Why would anyone...anyone...AAANYONE in their right mind leave their centurions with tl-heavy bolters?

The fact that you are paying a lot of points for this slow, non-overwatchable unit should tell you that you need them for one purpose only: Grav Cannons.

Because you cant get that much anti-heavy firepower anywhere else in the SM armory.

If GW had made the default option 2 Heavy Bolters for those points, then maybe they would be an option. TL-Lascannon is already pushing it, but a single tl-HB is just plain stupid.

Even IF/CF Centurions don't really profit from having HBs because they are TLed anyway

Depends on what you want them to do. Once you define the role you want them to play in your army, the load out should become obvious.

I chose them to replace a Devastator Squad. My load out:

Sgt- Grav Amp and Hurricane Bolters
2x TL Lascannons, Missile Launchers

Sgt has split fire and shoots at heavy infantry (Hurrican Bolters are just for more dice to throw and cheaper then ML).

The other two shoot at armor out to 48".

I could see a Sgt w/ TL Lascannon and ML, with the other two being Gravcannon+Amps w/ Hurricane Bolters though. Why the Hurricane Bolters and not a ML? Numbers! ML Frag can deviate, and has pretty crappy S and AP vs. MEQ, or one krack missile... but you have the Gravcannons so why pay the extra points for a not-quite guaranteed extra dead MEQ? Hurricane Bolters just throws more shots at them and can be pretty useful against hordes.

I'm still on the fence though about which is better- a full up Devastator squad with 4 Lascannons or 4 ML's, or three Cents. Or a Thunderfire Cannon. Or heck, even a Land Raider. Stupid Heavy Support!

Both Grav Cents and LC/ML Cents have their place and you are right, it depends on their function that is why is my planned Imperial Fist army, I am having two squads of each. Grav Cents shred MEQ like nobody else, probably one of the best ways to take out Terminators too but one can't deny the power of Cents outfitted with LC/ML especially with the Imperial Fist Chapter Tactics, you have the punch of a regular Devastator Squad but more effective with TL LC, with the Tank Hunter special ability, Imperial Fist Dev Cents are a force to contend with.

With Bolter Drills, your other forces should be able to take out infantry pretty well. A lot of people say bolters suck but just ten tac squad in a drop pod in my GK army have earned their points and then some because of Bolter Drills so many more hits. The Grav weapons are still better don't get me wrong but to me the Imperial Fists have Chapter Tactics to fill in those holes a bit. Thunderfire Cannons are pretty awesome as well, especially since they come with a Techmarine and are only 100 points. Bolster defenses and let the barrages fly.

While I agree with the heavy bolter comments, I think you are underestimating the power of the TL LC on Centurions especially Imperial Fist Centurions, their Chapter Tactics make them more than worth it especially when you couple those with the ML. Otherwise the Hurricane Bolters work in place of the Heavy Bolters.

So do you think it's worth magnetizing them all or just buying 2 kits and doing one with LC and other with grav?

Has anyone done the math how much more effective the lascannons (even with tank hunter) actually are than the Grav cannons? Because the grav weapons with the amp are pretty decent antitank too. Granted, las has the range advantage, but overall, I suspect they made grav too strong, making the other weapon options pretty pointless.

magnetizing it is

As a fellow Fists player (SoT for me), I am having the same issue making the decision putting together a Centurion Unit, so I am magnetizing as well. I'm not sure why there would be four models in the unit, but I am using the three that come in the box. Based on the chapter tactics of Fists and SoT, the only weapons that get chapter tactics bonuses are the Las Cannons (Tank Hunters), and Missle Launcher (Tank Hunters). None of the bolter weapons (heavy; hurricane) benefit from the Bolter Drill or Close Range Bolter Drill as they are already twin-linked, and the Siege Drills and TL Meltaguns don't get Tank Hunters, as that chapter tactic only applies to Devastator Centurionas, not Assault Centurions. The decision is then, do you want close range (Grav/Hurricane) or long range (Las/Missle). Since I have one Land Raider Crusader, I will either run them with Grav/Hurricane in the LR, or stick Lysander/Assault Terms in the LR, and run the Centurions in the backfield with Las/Missle.

Lascannons or Missile Launchers for the reasons this guy said.

Magnetizing is a great option for versatility and if you are still indecisive. My problem is that I suck at it and screwed up when I tried so I went with the LC/ML combo. I am going to buy a second kit eventually to make Grav Cents but that is because I am also going to run both in my Imperial Fist army and I just like Centurions.

I see. I don't have any issues magnetizing. I guess I'll just take the time to magnetize all the weapons, besides the Heavy Bolters as it seems pretty agreed apon that there dreadful for cents?

Yes.

A hurricane bolter at anything greater than 12" away is just the equivalent of 3 TL-Bolters, i.e. at BS4 that would be the equivalent of 4 bolters.

A ML on the other hand can deliver a krak shot or small blast, both of which perform better than those 4 bolters at anything other than <12" range

And for those points they are a steal - especially when used in combo with the sarge's omniscope to target 2 different tanks when your grav cannons are out of range.

4 bolters beats a frag missle any day of the week man........

hurricane bolters are way better combo'd to the grav cannons.

10 points for a krak missle doesnt seem bad (and it isnt on imperial fists cents) but your adding that 10 to an already expensive unit.

The only time you should take the missles is in combination with the TLLC since they work at the same range and targets.
