I saw the video earlier but I wouldn't exactly put GW down as trolling.

Except for the water pot thing. Not because of the price, actually. But instead:

It's a 'water pot' that is shaped like a mug. I mean, seriously. There is a tiny, potentially stomach-pumping, flaw with this idea.

Trolling is the only rational explanation.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

It's 'trolling' if by that you mean that GW have contempt for the intelligence of their customer base. Actually, I shouldn't say 'GW' as one entity; by that I mean the upper/executive level and sales department that dictates some of the more dubious policy decisions. I don't think for a moment the artistic/design or shop level staff think in those terms.

I heard some pretty horrendous stuff as a staffer and that was more than 10 years ago now, the word 'sheep' from at least a couple of people that would have no reason to lie about such things (and you can guess the context in which it is used).

Although, I don't think this is unusual in business by any means (one only has to think of Gerald Ratner's speech about his company's jewellery, here is a good list that illustrates: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1573380/Doing-a-Ratner-and-other-famous-gaffes.html ), but the amount in which it is visible to the consumer certainly does differ. If you look at the level of self-importance, the prices, the legal policies and targetting of fan sites, the constant vacuous updates (with added DLC) then I think it's fair to say that there must be a certain low estimation of at least the repeat customers of their products.

But as said this isn't by any means unique to GW, and seems to happen to most companies (to a lesser or greater extent) once they reach a certain size. If it bothers you, or you're conscientious at all, you're probably better off sticking clear of blogs and forums and reaching about it..

About how you can claim that GW is making bad models on purpose for irrational reasons (e.g. trolling), while simultaneously admitting that the said models are "bad" only in your subjective opinion?

If you want to argue that GW is doing models badly on purpose, you need to prove they are bad beyond subjective opinions.

If you cannot show they are bad except for varying tastes, you cannot argue that they were purposefully created "bad".

This is a VERY good point.

For anyone to seriously think GW was 'trolling' the community, you'd have to show some intent.

You personally liking a model isn't showing that.

So, unless you've got some ace up your sleeve, we are drifting really close to thread lock territory.

Honestly Alph, we have a youtube blogger, with a link to his YouTube blog in his sig, who regularly creates threads where he posts his YouTube videos, posting a potentially inflammatory YouTube video that appears to have little or no substance beyond incitement.

I think we passed that particular territory a while back!

So he made an opinion peace (see what i did there ) on what he thinks are design fails of GW, So lot of people openly tell their dislike for certain models but because it is in a video it is a No, No?

I do agree though that GW believe so much in their own hype, that they really think that whatever GW releases is in the same ballpark as the works by Michelangelo. Because our hobby is to buy what GW makes!

I think it shows gw is quite aware that drinking from your water pot and cleaning your brush in tea is a right of passage for most painters

I'm assuming they found it cheaper to buy pre-printing mugs than getting plastic water pots made up. I would have bought one to use as a mug if the design wasn't so awful.

To be honest I'm stunned anyone uses an actual water pot - I've always used old jars. The only time I've seen real water pots was in pre-school craft sets to minimize spillage.

I use disposable plastic cups, because I hate washing cups. I do however, drop it into an old chipped mug so I don't knock it over so easily.

Even people who openly disparage GW can like their products. There's a difference between thinking the management are retards and thinking the game or universe is bad. Some of 40ks biggest fans on here are considered trolls for daring to voice their negative opinion of GWs faults, regardless of any praise they also sing.

The OP made an opinion peice and others voiced their disagreement, which happens if it's text or a video, if he's a white knight or a dissenter.

No... people are going to comment regardless of whether you write it in text or make a video. It's just when you make a video AND start a thread specifically for the video you're obviously going to attract more comments.

I would have picked maulerfiend, but close enough.

So let's not talk about the video because giving a critique is hard and it's much easier just to throw opinions around?

I'm assuming the actual problem with some of these designs is perhaps the switch to digital modelling and perhaps the studio getting used to that. I mean certainly we've had a lot more beautiful releases from GW recently than we've had poor. I also think that quite a lot of the time, for the larger kits, the way GW paint them does not help in selling them. Certainly as soon as these kits hit the forums you see people working conversion and painting wonders on them.

