A death world codex where the opponent battles against the local flora and fauna.

You'd be able to take packs of dangerous animals, big monsters and be able to deep strike carnivorous plants to represent the enemy being surprise attacked by the local vegetation!

I really like that

This might draw some jeers, but back in the 90s I was sorta intrigued (on a purely fictional level) by the alien abduction craze that was going around (similar to the current zombie craze with youngsters), and I've always thought an army of these with "abduction-type" rules would be cool.

This is probably less imaginative than some, but Space Skaven.

Thing is, they'd have to have mutated in some way to form natural armor elements like bony hides, horns, disease spreads, death spits, things like that. You figure rats get into pretty much everything, theres no reason to expect they wouldn't get spread around in space at some point. I'd want them to still be kind of feral/tribal though, not necessarily technologically advanced, but simply evolving to a point of monstrous mutated mayhem. Assuming their own bones and hides were tough enough, they'd actually use the remains of their own dead as weapons and armor, regularly eat commit cannibalism and have large packs.

I'd also include other evolving variants into their army, some that evolved glide-like wing spans reminicent of flying squirrels exceot a pit more batlike, possum styles with huge tails that could infiltrate in tree cover and drag up enemy scouts unaware, longer legged variants that the others could ride like steeds, multi limbed freaks with high numbers of attacks, maybe some sort of crazy huge ones that other rats could grab onto the sides of and use as a battle transport.

There are lots of ways they could mutate to give them weird natural advantages, but I'm guessing they'd have to be a primarily assault based army, with the only shooting being done by some sort of dedicated spitter troops. If they had anything that could hawk acid globs or disease clouds that in some way befuddled their enemies that could help. Having the larger ones use ultra loud deafening roars or throw up gobbets of stomach acid or streams of fast hardening viral coagulants could offer weird tactical situations. I'd probably want plenty of different animal and disease mutation to change up how different units played, maybe have crossbreeds so they took on various naturally selected strengths from other creatures like horns, antlers, tough hides, membranous skin, enormous claws, possibly scales or chitin, though that might be a little to insect or reptile for them.

I imagine they'd attack in swarms, some hurling their own babies into the melee, a writhing tide of teeth and claws and disease. The hard part would be imagining up advantages for them so they didn't die outright to bolter fire and impenetrable marine ceramite, but I figure thats where all the mutation fluff would step in.

I'd do something as boring as normal humans. Except these guys have escaped all imperial influence and are actually allowed to innovate. So basically these guys would be a highly technologically advanced civilization, who intercepts any closing imperial fleet, in order to protect their home world from the grasp of the imperium, since they consider the Imperium a degenerate empire that represents the mere shadow of what the human race once were. This is because that this civilization is actually a remnant of the Dark Age of Technology (specifically, 21M), so after nearly 20.000 years of technological advancement, they feel nothing but contempt against the Imperium. The intel they've gathered from capturing the key personal from an imperial colonist ship (and later from interrogation of several prisoners of captured Imperial ships, which were all destroyed or disassembled), led them conclude that the human empire was undone and beyond redemption.

The civilization constantly struggles to stay under the Imperial radar, so any intercepted force must be dealt with, with extreme prejudice. This ensures that they are no survivors to report their location and send reinforcements.

What do they look like? Hell, I'm not sure. I always imagine them as a civilization that heavily use force fields and sopheticated stealth technology, so something akin to Crisis. I would like them to be similar to Demons, in the way that they have little to no saves, but have inv saves. Stealth and loads of blind/pinning weapons, but I'm not sure how to implement it in such a way, that you can base an army around it but not constantly have your opponent be BS1/WS1 or pinning 24/7.

Not sure what kind of race I'd do, but their mechanics on the table would be:

-ranged focus in general, few melee support. Very high offense that tapers off quickly.
-high focus on laser weaponry and reflecting enemy weaponry.
-focus on multiple units flanking and positioning, not gunlining.

