The tournament will be as follows...... Drum roll please ! Also big thank you to Kevin for printing out the cards for everyone. Any questions or concerns at day of tournament can be addressed to Steve as he will be running the event and be sole judge.
Primary -- Maelstrom 4 pts. (Adepticon cards for all 3 rounds)
Primary -- Eternal War 4 pts.
Tertiary -- 3 pt.
Fully painted army 1 pt. -- Support the Hobby !!!!
Missions as follows:
Round 1:
Eternal War
Maelstrom Mission 1
Round 2:
Emperor`s Will
Maelstrom mission 5
Round 3:
The Relic
Maelstrom Mission # 6 (no more than 3 pts. on turn 1)
Tertiary:
First Blood -- 1 pt.
Last laugh -- Last player to kill an enemy unit -- 1 pt.
Slay the Warlord -- 1 pt.
Line breaker -- 1 pt.
Break your enemy -- Kill all enemy troop units -- 1 pt.
Warlord`s own -- Your Warlord ends the game within 6 inches of the table center -- 1 pt.
Which ever players attains more of these objectives gets the 3 pts.
Entry fee is 20.00 of which 10.00 will be refunded in a store gift certificate .
Registration is at 09:00 and first die at 09:30
10 minute deployment and 2.5 hrs. Per round
Short break for lunch
3 rounds 1850 pts.
Armies must be painted at least 3 colors to get the bonus point
Forgeworld units and lists allowed
No ranged D
Armies must be WYSIWYG or reasonably close (no ridiculous proxies please )
Army list must come from a SINGLE source
I.E. -- you could not run a CAD then add in a formation even if from same codex.
No non Character LOW , I.E. -- Draigo is permitted to use but he would then count as a hq. choice
Any 2 up reroll will be a 2 up - 4 up
Stronghold Assault is not allowed
Only fortifications will be an Aegis , Bastion or landing pad
No 30K units allowed
When play testing the original tournament format the game took quite awhile. It was also pointed out that people might not enjoy having to do math to calculate battle points (which would also take even more time). The Tertiary is very close to some of the objectives used at Adepticon.
The concept here is to have a format that people ATTENDING the event want to see. Any and all feedback is always welcome and appreciated! Again we are trying to come up with a format that gives people that don`t have the latest death star , power list etc. a chance to win. I reviewed each of these missions and hand picked them. Sometimes the simpler the better. No one wants to come to an event and get steamrolled every game. This way offers different chances to win or at least accrue points each round. Our group and the store is going to try to get in 6-8 tournaments a year. That is why I really want to get in a format that people enjoy and want to come out for.

Trying to mitigate First Blood , first turn is so huge in the game . The warlord one is something similar to what Adepticon had, there`s was I believe touching the board center. Does anyone have any suggestions for what else we could substitute for the six tertiary objectives? Steve what do you think of the proposed revised format? I`m looking for any input to improve the format. I`ll be play testing it out tomorrow.

Ok guys little bat rep from play testing. We played the missions we would use for round 1. Kevin had Grey Knights I ran Orks.
1: Grey Knights won primary Maelstrom 10-8
2: Grey Knights won Eternal War 3-1 on objectives
3: Grey Knights won tertiary 2-0
Kevin had a total of 11 pts. Only missing out on the 1 pt. for being fully painted.
BIG win for the Grey Knights (well played by Kevin!)
Thoughts ... If you don't kill the Dreaknights they will mow you. That's for sure . As for the play testing . I thought it was actually exciting trying to find the different ways to win . Thinking what objectives to cover how to get a tertiary point etc. was a lot of fun . We did 5 turns in 2.5 hrs. With no rushing at all. So time wasn't a problem for the format.
We did run into one problem. Having to roll the die for Maelstrom then look them up took A LOT of game time. Kevin is going to try to print actual cards up so we don't have this problem. The rolling and looking up was a serious drain on game time. Hopefully Kevin can get the cards printed up to avert this problem.
Overall I really enjoyed the play testing and the format. It really makes you think and have to make choices. From our first game it did what it was supposed too. That is make the game a little more about skill , decision making and target priority. Rather than a net list Death Star rolling everything it touches.
Might be onto something here !

If you don't like First Blood there was a style I remember hearing about that would award a point at the end of a game turn if one player killed an opponent's unit without having one of his own destroyed. Biggest problem I heard with that is that some players considered it too much bookkeeping or would forget to do it.

Hey Haldir, due to a rather optimistic painting regime that clashed with work and real life, I won't be bringing sisters since I won't have them finished in time (I know it's not a rule, but I prefer to play fully painted armies at tournies). Instead I'm going to be running Grey Knights. Oh, and just to confirm, it's not CAD only, I can still use the Nemesis Strike Force Detachment from the GK book, right?
Oh, and do you have an official ruling on Deep Strike shenanigans? Quick recap is that Grey Knights can run and shoot or shoot and run the turn they arrive from Deep Strike Reserves (specifically says deep strike reserves in the rule), but some have argued that that counts for Gate of Infinity as well even though you're not coming from reserves. I won't suggest which way I think it works or second guess, I'm absolutely not trying to start a rules discussion here, only interested in what the official ruling is for the tournament so I can plan accordingly. Thanks.

Bringing the detachment is no problem. Kevin runs the same and is coming. Him and I play as you can run and shoot the turn you arrive from deep strike .I think that's right? We can go over it with a Steve (judge) before hand . But it shouldn't be a problem. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I don't believe that would count as Gate of Infinity .

For this one all armies must come from a single source. If you ran 2 Cad's from the same codex that would be two sources. However I'm going to take a poll at the tournament. To open the next one too 2 detachments per army. However they must be from the same faction or battle brothers.

I suggest getting rid of first blood, last blood and warlord near the center. First blood is always gotten by the first turn player, last blood can be slow played and doesnt really mitigate first blood, and warlord in the center is very very biased. If you put a strong hq in the center with a retinue he either wins it or denies it most of the time it would seem.
I was reading somewhere of kill points but as points. So 200pts of units equal 2 pts for the secondary. That might be interesting for a secondary but i have not played that out yet
I would rather see simple eternal war with the maelstrom that you are using for this tourney. Also i would like to be able to take one detach but maybe only do battle brothers or you own codex. So Space marine with a BA detach. I think you might start getting into some forgeworld strangeness then. I think some codexes will struggle against the new eldar and necron FOC and formations.

The only issue I have with only allowing only battle brother allies is that it disadvantages armies with a narrow allies matrix *coughTyranidscough* whereas it rewards armies with access to the entire imperium of man. If you allow something like self-ally, this is mitigated since every army is at least on equal footing.
I think this format is a good starting point. The idea that the 11th company GT had where you could determine your victory conditions to an extent after seeing your opponents' list was pretty cool since it was then about who was the better general and not who had the best net list (in theory). There is a lot going on in this format, so maybe it could be simplified a touch, but overall I like it. First blood is kind of necessary I think because otherwise going second for objectives is just too good. Last laugh also balances out first blood somewhat, but you're not always going to get a kill point on the last turn, just like you won't always get first blood if you go first

I agree on a lot of Luke's points. That's why I'm glad we are getting a good turnout. I really want to poll and see what the guys would like in an event. Hey Luke I'm already thinking 4 Flyrants ...... !!!
From play testing all the missions it seems to work pretty well. I also like the way it gives people multiple ways to accrue at least some points each round. It's not fun for anyone getting a zero each round. Also people should be rewarded for coming in with a painted army. Personally I think awesome terrain with fully painted armed really enhances the game.
