Because it's stupid. It promotes this super speshul snowflake attitude tumbler has. As far as social attitudes go it easily ranks in the top worst with religion and other extremist ideologies.
Just the dating/farming sim part makes me feel like this:

Right, because only straight white men deserve to have games designed for them. I can't really think of a single game that would be made worse by more customization, so it really doesn't bother me that it's a core aspect of the game.

Man I do not see the appeal of these kinds of games at all. I guess I'm not in the target demo - for me, the best part of The Sims was like, making a small room, putting a grill in it with a sim who couldn't cook, and watching them burn theselves to death. Stuff like that.
Best of luck with it, anyway. Kind of surprised this is a whole genre.

It's about the same appeal you might find in most games only more subdue. Puzzle, progression, story, spectacle. It's just about farming rather then alien head shots.

I don't get the first comment. Years ago, yeah sure. Maybe it's cause I don't play many mainstream games anymore, but anything I've spent time playing recently either allows for a male or female character, or your avatar in the game is something so abstract that it is without gender, like a ship, or an abstract cluster of pixels, or whatever. Payday 2 is about the only exception I can think of. Even some mainstream games recently have had female lead characters. Remember Me comes to mind. Granted, the game sucked, but it wasn't because of that.
I was going to go into a long and well thought out explanation of why I feel like it's just otherwise pandering a bolted on gimmick to a wide demographic. Then I realized: it really doesn't matter. I'll probably never hear of this game again, and I'll certainly never have to play it. It doesn't affect me. I guess if anyone enjoys it, hope you have a blast. I'm off to stick my head in elsewhere.

Sigh, I think ridiculing people who may not fit into "more old fashioned" ideas of gender and sex as quite rude.

Customisation does not always equal being able to romance anything in a skirt... or trousers... or... erm... whatever else some people might be in to. I am all in for being able to change what your character looks like and even how you play through the game (which while not customisation is down to player choice); I just like games to have a least a little realism in terms of how characters relate to one another. Outside of a very specific community you are unlikely to run into a farmer who is going to be interested in a one armed, 3ft high, genetically male, female identifying person, who dresses up as Elvis and is sexually interested in cars. Or who would not be extremely confused by this person appearing in town one day...

Why can't you already represent those people with normal male/female selection?
dude who wants to a be chic. pick female.
indentity issues can roll dice, on 4+ they are female.
intersexed can be any combo of above.

Well, yeah, that is just “not implementing randoms limits on who your character can romance and letting you decide”.
SilverMK2 wrote:I just like games to have a least a little realism [in terms of how characters relate to one another].

Realism in game? What the hell for?
Honestly, cannot bring myself to care about this game, but if this ideologically sound (representing more diversity) stuff allows the dev' to actually have less work to do (because no need to care about implementing random limitations), it is all the better for them. I will just stick to Long Live The Queen, where it is damn easier for crown princess Elodie to get the “You have been sent flowers by a woman” achievement than the “You have romanced a commoner.” one . Some barriers are just harder to cross than others, I guess.

Orcs and elves don't really exist outside of very specific communities, but I guess that is why we call these games fantasy. You know the fantasy that you could visit a place that isn't the world we live in. Some people like their fantasy places to be freed of race and gender persecution. Some people like their fantasy places to be full of elves and orcs. Personally I like having both.

Again, customisation and the kind of interactions that may occur as a result of those customisations need to be considered carefully.
I appreciate that one can make a fantasy world almost anything you wish, however there comes a point where what you create takes a serious stretch of the imagination.
Mythical creatures hail back to the dawn of humanity. Tales of utopian societies where everyone lives together happily have been standard fare for almost as long. Worlds where you can rock up to anyone/anything and befriend and/or romance them regardless of their or your looks, personality, gender and sexual preferences exist pretty much only in bad porn fiction.
Again, it will be interesting to see how they build this kind of player freedom into the game.

I guess my imagination is just superior to yours then, as I really have no problems with this kind of customization. (edit: since my post wasn't as obvious a jest as I intended...) Everyone's individual needs for "realism" reflects their own biases.

Sometimes a person's mind can be so open all their brains fall out
And indeed they do. I would love a game with more scope for alternative lifestyle choices to be taken into account; I just realise that one cannot just bolt it on to any old game and call it a win for the non-straight, non-white, non-male gamer.

I disagree. Certainly it has already been done by lazy programmers unwilling to spend time to quote intricate and complex rules for their game dictating which other players your character can romance depending on your character's look, personality, gender and sexual preference. Actually, the character creation phases that require you to nominate your character's personality and sexual preference are pretty rare.

Wow I caused more of a debate then I was expecting...I wanna say some things here:
1) dont just read what I said, as I am usually an idiot with a poor grasp of the wonderfully complicated english language, read the description of the game in the link.
2) Also, I personally think as a whole the majority of games with a romance element do restrict your choices in both your customization and who you romance, with in my experience few if any homo/bisexual romance options, so I like the freedom this game would give if it gets enough backing
also:

2) When did tumblr come into this?

I do hope that was a joke, but if not then well...I think comparing people with gender identity issues to mythical creatures is not classy in the slightest

Dude it seems you are comparing gender issues to the people who claim to be "kin"...wow, classy. And I dont know about the farming elements of the game as I am not building the game but perhaps if you helped them raise some cash they might be able to show clearly what they plan for the game to be like. As its a MMO I would imagine you would get a set space for your farm, but you only start off with a small section of it, then you can buy more space up to the limit, and then if the game gets enough sales there would be updates to increase the max size. This is speculation on what seems to be the norm for mmos involving building things and places in my experience. (Havent played a farming mmo before, but it would probably follow the same tried and tested premise in my opinion)

To the people wondering about the game for its playable elements not just the romance elements (heretics!) there is a Pre-Alpha demo video, screenshots about it, and info of the game as well as a talk from the developers about the game, I hope that clears up some questions about the game...apparently you can go fishing! (there are jobs to pass time while your carrots grow or while you refuel your tractor to run over more pedestrians)
