As a big TMNT fan, I will see the film. The trailer did not look terrible and these reviews are encouraging.

Yeah... as long as the "spirit" of the TMNT is intact. I can deal with it being "Bayified".

Count me excited.

I was very against the new movie since I heard about it, but...these reviews are making me a little more interested. I'll keep an ear out on more reviews.

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"

As for the 'spirit', The 'origin' of the ooze has taken on a lot of different paths over the multiple series. The WHO made it, the WHY it exists and HOW the turtles got exposed have changed multiple times, and the truth of the matter has been 'It doesn't really matter, as long as the turtles exist'. I actually liked this story arc which made some sense.

Spoiler:

The 'mutagen' is a serum which was being designed to facilitate extensive healing from damage and disease for humans. As always you have animal test subjects. You eventually find out WHY the serum for healing was being created, and it was to combat a man-made disaster used to oppress and control the population. In an attempt to STOP the man-made disaster, the scientist working on the 'mutagen' destroys all of the samples and test subjects. Lab burns, scientist dies, it is all lost to the ages.

What you find out is 'the shredder' is a man from Japan who planned to follow in his clan's ancient path of poisoning the water in order to gain control over the population. They plan to let loose a harmful chemical in new york and then have Sachs, one of the scientists working on the mutagen come up with a 'cure' for profit and power. When the mutagen is destroyed, the plan was ended and the Foot clan and shredder have basically been committing crimes to try to get materials to attempt to re-create the work from scratch.

What you find out is the good scientist who was killed when he found out why they needed the mutagen was April Oniel's father. And as a kid, she would hang out in the lab a bunch. When the fire happened and her father died, unbeknownst to anyone, she grabbed a few of the test subjects before the left the building so they wouldn't die. A rat and 4 turtles.

So basically once the shredder and crew find out the turtles are the same test subjects due to April's crack reporting and snooping about, they realize the mutagen can be extracted from their blood and hi-jinks ensue. Go ninja go ninja go. Shredder loses, Turtles win, Shredder gets exposed to some mutagen, Turtles and April are life-long friends, Cue sequel.

Beats a truck hitting a speed bump and dropping toxic waste down a sewer. That was the sad thing about TMNT II secret of the ooze... the Secret was 'Whoops, mah bad. also ninjas'

Apes was terrific, but for me Hercules was - easily - the worst movie I've seen this year in the theater. I would never have seen it if I had known beforehand it was a Brett Ratner movie, but I did, and it was awful.

Anyway, TMNT was not well received on Pajiba, either.

While that one is not actually in there, a lot of really good classic lines and scenes are.

Spoiler:
Cowabunga and 'Tonight I done on turtle soup' were both there and had people cracking up. There were a few other classic scenes as well as straight shot-for-shot scenes from the original cartoon's intro and comic series.

Everyone who is a turtles fan should frame this movie via the eyes of the first 3, this is the best review of the previous 3 movies and what made them good/bad:

Nope, they got Pentatonix to do a song named "We Are Ninjas":

Disclaimer: I have no idea if the song is actually in the movie.

That is how it happen in issue 1, it was a parody of the Daredevil origin.

If by parody you mean it IS the Daredevil origin, then yes.

The TMNT creators actually said it's meant to be the exact same scene from a different angle.

I had the interesting experience of taking my cousins to the movie. They're both around ten and are visiting from England, so they know very little about them. One of the comments they made was that shredder was a little too over-the-top, a sentiment that I agree with. All those knives were completely unnecessary.

Shredder is not an american... He is as authentic Japanese ninja master as one can get.

And the turtles are not aliens.

The 'American' is more of a 'Baxter Stockman' role.

Spoiler:

And I didn't mind the new 'suit'. The suit would have been useless in the hands of someone who was not a martial arts master. It was designed to enhance his skills, not make anyone into a roboninja.

And if you think about it, the turtles were easily stronger than an average human. All the suit did was enhance the strength. In the hands of a nobody, without the techniques, the suit is useless.

The blade thing worked IMHO... In a world of guns... what use is a ninja/samurai? The blades were designed to be what he needed. They were a bo staff, a katana sword, a fist blade, a sai, a throwing knife, whatever they needed to be when a ninja master needed them to be it. I was able to suspend disbelief to accept the shoehorning of the need for 'shredder being spikey' into 'modern day ninja warrior'.

And splinter still beat his damn ass in a fair fight, and did so without making him fall into a garbage truck and being crushed to death.

Ah, the character he was playing was actually a japanese person, from japan. The Shredder was actually japanese in this movie. In fact, almost all of his lines are subtitled.

He is so wrong if he starts off saying it is the worst version of the franchise produced and claims Turtles 3, The Anime and the live action power rangers show are 'better'. That is intellectual dishonesty and hyperbole to claim that. There is nothing in this movie worse than live action venus. He loses all credibility other than a snarling unpleasable comic book guy after that comment.

I can't disagree more with everything he says. The only Legitimate point he has is the similarities to spider man's plot. But 'magic blood' and ooze is just what it is... Macguffins are Macguffins, even in the source material.

I thought the suit was amazing, I just didn't like the abundance of blades. Shredder didn't even use them very often in the fight scenes. He just punched and kicked most of the time.
