Also, the flyrant is elevated so he is NOT the closest model (use the hypotenuse to measure distance).

I have seen this a few times in this thread. You do know that the flyrant never moves in the Z direction when you Swoop/Glide?

You don't suspend him 10" above the board, don't put him on a flight stand, etc

He stays exactly at the height that the model has always been and you measure things accordingly. If he is Swooping behind a Bastion, if the model is fully behind the Bastion you cannot see him, he is not "in the air" above.

Tough Tyrant Guard

SHE-FI-ELD

Was there ever anything on Preferred Enemy? Can't remember if that was ever FAQ'd. Either way play it however you play those sort of rules when the target unit is mixed. there is more than just swooping HT with Guard and Preferred enemy for sure.

So if you don't get PE for Mixed you don't get H2H for mixed etc etc, or if you play original unit (before joining) as-a-rule.

[Edit]
Apparently not, last PE thread I could find

Short indeed.

Indded, flyers are not FMC, so disregard the previous for RAW purposes, if not RAI.

More importantly, the unit is NOT hard to hit which defeates much of the expected purpose of the tactic.
INDEPENDENT CHARACTER
...
While an Independent Character is part of a unit, he counts as part of the unit for all rules purposes
...
Special Rules
When an Independent Character joins a unit, it might have different special rules from those of the unit. Unless specified in the rule itself (as in the Stubborn special rule), the unit’s special rules are not conferred upon the Independent Character, and the Independent Character’s special rules are not conferred upon the unit. Special rules that are conferred to the unit only apply for as long as the Independent Character is with them.

So the hard to hit is not conveyed to the unit. You are shooting the unit and the unit is not hard to hit, even if one model has it.
We then follow normal rules for:
Your hits apply to the non swooping unit, you use majority toughness to wound and then apply look out sir/armour/etc save as normal.

but hive tyrants aren't independent characters.

EDIT: however I agree that is the way to play it.

You are correct that Hive Tyrants aren't independent characters. However HT's may join Tyrant Guard exactly as if it were an IC. so they use the rules posted.

"A single Hive Tyrant (or the Swarmlord) may join a unit of Tyrant Guard exactly as if it were an Independent Character." (Tyranid Codex, Tyrant Guard section Shieldwall rule).
