You're asking the tough questions haha.

While I like all aspects I would say that gameplay slightly trumps aesthetics. I want my army to look good, but I also want it to be playable.

I usually go for more elite based armies, I like to paint every detail on a model and so Elite armies are usually more effective at allowing me to do that. But in terms of gameplay, speed is always fun for me.

Orks.

Cuz whatever army you get you will regret because you let a poll choose it for you. Orks can be extremely cheap second hand.

Another alternative on the same lines is marines.

Im fully committed to any army. The problem isn't that I don't like any of them, but that I like aspects of each of them.

If you are looking for a competitive army, the most competitive armies are Eldar, Necrons, and Imperial Knights.

Look... Wanna be competetive? Eldar, imperial knights, space marines/grey knights combo, necrons. Wanna just have fun? Any army you like. However if you go orks, don't listen to these people saying " oh you'll be sad watching boys die" heck no! You watch as while yes 15 boys die, but 30 take their place! It's like an army of immortals! A green tide!(haha) I have never ever, win or lose, not had fun. They kill things they shouldn't be able to, and can't kill things they should! It's so interesting and baffling sometimes what they can and can't do! Such wackiness! Also.. I need to retract my statement.. you NEVER lose as orks.. if orks fought, orks won.

As more of a collector, I have several armies because well they are super cool. I was like I have to get this model (vostroyans, bloodthirster, eldar jetbikes). Orks are the most fun, plus you if like to convert stuff you can get a vehicle from another army and slap some orky bits on it for a battlewagon. Get like an Ork trukk and use the ramshackle bits on anything, or parts from a WHFB chariot. Sky is the limit for fun hobby conversions with Orks, I even put a sound box in the back of a battlewagon.
if you just want to win pick someone else, if you want the funniest goofiest bastards in the galaxy go Orks.

WAAAGH!!!

Hey dakka,

So I've been trying to get into 40k for a bit now, but there has been just one problem, I can't seem to make up my f*ing mind about what army to pick. So after several months of trying to figure it out on my own. I've decided to let the wonderful people of this forum pick for me. Whatever army is picked I will start a project log and upload pictures so people can follow along if they are interested.

Please help me make my mind.

Not all armies are included in this poll as I've managed to at least eliminate a few that I dont want to play.

Give us criteria.

What would you enjoy modeling and painting?

What play style would you enjoy?

I usually prefer midrange, to close range shooting followed by melee. Which is why Tau isnt up there, cause they seem to be stuck in long range shooting.

As for modeling, I really cant pick. They are all awesome in their own way. Dark Eldar have a predatory look, Eldar have really beautiful models, Orks look fun, Space Marines/ Grey knights all look heroic. It's an impossible choice.

Oh also possibly the most expensive army unless you scratchbuild everything. Mabye even still then. Dont believe me? Look up the price for mek guns, THEN look up exactly how many points they cost on the field.

That sounds either like space wolves or blood angels.

Or orks.

Mek gunz are easily converted by even the most basic of meks

Step 1: Gather a pile of random gun bits.
Step 2: Glue them all together
Step 3: Get a drink of fugus beer for all your hard work
Step 4: ????
Step 5: WAAAAAAGH DAKKADAKKADAKKA!!!!!!!!

Well usually I step in and say Space Marines, but maybe you ought to reconsider 40k altogether. I mean I thought I was just getting into a hobby when I started. I had no idea that I would be spending so much money and playing so few games.

If you really want to play 40k, just get some used gak and be satisfied with that. Honestly I haven't picked up my paints in months because it feels like as soon as I turn around GW feths up whatever it was I was interested in. Oh Brettonia looks cool, GW nukes the old world. I decide I love Marines and am going to build and play several armies out of the codex. They drop a new codex. I used go really dig GW, even though they were pricey, but now I read the news and it gets me down. Those AdMech Robots that sold out the day they hit? No one really wanted em that bad, they only made x amount. The board games? All limited run? feth me I can't even play Space Hulk.

I dunno dude, I'm sorry to say it but this Hobby is a disappointment.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Didn't read the whole thread, but I voted Space Wolves. Space Wolves excel as a highly mobile, short range fire power army, backed up with assault power. Here's why:

Grey Hunters. All Grey Hunters get Bolter, Bolt Pistol and Chainsword. Two Grey Hunters upgrade their Bolter to a Flamer, and one upgrades his chainsword to a Powerfist.

Now mount the unit in a Rhino, and field as many of them in your army as you have points for.

Most of the armies you will face will be MEQs. Most MEQs have A 1 in close combat, but your Grey Hunters have Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, so they will all swing 2 attacks. The advantage will be your in close combat. And the guy with the powerfist isn't a character. He's just a guy carrying wargear, like any other Space Marine carrying a Heavy Bolter or Missile Launcher. So he can't be challenged to single combat by a high I mook with a powersword.

Now sometimes you won't face MEQ armies. Sometimes you'll face 'Nids or Orks, armies they you really don't want to be in close combat with. But what do those armies have in common? A whole bunch of units with only a 5+ save. For those armies you drive up 11.5 inches in your Rhino, hop out, and literally light them up with two S4 AP 5 Flamer templates & S4 AP 5 rapid fire bolter fire. If any live to assault you on their turn then Space Wolves have the Counter Attack rule and their two swings in close combat.

I agree with Dark City Dweller. Knowing the type of play that you enjoy is a huge factor in 40k. As someone who started with Csm in 2nd, moved to Ravenwing in 4th, sold both of those and went on hiatus. I picked up Blood Angels for 7th and found a love for Necrons. I can understand the frustration of having the wrong army for yourself. Csm always felt underpowered. Ravenwing got such a huge nerf due to Rending changing, and Blood Angels just felt like a one trick pony to me. I love 'crons for their resilience. I prefer to be shooty, and be able to win the attrition game. To me, that is what I like. I hate to pick models off the table. So, Necrons are a great fit for me. On my hiatus, I even played Warmachine/Hordes. I loved the ease of utilizing my opponent's lack of skill to protect their caster. I played Legion of Ever blight. They have always been considered op because they focus on the opponent to make mistakes. I feel Necrons do the same. Hard to kill, but you must focus fire to defeat them.

Pick something that you like the flavor of. Models are a great starting point to. But also know what that army excels at. That is when you find the most fun.

And remember. 7th edition does favor shooty armies by far. This may change next edition.

Since you're making a blog and posting pictures or what not, I was thinking nicely painted Eldar would be most interesting to view. However, looks like Orks are in the lead so please have some grots or gnobblers converted into grots. I also think some squigs with rockets on top of them with a grot on top of the rocket would make some nice Storm Boyz.

Seems like Orks always win out in these "Pick my next army!" threads. With that said, I voted Orks and always do. I don't play them (yet), but they sure are crazy awesome! Definitely my second favorite 40k army. A nice ridiculous balance for all that grim-dark!
