I'll throw my lot in with Event Horizon, freaking loved it. Also, The Happiness Of The Katikuris, Audition (although I'd say that was more of a thriller), Let The Right One In (the original version please), The Ring (again, the original), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 2003 remake this time as I found the original to be hokey, badly written and acted) and Cockneys Vs Zombies (it is as brilliant as it sounds)
Loved the Thing (whichever one the 80's movie is, I can never remember director's names) the original Alien is a classic. I remember thinking Signs was well done.
Event Horizon was great up until the last 15 minutes or so. That ending completely screwed up what was up until that point a great movie.
The new Evil Dead was pretty good, although it got a little too gore heavy for my tastes.
28 days/weeks later are great movies too, really loved their approach to the zombie genre by making zombies that were genuinely terrifying.
Always wanted to see the newer Mist and Thing, but could never find them on Netflix.
One thing that annoys me is there really aren't many deep sea horror movies out there, at least that I can find. All I've been able to find was a Thing rip off from the 80's that had some familiar actors in it (one guy was one of the robbers from home alone) Other than that pretty much nothing. The deep sea is a pretty scary place to me and I'd love to see more movies with that as a theme.
Also, I'm surprised to see people saying the Village is good. That's the movie where red is taboo and the villagers wear orange right? I've never made it through that movie, always thought it was one of the dumbest movies I'd ever seen. And this is coming from a guy who watches Sci Fi channel regularly. Does it suddenly get good in the last half hour or something?

Many would argue that I've seen too many and that's why they don't scare me to much. But in all honesty. Sinister, the Exorcist, the Conjuring, etc follow a pretty linear storyline based usually on one or two concepts.
There are some tht I have recently enjoyed. A lot of people would say that "As Above, So Below" and "The Pyramid" were bad movies, but I loved them for the history behind them and also for the natural acting. It's just that Paranormal Activity and SAW have just become too overrated for my taste
What I wanted to ask dakkanauts, which horror movie, would you say has genuinely sent chills down your spine, or was so disturbing or sinister, that you were afraid to turn the lights out?
Thanks
Honestly....poltergeist 3.......that gak scared me as a child, and I still find it incredibly creepy.

II thought it was a terrible ending to a good film - if they had been under any threat, rather than safe for the moment maybe could have bought it but it just seemed against the character of the father - apparently the book is better

Yep. That was rough

Eh, the Village was decent. It was more the story than the actual scare. I have a hard time watching it because once the "twist" is revealed, the movie is ruined.

Poltergeist 1 messed up a generation of kids. What people forget is that movie was PG. So YES, there were little kids in the theaters for that one. The MPAA wanted to rate it an R, but Spielberg and company successfully lobbied for a PG. They came up with the PG-13 rating shortly thereafter.

Wow, i'd completely forgotten about that movie. That was a good one, it certainly scared me at the time.

I must admit I'm not a big fan of the genre, purely because I got fed up of horror films relying on jump scares and effects rather than building up genuine atmosphere. That's maybe why the older films stand out more.
The shining.
The original ring trilogy.
The exorcist.
But the conjuring was very good and 28 days later reinvented the zombie film to make it much more scary.
The Shining is indeed one of the very best horror films ever made. No one does "disturbing" quite like Kubrick.
And just so no one thinks that I'm trying to be a "horror hipster" with my talking up of Audition, I actually think that the American The Ring was superior to the Japanese Ringu. More polished with better acting.
Well, I once watched a horror movie that was very scary. The part that sticked out was an old woman's corpse that kept appearing in front of the main character (a girl). It ended with the main character being pulled underground by a sheer force. It was fiery. Anybody know what that movie was called? I can't remember the name...
INSANE army lists still available!!!! Now being written in 8th edition format! I have Index Imperium 1, Index Imperium 2, Index Xenos 2, Codex Orks Codex Tyranids, Codex Blood Angels and Codex Space Marines!
PM me for an INSANE (100K+ points) if you desire.

It was Rated R. People who brought children to a film labeled for adult consumption are to blame, not the studio.
I didn't say it was. WE were appalled someone would bring 5 year olds to an R rated horror movie.

Did it have a seance and start with an old lady giving the girl a curse?

Have a soft spot for the Hammer ones , special fondness for "The Witches" and "Blood on Satan's Claw".
Always enjoy Rob Zombies films of the genre, his love of the medium is obvious.
The Preacher/villain from the Poltergeist film -- " The Angel child" -- creeped me out a lot as a bairn.
Did develop quite an affection for the schlocky end of the genre -- Slugs, The Mangler, Basketcase series etc and had many an enjoyable college night laughing/wincing at them.
.. Honourable exception being Cannibal Holocaust which is just fething nasty and the 2nd grimmest film I've ever seen.
The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Oh god yes. The Wicker Man is one of the few horror movies with a truly great story and atmosphere. Have yet to see Cage's "remake" but one day I will, if nothing else for the fact that it will most likely be hilarious

And I didn't say you were to blame. I remember people complaining about Jurassic Park being to intense/violent, but it was rated R and sold as a suspense/horror movie yet people ignored the rating and trailers and just assumed that it was for kids because, ya know, dinosaurs = kids. The new one is watered down PG13 but I bet you still see kids there that are quite young. I think my favorite was some idiot brought a 3 year old to the first Mortal Kombat and at the beginning the camera zooms in on a guys face that turns into a skull and the kid flipped the feth out and the dad had to leave because he wouldn't stop crying and screaming, which of course doesn't change that a three year old shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
More suspenseful than horror, but just watched The Tall Man with Jessica Biel. Very good flick, pretty good story. If anyone has Netflix and a couple hours, I'd say its worth a watch
Insidious
The conjuring. Took my nephews to that movie be because I jokingly said I would take them, then the mom made me. So I'm at this horror movie with a 7 year old and 8.
there are a few I can't remember
My favorite is sinister