Specifically, one of the mainstays of the army would be a certain laser blast weapon on several different possible platforms. It would be pretty sad for its point cost. However, models in many different units would be carrying an "amplifier mirror." You may target any amp mirror in your army with your own laser blasts once per shooting phase, automatically hitting, and then the mirror model immediately makes a shooting attack with better ROF, strength, and AP, as well as splitfire. He may also use shots on a 1 per 1 basis to target other models with amp mirrors that haven't been used this phase, increasing the stats of the beams even more, possibly making a highly devastating array of attacks at once on multiple units from multiple directions. The max range of a shot would only be something like 18", but a good chain of mirrors could take a shot across the board, turning it into several good shots at the same time.

This would have the side effect that the army does great damage when unhurt, but degrades exponentially as units are killed. They could also concentrate fire to nuke just about any single target.

On the armor side, they would tend towards 4+, and any armor save of 6 inflicts a wound from the enemy's weapon used for that save back on the unit that shot it. This has no effect if their armor is bypassed, but of course, some more elite units and HQ's would sport better armor or invulns, and still have the rule.

Oh I have so many ideas for this :-)

1) Space Jottun. No seriously: take some of the tech/magic ideas from the Thor movies, apply them to the idea of ice giants they present (have power armour variants and "savage" variants) give them all a form of magic and boom. Space Ice giants. It would be cool.

2) The now-removed Pariahs from the necrons? Turn them into their own army of necrom offshoots. To differentiate them make them a lot more "borglike" and have them have different units that are essentially necron versions of the different xenos species (Ork-pariahs, eldar-pariahs, Tyranid-pariahs, ect) ...also maybe some rules for adapting to opponents weapons and boom! Cool new Pariah offshoots!

3) Thunder Warriors from ancient terra. Idea is basically that a group of the emperors first space-marine type soldiers somehow got stranded in time in the warp, and has only now made it back. They could be a combination of "space barbarians" and space-marines, have a few pieces of super advanced tech, and generally serve as a few models + melee elite army!

And the winner:

4) A group of non-imperial humans, space marines, and Sisters of Battle who have been cut off from the rest of the imperium for a time since the age of Apostasy. They have since then been inundated and possibly corrupted by rouge machine spirits who have allowed technology to be "reborn" now that the machine cult does not control its use.

They are the true non-chaos human rebels. Humans who have survived and thrived no matter the odds stacked against them (They even make COMPROMISES with Xenos species!) The Imperium would hate them and defame them because of the hope they represent.

Oh man: I'm so jazzed about that idea that I've already TOTALLY started writing a fan-fic about it :-)

(shameless plug: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/The_Iron_Republic_%28Prologue_and_Part_1%29)

...And when it is completed I'm totally going to have a silly little fluff codex to go with it!

What can I say: 40k has tons of possibilities!

This is in no way adheres to fluff or cannon but something like -
The Lizardmen
Upon fleeing the end times of WHFB and ended up in the dimension of 40K. They appear before the war of the heavens and the Old Ones rejoice that their creation made it to this universe/dimension. The last Slaan dies from exhaustion when the meet the Old Ones, completing their task of saving their race. The Lizardmen are super pissed at the Old Ones for everything going to hell in WHFB and abandoning them.

The Old Ones hide the existence of the Lizardmen and do not subject them to the Impending War of the Heaven. The Lizardmen are given a star system to call their own and guided them along the path to becoming technologically advanced. The Old Ones also want to shield them from the warp and essentially augment them into anti-psykers.

However a select few insist in keeping the old ways intact (paying homage to the Slann) and see value in understanding the warp - the form a small coven of Old One priests. Only ML1 and can roll on biomancy, telekinesis, and special Lizardman table. Potential 1 unique named character would have ML2 or 3.

Racial SubTypes - Over the millions of years the Lizardmen evolved to their new home world and only 5 racial types remained. The Dinosaurs that came with them died out as well. However, the Lizardmen are masters of biology and have genetically engineered new dinosaurs as their living war engines
Lizards
Snakes
Turtles
Amphibians

All troop boxes would come with sprue parts to make Troops of either of the 4 racial types
Elites and Fast attack would have maybe 2 racial types to choose from

Special Rules
Warp Stones: Absorb the warp charge of any model/unit within 6 inches of lizardman model. When a lizardman model dies the warp energy is released as a small blast centered around the model. If the model is part of a unit the blast is absorbed by the other remaining Warp Stones. When the unit dies, a large blast is placed over the unit and anyone under the blast and within 6 inches of the blast gets hit.

