Either vostrayn, moradian, or valhallan.

Some veterans or guardsmen squads kitted out for CC with catachan models. (One of my favs)

And some tanks from a world I am as yet undecided on.

Ofc all will be colored differently to show there pride plus hopefully having the different models.

Oh yea, some first and only snipers in place of ratlings.

Ohhhhh I can't wait.
A thought I had for my hypothetical Praetorian Guard regiment was to vary it by using different British Army units. The bulk would be Praetorian Guard of course, but the Stormtroopers would be WWII "Red Devils" paratroopers, and the armor would be WWII 8th Army "Desert Rats". I'd have liked to used Ratlings in the Napoleonic uniform of the 95th Rifles, but my conversion skills were not (and still aren't) up to that.

Last time I tried mixing regiments in a fluffy way I ended up with this

My photography was awful back then... sorry

There are like (off the top of my head) over 20 different regiments and almost 500 men there. Was horrible. Never entertaining the idea of adding in any more guard than I have after I had to sell all those. I have never seen a collection like mine before with so many conversions and rare models etc. Pity I had to sell them but it was for the best.

I am a recovered model addict and I am proud to say I now have a 100% painted, properly themed and well sized army!

So you'd advise against mixing as the uniforms/paint schemes clash?

Yes mainly, and also its hard to stop. If you like guard models then every time you see a cool unit you start feeling tempted to add it to the collection. Its a path that has few good ends. I advise sticking to a theme personally. Or having 2 small armies and combining them.

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep it in mind should I start IG/AM. At the moment, I really should focus on getting all of my Necrons assembled, never mind fully painted.

As I've said before, it's the Mordians. No other regiment brings such class, such a smart look to 40K's battlefields. They are, quite simply, the most fabulous regiment of them all.

They're also still very hardcore and disciplined soldiers besides that, which is also cool.

My theme is multi world theme :p
Note, all my armor will be same color. Fliers same color. Armor is tallaran desert raiders, artillery probably too. Or just the cadian green for art.

Personally I hate the meshed IG army feel.

Savlar Chem-Dogs. No models, no listing in this poll, and no love, but they don't care. Just give them a gun, get them off their toxic dump of a world, and let them steal anything that isn't nailed down and they're happy!

Actually, Kriegers are based more on WW1 German soldiers.

Catachan hands down the most adaptive crew of anyone, and democratic no-nonsense feth-the-authoratah to boot.
Makes for pretty easy fluff too..
Models aren't the best but that's why you customise, takes a lot longer than just slapping some paint on ready to go forgeworld but hey.
Also I personally still know a few boys from Vietnam the stories and their photos will stick with me forever..

With their trench coats and helmets they dont really look anything like WW1 Germans. If anything they look more like typical cliche evil Nazis you see on TV. Which unfortunately is very popular among many wargamers I have noticed. Hence why they are at the top.

I see their helmet is kind of Frenchy maybe... But over all, the general theme is leathery cape nazi ish looking evil dudes.

To me anyways. Google ww1 german soldier and compare it to a krieg model. Doesnt even look similar.

For me it is a little hard to choose as I like a bunch of them a lot. My vote is for either DKoK or Catachan. I like the look of the first a lot and the idea of an army of rambos is also fun for me.

Praetorians are by far my favorite.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

Elysian Drop Troops, in regards to their "Elite" status amongst other IG Regiments, the Elysians are a Volunteer based military and before they can even join the IG they have to do a Tour of Duty with the PDF fighting against Pirates and Raiders. Also they look awesome, have cool unique vehicle variants and take on the riskiest missions. Real Men join the Imperial Guard, Real Soliders go Airborne!

BLUF: Elysians are a triple threat awesome unit, long post about Airborne vs Air Mobile.

I concur, they got my vote. This is just my opinion but Elysians are not just airborne, they can also be played more akin to Air Mobile or Air Assualt. I first entered the 40k universe by playing Battlefleet Gothic, and the best part was boarding party attacks. If you read the AM codex these guys also do ship to ship combat as well. So either Airborne (jump in with all the equipment and assets you need and resupply by airdrop and hold key objectives till relived by regular infantry) Air Mobile (squads of light infantry with organic dedicated aircraft to ferry them into or out of battle, along with thier equipment, self stustaining, but relient on close air support to defend light infantry from armor or entrenched enemy infantry.) or Boarding Party ( imagine SPACE HULK but with storm troopers instead of Terms) Elysians get my vote for being a triple threat. Sorry for the long post.
