Super-basic question about movement. OGaM is essentially SoBaH, right? In Songs, models "leapfrog" the stick, essentially moving Short/Medium/Long plus the size of their base. In OGaM, the diagrams seem to indicate that units/models move in the traditional way, i.e. the leading base edge can't go farther than the stick is long. Is that right?

That is correct. No more big bases shenanigans. Same spot travels the same distance.

That's nice to here. I've been teaching my 5 year old son to play Songs, but we've been using minis based for a variety of systems, which has led to some minor but difficult-to-explain issues.
Also, I picked up (but have yet to read through) a copy of Ronin from the same Osprey line of rules. Maybe this will get me to work on the Zenit minis I got from their Indiegogo campaign last year...

If you're looking for an asian combat game with a bit more fantasic elements in it (ronin is very historical, yes?) have you checked out "Fistful of Kung Fu"? It's also by Osprey, but shares a writer and and basic mechanics with Song of Blades and Heroes. It also has the reaction system (with a few tweaks) from Of Gods and Mortals. On the cover it looks like a modern asian-sci-fantasy game, but it's specifically written for asian pulp cinema of various eras.
I picked it up a week ago and also haven't had a chance to play it, but it looks fantastic. Has some interesting rules for using items on the battlefield in combat, being able to throw your opponent, and for setting up scenarios.

I actually like the more historical feel of Ronin. There have been a lot of fan-made WHFB samurai lists, and to a one they go far in the fantastic direction for my tastes. That said, I like the look of all the Osprey rules sets I've skimmed so far, so I may well pick it up in the near future, so thanks for the recommendation.

OGAM is perfect for the Zenit miniatures. It's almost as if they had this game in mind when designing the minis.

Did you go in for the Fantasy creatures? I just bought more troops for my to-be-completed-someday Samurai army.

Personally, I'm going for 1 or two, but most of mine came for L5R to begin with, so an Oni or Dragon from the same line makes sense, to me.

I didn't go for any, at all. They were great looking minis, but I was nearing my crowdfunding glut at that point, and Indiegogo was too arcane for my taste. I bought a few from a vendor the other province over, very happy with it. Can't wait to get their Kirin, Tengu and Byakko. And I right that the four-armed celestials are essentially what Japanese Buddhism refers to as Ten-Nin, or Ten-Jin?