Unless you can prove that GW is intentionally making poor kits rather than them failing to understand their customer base then I'm not really sure what the point is?

The Chaos releases are the most puzzling to me as they didn't fit with the existing aesthetic. Certainly if the DV chosen had become the standard aesthetic, in the form of a new CSM kit, then I think there would be less of a problem. Currently the Chaos Space Marine range is the most confused in my opinion. Too many differing interpretations for it to gel coherently. You've got the hard imperial vehicles clashing with the smoother Daemon Engines. Even the new Daemon engines clash quite substantially with the Defiler/Soul Grinder.

That's not the problem, it reflects their fluff as being Chaos SPACE MARINES. I'm still confused as to why they have no land speeders or why their fliers aren't actual fliers. I mean the Heldrake looks cool and all, it fits the aesthetic, but it doesn't look like a daemon engine to me, unless of course you count possessed rhinos... It should have had more flesh, like the maulerfiend, except the maulerfiend for some reason has a cartoony dinosaur face, with the silhouette of an armored war beast, not a daemon engine. The artists even needed to add fire shooting out of their mouths and eyes in the codex because they just don't look demonic. There's some what looks like skin over some pistons in a small part of its body. Cool. Do that with the rest of the model please. And give it a head that doesn't have large cartoon teeth that I was drawing in pictures when I was 5. Which reminds me...

for comparison

The funniest part is how they were just going to cut teeth out until they ran out of room in the middle, and rather than edit the model they just plowed ahead and carved a hole out in the teeth and put a tongue in to go through. To this day I can not get over that.

£10 for a brew mug in a tin box is not that outlandish:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=mug+christmas+presaent&oq=mug+christmas+presaent&aqs=chrome..69i57j0.5493j0j4&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#tbm=shop&q=mug+christmas+present+presentation+box

if you want to use it to clean your brushes, go ahead.

edit:

Just found this:

Thats a mug tin and coaster for £12. So, yeah £10 would be about the market for a mug in tin.

Speaking of trolling the community:

Just got a newsletter mail from GW. Spend ONLY 150€ this christmas and your delivery will be done not in a boring brown cardboard box but in a fancy painted cardboard box. Holy cow, is that a deal or what?!

@spudkins:
Not to bash your video there, but objectively speaking, the helldrake isn't that bad a model. It looks cool enough, it's pretty detailed. It may not fit great into your army (I paint Alpha Legion. The least mutated, least demon-worshipping of all traitors with lots of sneaky stolen imperial tech. How the hell am I supposed to add this warp parrot into my army?), but on it's own it's a nice enough model.
Also don't agree with you on the nids. The shoulderpads are a bit over the top, but some may like the design and it's one of the few gribblies I can immediately identify and tell what it's general job on the table is. As for the Sporo...Myco...tentacled ballsack, well, you're complaining that these walking reproductive organs (makes spore mines - basically mini-mes) looks like a reproductive organ. Gee, shocker.

This seems like a less than productive stance to take.

You seem to appreciate views but have no real interest in discussion of the topic?

So this thread is just click-bait? Showing off your work in public with no interest in critique or reasonable discourse?

Surely you recognize that a good way to improve your craft is to take constructive criticism (not that everything here has been constructive, but there's certainly some effort being made in the thread) and recognize the flaws in your own arguments.

As noted by others, if it's just opinion and you have no interest in backing it up, it's not GW that's "trolling" anyone, it's simply an aesthetic you dislike.

Also, don't bother thanking me for a view, I haven't watched the video. I'm merely commenting on your responses in this thread.

Re the cup controversy, for many gamers I would suggest drinking painty water may be a healthier option that what ever 2L bottle of carbonated sugar they usually partake in.

Re the blogger, I appreciate your use of the word peace in every post in this thread it was a good red flag and helped me avoid wasting time on your blogs. Very useful, I wish more people we so open as to their nature.

Peace.
