I can't say I've ever stopped playing an army because it was too popular in my area.

In fact, I'm the only regular at my local store (a GW store) who regularly brings Eldar. But I got tired of winning regularly with the same units over and over. Didn't help that I didn't want to lug my Crimson Hunter around every Saturday.

So, I'm starting up one of the most commonly played armies around here - Space Marines!

On the other hand, I will be running them with some very infrequently used Tactics - either Raven Guard or Fire Hawks.

The thing is though, just change your army to a different faction, or bring less seen models, and your army is fairly hipster again!

Yeah, I started Daemons because I felt that my Necrons were getting a bit stale, but I kind of wish I had just kept collecting Crons and gotten other models that I didn't use, rather than starting a new army.

I don't hate my Daemons, but I play them less and less now and sorta wish I had put the $$ into more Necrons or something that could at least easily ally with them.

Most forgeworld units. Reskins of marines or a tank with extra armor aren't FW units, they're GW units with a reskin. Just as an example, looked at the ultramarines page. Everything on it, except for 2 models, were just standard GW units with a slightly different look, using rules made by GW, not FW.

Yes most "FW stuff" isn't overpowered... they all use GW rules but look different. "FW units", however, which use FW made rules, about 90% of them are better than GW units.

Random statistic, cool.

Yes Azrael, they mean some.

The reason I've stuck with DA is because I've only encountered another DA player in a tournament once. I've asked if there were more other times when I wasn't there, and apparently they are not popular in my local meta (of course, they are a bottom tier army right now, but that is a discussion for another time). I've started amassing a Khorne Daemonkin army mainly because it is new (and therefore perhaps fewer people will be playing it yet). Also, the Khorne-aligned models (both Daemons and CSM units) are pretty badass looking, especially the new 'Thirsters!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Have any of you benched an army because too many people in the area/ flgs have began to play it?

I kind of did. My friend gave me his Space Marines and I just cannot find it in me to play such a "commoners" army so to speak. I could but... Meh. So it sits. Ive even added to it...so they can sit more expensively. Lol.

Not shelving no, but the presence of another DE player has motivated me to go with a mostly codex list as he is going covens.

The only Tank heavy IG I've seem at my store is my own.

Other IG are mostly infantry blob with like 2 or 3 tanks.

heck, Im the only truly heavy armor army in the stores I go to.
I can't think of anyone of the armies I've seen in my area that has as many tanks as I do. The closest I've seen is a DKoK army that had plenty of tanks but my Steel Tide has yet to be matched in sheer weight.

I will never shelve my machines. not after all the effort.

I really like my local community, nobody hates on another persons army choice, calls it OP, all that stuff. Hipster wise every single one of us have either owned or used to own a space marine army (that's if you include wolves and BA and DA) while we have pretty much one of everything else, except we have 2 guard, 2 tau, and nobody owns Dark Eldar anymore.

To make me even feel more special I run FE tau, and the other guy runs kroot heavy

and yes i shelved the assassins tho i am considering making 2k worth of assassins just for the silly factor

That's the main reason I don't play SMs; too many people play them. I didn't go far, and went Alpha Legion! I think everyone wants their army to be unique.

Well, maybe not UM players.

As someone who got into this game later, and plays against people who have been collecting for years and in some cases decades, when I look at building a new army, I do tend towards something that I both like and that none of my friends have alot of.

This isn't due to hipsterism, but just for variety. I don't mind playingn with my friends models, and they trust me to play wih them, so if I want to play with an army one of my friends has, I just ask.

I sort of want to start a Mantis Warriors army. We've got lots of SM players, including SW, BA, Raptors, Ultras and Minotaurs but not a lot of MW.

I dunno, Ultramarines are billed as so common etc they proably have that special reverse hipster factor to em "no one does em cause they're so common so I'm unique!"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

I never would instead I would be excited to see tons of new DE players, I just can't see how the army you love become successful and having tons of players pick it up can be considered a bad thing.

Unless his rules have been updated while I wasn't looking, since his option to spend a warp charge to increase his 2+ to a 2++ happens at the start of your turn when you've got no warp charge to spend, it doesn't actually work.

 Azreal13 wrote:

He probably means most of the ones you see, because not many people are willing to spend huge $'s on something that's worse than the normal version, hence, people only buy and field the stuff that's underpointed. For example, how many thunderhwak transporters do you think they've sold compared to the normal thunderhawk?

As to blatent OP'ness, see Severin Loth, Fire Raptor Gunships, Y'Vahra, the old R'Varna, the Remora, the Sicaran, the Achillies, the Caestus, the Scorpius, Contemptor Mortis with double kheres assault cannons, luscious patern drop pods, Rapier weapons batteries, Typhon, battle of keylek legacy, schism of mars legacy, the Hornet, the Lynx, Blight Drones, Necron Pylons and Tomb Stalkers.

I'm sure there's half a dozen more bits of cheese, and probably double that amount that's simply great instead of brokenly good even compared to GW codex imbalance.

Don't get me wrong, for every one of the brokenly good stuff in the list above, you get crap like the Decimator, pretty much all of the malador variants, the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT, javelin speeder, arvus lighter, some of the heavier Tau XV8's and 9's and half the badab characters along with virtually all the krieg infantry options.

Yeah but you automatically have at least one warp charge, so you just minus one when you get to your psychic phase.

I've benched My Tau, as the two people I'll play with regularly also play Tau. ((even though I probably have the most well rounded of the three armies))

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....