Cold-Blooded: All Lizardmen units can roll three dice and choose the two lowest for Leadership tests. Also have Stubborn USR

Scaly Skin Armor values: Turtles 2+, Lizards 3+, Snakes 4 +, Amphibians 5+

Predatory Fighters (Lizards and Snakes Only): Gain +1 attack by rolling 6's to hit.
Poison Glands (Amphibians and Snakes Only): Melee attacks have Poison special rule
Natural Resistance: Immune to poison, flame attacks(Amphibians)
Relentless Hunters - (All)Move through cover and Relentless(Turtles)
Claws (Lizards and Turtles): Melee attacks have Shred and Rend USRs

Lizard men have next to no melee weapons instead they focus on modifications that enhance their natural weapons and abilities.

Base Stats
Turtles WS4, BS3, T5, S4, W2, I3, A2, Sv 2+
Lizards WS5, BS3, T4, S4, W1 ,I4, A2, Sv3+
Snakes WS5, BS2, T3, S4, W1, I6, A3, Sv4+
Amphi. WS3, BS5, T3, S3, W1, I5, A1, Sv5+

Units
HQ
Old Blood Commander - combat focused commander
Arbiter - strategic commender
Slaanite Priest - Unit buffer
Old One Priest - Psyker/Anti-Psyker Commander

Elites
BioTechnicians - Tech Priest equivalents, fix vehicles, heal units
Dragon Guard - Sword and Board - Elite Infantry equivalents Lich Guards
Dragon Claws - Shooting or Melee combat builds - Elite Infantry equivalents Terminators
Assassins - Scouts / Stealth Suits equivalents
Cold One Cavalry - Mounted Cavalry - TWC - Heavy Melee

Troops
Light Infantry - tec Marine types
Skirmishers - Jump Infantry
Warriors - Heavy Infantry
Dedicated transport - Triceratops like armored warbeast that troops would hang off the side of. Gunners on turrets on top. Some special rule that lets it drop units off then charge forward and tank shock targets. Assault vehicle

Fast
Terradon (Flying Monsterous Creature) Air to Ground Fighter
Ripperdactyl (Flying Monsterous Creature) Air to Air Fighter
Salamander Hunting Packs - Jet Bikes Shooting
Razordon Hunting Packs - Jet Bikes Melee

Heavy - These are all bipedal or quadrupedal walkers with armored plating (think Chaos demon engines) Would have similar abilities to the Triceratops transport where infantry units could be transported by hanging off the side, and would have a tank shock/rampage attack)
Would be cool if they had Low HP value and wounds.
For example, 2 HP, WS2, BSx(depending on the crew type), T10, S10, W5, Ax(specific number of attacks per model like bite, claw or tail) Sv2+
So Glaces would first knock off hp, then take off wounds, pens would take off hp and a wound. You'd still role on the pen table, but no explode results.

Stegadon Mobile Artillery Warbeast - AV12/11/10 - IG Basilisk sized, Open Topped Howitzer Tank with crew of 5 that can shoot out of it
Bastiladon Assault Warbeast - AV14/13/12 - Landraider sized, Heavy weapons platform
Troglodon Fast Attack Warbeast - AV13/12/11 - Predator Sized, Medium weapons platform

LOW
Carnosaur - Huge cyber T-Rex with a rider chassis on its back that has an AA Gun, arms replaced with guns as well - GARGANTUAN CREATURE
Can do melee bite and tail attacks.

I would like to do a silicon-based life form with a similar "instant adaptation" advantage as the Mass Effect Vorcha, but an intelligent species. Their warriors would have weapons and armor grafted in, and they would have an opportunity to "learn" from their opponents. They would gain advantages from being wounded but not completely destroyed by enemy weapons, and a unit under a sustained barrage or a long close combat would gain defensive abilities to become tougher as time went on.

