I see, so the fact that they were doomed from beginning by the planet they were from. It's similar to the tragedy of Luther and the Fallen Angels in that he should have been the greatest man of the era but was instead destined to be a distant second merely by the fact that the Lion landed on Caliban (which makes him much more relatable than the Lion). The Lion basically doomed the planet by landing on it. Thanks for sharing!

Btw, somehow the original Night Lords from Terra, the ones born of parents thrown into the lightless underground prison pits somehow sound way more hardcore!

And the Angels of Darkness descended on pinions of fire and light... the great and terrible dark angels.
He was not the golden lord. The Emperor will carry us to the stars, but never beyond them. My dreams will be lies, if a golden lord does not rise.

I look to the stars now, with the old scrolls burning runes across my memory. And I see my own hands as I write these words. Erebus and Kor Phaeron speak the truth.

My hands. They, too, are golden.

Yea, I realise most fluff is from during the Heresy but most of the traitor legions change so drastically, it's hard for them to be considered the same legion.

After reading some more FW stuff I was starting to regret I didn't include HH stuff, since there's just way more fluff available. But yea, it does make you think. Thanks for sharing your list!

I'm to impatient to list them all but my top 5 are:

1. Thousand suns : Tried do hard to do the right thing, but magnus kept getting screwed over
2. Alpha legion: I find their fluff funny, like trayzin level of dickery, with less stealing
3. salamanders and space wolves: while I dislike the wolves thoughts on psykers (damn you Russ), I like how these two actually care for imperial citizens
4. Death guard: almost everything about them is cool. from giving 0 feths about dying to nurgle to awesome stealthy primarch. even though eh shouldn't be =/
5. Luna Wolves: Pre-fall they were pretty bad ass and cool.

and my bottom 3 are:

1. dark angels: (WORST) traitorous, team killing dicks who kill off fellow astartes to get people, only to loose them seconds later because of their inept edginess. and the fact that lion damned his planet by killing all of the giant warp creatures in the long run. and also murdered chaplains (even if it was for an "eh" reason)
2. Ultramarines: WARD! in all seriousness, probably could me closer to the middle if girlyman was less of a dick to other people
3. Word bearers: because almost everything that went bad, i.e. horus falling, seems to go back to these fanatical dicks.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Unremembered Empire actually paints the Ultramarines in a completely different light.

Aren't you mixing in 40k stuff? There's no chasing the Fallen before the Heresy. Anyway, thanks for sharing guys but don't forget what I wrote in my OP. Course you're free to do what you want but I'd prefer if you guys stick to it so we can keep the lists focused.

 EngulfedObject wrote:
Simply rank all the Legions (pre-Heresy, not counting the two unknown legions) according to your personal preference. You can explain your reasoning if you want to as long as you rank them all. Keep in mind that this is strictly 30k and pre-Heresy.

And yea, Guilliman is actually alright in Unremembered Empire. It's worth reading for the interaction between him and the Lion but I do think things go downhill fast once Curze joins in and starts flipping over Land Raiders. Altogether it's actually quite disjointed and almost DBZ-like at times. I don't really get why Descent of Angels has such a bad rep when you have novels like this in the series.

I also think I might have to downgrade the Emperor's Children in my list. I recently read Fulgrim and didn't like them at all. All the stuff I read before was from the Index Astartes and wikis. Oh well, they still look glorious.

Yea, I was super curious about some of the more frequent posters on this forum, I just had to see their lists

Glad other people find it interesting too. Thanks for sharing!

And poor Word Bearers, it seems like they were rather bland before the Heresy though what's mentioned in the FW series is really interesting. The rather boring granite color scheme doesn't really help either, though I love their look once they turn heretic (well at least what they look like in the FW series). Got to read The First Heretic soon! I hear it's the best in the series!

First Heretic and Aurelian are both belters, well worth the reading. ADB's handling of them really fleshes the legion out and makes it awesome!

They do get a bit comedy-chaos though in the Calth series of books, and I basically loathe Erebus - he's too close to the one-dimensional chaos boogie-man to be effective anymore

Yea, I actually really enjoy his writing except when he's writing from the DA's perspective. They were pretty one-dimensional in Macragge's Honour (well it was really short) and getting slaughtered most of the time but they were still kinda badass.

Btw which one should I read first? Aurelian or The First Heretic?

Read First Heretic, then Aurelian. Aurelian takes place during First Heretic, but it's better to know what's happening in a wider context

Lion decapitated one of his chaplains for trying to enforce the "no psykers" rule. both defying the emperor, even if the rule was dumb, AND killing an astartes for doing his job. and I know most of their stupid comes after the heresy, but even pre and during the heresy they were just plain dumb. Lion putting more effort to monitor guilliman and be pouty that he wasn't helping instead of actually helping terra himself.

Fair enough. I think the Lion was quite reasonable in Unremembred Empire though. He took some basic precautions and Guilliman admits he would have done the same. Both were unsure as to whose side the other was on. They're actually quite similar to one another in that they always think strategically. And I think they're stubborn and a bit extreme, not dumb. But fair enough.

And I think old fluff indicates he didn't make it to Terra because he was traveling with Russ and Russ wanted to pacify worlds on the way. Sanguinius was on Macragge as well so obviously the Lion wasn't the only one concerned.

Well, I rather like the World Eaters after Betrayer (I'm noticing a pattern of suddenly quite liking a legion after I've read ADB write them...), and I've always found tha DA rather boring. However, I don't massively dislike any of the legions, there isn't much of a gap between my number 1 and number 18 if you get what I mean, (I quite like the Salamanders lately, and they're 14 on my list, although I prefer the more African tribe feel to the whole fireeeee! Thing) and imagine once FW write the DA I'll end up liking them. To be honest thinking about it I probably dislike the Emperors Children the most, but I really like the way they look and their FW models (Kakophoni, Palatine Blades, Phoenix Guard) so that pushed them up a little bit.

Hmm, I tend to find the Ultramarines a lot more boring but still more interesting than some of the other legions, mainly because they're featured a lot more (like in Macragge's Honour, in which they look pretty awesome). But yea, I don't really dislike any of the legions either and yea, I like the Emperor's Children almost solely because of their look.

And yea, the DA don't have any FW stuff yet. They look so friggin badass in their depictions in HH:Visions though.

I really like the UM since KNF and UE. Mostly I think I really like Guilliman, but they could've been really boring and I think they're pretty cool. The Theoretical/Practical thing they do is a nice hint into their thought process, and I'm looking forward to seeing more info about the 500 worlds.

I imagine the FW models for the DA will be pretty awesome. I don't like their models in 40k really, the whole robed monk thing doesn't really do it for me, but if they go with the more knightly feel ill probably quite like em. Also with them being the first legion, I hope FW goes into the very early days of the Astartes, I'm hoping theres some big grisly secrets from the early part of the great crusade.

Ehh, the robed warrior monk thing does it for me , I hope that's the look they go with. It's more of a sinister crusader look rather than a pure "knight" look. Like this:

Spoiler:

ooohhh yeaaahhh

And I dunno, my problem with the Ultramarines is that Macragge and the 500 worlds always seemed too "clean" and perfect to me. I like that for the DA, life has always been an unceasing struggle for survival, first against the Great Beasts, and now against Chaos and themselves.
