I know it is obviously to serve the plot, but taking the plot armour/paper-armour/regeneration-armour out of it. Why does Vulkan happen to die so much compared to other Primarch's who well, have one shot. Does he die because he sucks big time, or does he die because he knows he can come back so is just reckless with it.

That part doesn't make sense because other Primarchs can absorb massive amounts of damage and survive relatively unscathed, but Vulkan who's meant to be one of the strongest has his head turned to vapor by a Human with pistols.

Plus if his head comes off, does he grow a new one or does his head magically slide across the floor to come back to his body and re-attach itself?

Because if he grows a new one, it'd be like "oh ... there's my head ... huh?"

A better question would be "what is considered to be "Vulkan" if his head is chopped off?" Would his body grow a new head? Or would his head grow a new body?

He's "dead" until GW/Trazyn need him again.

If he died, He would lose collector value and Trazyn would need to get a new one.

He's alive.

As much as it is easy to assume it is down to his treatment by Kurze, I actually think he loses his grip as a side-effect of his repeated regeneration. It is mentioned that he regenerates faster and faster after each death, and I think he comes back increasingly flawed each time.

When John takes him down with the lightning, I think what happens is he has his reset button hit, hence his regeneration takes, or will take, a much longer time than it has previously. His heart has already begun beating again by the end of UE, so he'll be back soon, although I don't think he had any further influence on the core HH story after Istvaan, so only if this whole Ultramar tangent continues.

We have to see him pop out of that casket before the HH books are done.

The problem is that thus far, Vulkan has NOT been written as a guy who would have had the foresight necessary to leave 9 artifacts strewn across the galaxy, nor would he have had reason to write the Book of Fire in the first place. Quite frankly, there has been zero indication that Vulkan is the prophetic type at all... so the writing for his character needs to go through some pretty drastic changes.

If they leave him in the casket then GW has to completely retcon salamander history, and I don't think that would make too many people happy.

Vulkan wakes up, sanity restored and gains fantastic prophetic insights into the maddened ravings of himself? Writes them down as a prophecy and says "find the 9, find me."