Beyond that a Codex: Xenos Mercenaries would be AWESOME, with units that could be grafted on as Elite, HS and FA choices for other armies with mostly Allies of Convenience rules and maybe some special formations.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I would pick a race modeled after the Vorlons in Babylon 5. Energy creatures inside suits of armor -- except there are some that are out of armor, of course. Powerful Psychic abilities, small, expensive units, relatively little dakka (but big punch).

Of course, there is the small problem that Vorlons (out of armor) appeared differently to each race viewing them. But hey, can't win 'em all.

I think a scorpion based army. Where the models are similar to scorpions, and their rank only changed by what their stinger is like. So all models in a unit would use the same weapon except the pack leader would have one weapon different.

They would be a mob shooty army with terrible range, decent close combat and NO vehicles. They just don't have the technology to create combat vehicles (their ships take patience to fly due to their anatomy

It was my understanding that GW went to Blizzard to get a 40k game made. Some way through production, GW pulled out of the project.

As a giant to GW, Blizzard altered the names and released the game.

Then came the court case of GW vs Blizard over this. And I forget the details, but it basically came down to how new Video games were, allowing Blizzard to win.

I had an idea for something like a Dark Mechanicus army, but instead of worshipping Chaos they were an Explorator fleet that flew off into the Halo Stars and came back... changed. I guess they would sort of work like a 40K Vampire Counts army, as their base troops would be the corpses of their opponents powered by unholy technology, and their Techpriests would use heavily altered servo-harnesses to pull apart and then reassemble enemies in combat (so they could restore models to a damaged unit). Elites would be things like SM corpses encased in heavily modified power armour and then filled with powerful stimulants.

Either that, or a Thyrrus army, because an army that goes for spectacle instead of effectiveness in warfare just appeals to me

I actually considered making rules for the Guardians in Destiny.
The point would be to ally them to IG as a sort of "specialist" group where they would be fielded as squads of three to five guys and each one of them could specialise to one of the three classes, and therefore provide different forms of support.

Spoiler:
A unit of Guardians is composed of three Guardians that must be upgraded to one of the three classes for free.
A unit must have at least two different classes.

The unit may buy two extra Guardians that must also be promoted.

Basic Stats:

WS4 BS4 S3 T3 W2 I4 A2 Ld9 Sv4+
Carpace armor, Frag Grenades, Pulse Rifle (S4AP4 24" Rapid Fire), Pulse Pistol (S4AP5 12" pistol), Combat blade

Infantry

Scout, Night Vision

Defenders of humanity: models with this special rule are immune to Fear special rule (sorry guys )

Team of individuals: nominate one model in the unit to be the Squad leader. His Unit Type is now changed to Infantry (Character).
While he is alive, the squad has Split Fire special rule. If the entire unit chooses to shoot towards the same enemy unit they all have +1 BS for the rest of the phase.

The classes:

Titan:
Power armor, S4, FnP, Relentless
Magnetic reactors: models with this have 6+ Invunerable save against shooting.

Hunter:
Stealth, I5
Marksman: Ranger may shoot his gun as S1AP4 24" Heavy 1, Sniper instead.

Warlock:
Mastery level 1
Warlock knows only the following powers but may only cast one of them during a turn:
Shrouding - WC1
The Warlock and his unit have the Shrouding special rule.
Vortex Blast - WC1
Witchfire with the following profile: 12" S3AP2 Assault 1, Blast, Soul Blaze

Any model may upgrade their Pulse Rifle to one of the following (for an undetermined price):
- Scout Rifle (S4AP5 24" Assault 2) - free
- Fusion Rifle (S3AP3 18" Assault 1) - 5pts/model
- Autorifle (S5AP4 30" Heavy 2) - 5pts/model

The Hunter may replace his Pulse Rifle with another Pulse Pistol for free.
He may then upgrade any of his guns to a Hand cannon (S4AP4, 12", pistol, concussive) - 5pts/weapon

The Titan and Hunter may exchange their Combat blades to a Shock blade (S user AP5, Melee, Rending) - 10pts/model

The rules may be a bit over the top, but the point is that they are specialists who are able to work well against any enemy. Of course they should be priced accordingly.
