Hey dakka,

So I've been trying to get into 40k for a bit now, but there has been just one problem, I can't seem to make up my f*ing mind about what army to pick. So after several months of trying to figure it out on my own. I've decided to let the wonderful people of this forum pick for me. Whatever army is picked I will start a project log and upload pictures so people can follow along if they are interested.

Please help me make my mind.

Not all armies are included in this poll as I've managed to at least eliminate a few that I dont want to play.

What do you like? Close combat? Shooty stuff? Do you want it to be fun or competitive?

Eldar, followed by Space Marines.

They're typically never made into bad armies and almost every unit is usable, save a few outliers. Their fluff allows for amazing conversion capabilities, color schemes, and both offer a diverse host of effective allies.

Space Marines. They're a fun, pretty good intro army, and have tons of customizability.

Seriously why cant GW right a single Ork Codex that is so incredibly OP compared to our last three that it puts us on equal footing with Necrons/Eldar/Space Marines.

Don't get me wrong, I win more then I lose with my Orks, but that has a lot to do with me understanding how to focus fire and model placement/objective securing, compared to my competitors which usually consist of 25-40 year olds who play Space Marines and rely on the drop pod assault or spamming bikes/vehicles to mess up my orks.

It would just be nice to have 3-5 units of Orks that are so amazing that it becomes almost impossible not to field them.

I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you mess with me, I'll kill you all

Whatever army you start, you need to be excited for it right when you pick up the models. If picking them up doesn't make you want to play with them, then it's not the right army for you.

Space Marines. They may be somewhat underpowered and have no real shooting capacity. Or close combat capacity. Or anything, really...except, of course, for the ability to control the board by falling out of the sky en masse...if you're willing to pay 30-60 bucks a pop for drop pods. On the other hand, they are warhammer and their models pretty much never get dropped. Play IG, and you may be playing with a model that will drop from the codex a few years from now. Space marines? Not so much.

Space Marines: Jacks of all trades yet masters of GRAV CANNONS!!!.

It has 7 HQs, 2 Troop types with Dedicated Transports, 5 Elite units, 5 Fast Attack units, 6 Heavy Support units, 2 Formations with unique units not in the rest of the codex, and 2 LOW choices.

In case the OP hasn't figured it out, answers like these are trying to mess with you. Orks are commonly reputed to be the worst and most underpowered codex in the game.

Underpowered sure, but if all your doing is playing to win anyways then you and I have different goals in mind.

And no I'm not trying to mess with him, that is indeed my opinion on the matter

As an ork, I voted orks

Orks.

Im an imperial guard player myself, however orks is the choice which jumps out at me for several reasons.

1) Although not at all considered a top tier army, orks are simple to play; just get your units into close combat (for the vast majority of ork armies this applies, unless you max out on lootas and make a shooty army)
2) The models are among the coolest, and easiest to paint. Watching your hordes of boyz charging up the battlefield never gets old
3) Certain armies you listed such as dark eldar, are undeniably not beginner armies. They are not forgiving and require a well constructed battle plan to be executed in order for victory. Orks on the other hand don't require such tactics a newbie may have trouble devising; you can always go for brute force and sheer weight of numbers to table your opponent, or push them off objectives etc.
4) People love ork players, as the army is generally regarded as the opposite of "cheese"
5)The backround behind orks is hilarious; they are the only race in 40k having fun

I should probably make it clear, Im not a beginner. I took a break from the game about 5 months ago but before that I played for about 3 years. And Im not half bad at painting either so no army really fazes me.

I voted Orks cuz they're the best race in 40k. Period.

That being said. Don't pick them up unless you're willing to make a really big investment in money and time. You need a lot and Orks are a pain to paint because of all the little details (straps, buckles, earings, armor plates, etc).

Also, don't pick them up if you want to play competitively.

SM/Eldar/'Crons. SM are getting a remake, and worst case for them, everything is decent. Same for eldar, they have 0 bad units, and crons... Decurion. Need I say more?

I'd REALLY say don't go orks. Orks have probably one of the weakest codexes out there honestly. You just might not enjoy playing them, as removing entire squads turn by turn can be quite saddening.

That being said, Orks have great fluff, great models, and support a ton of fun modeling. (Name a theme, orks can do it. Hell, I've seen 'nid conversions with orks for stuff (i.e. orks on a 'fex to proxy as a deff dread type of thing)

I voted for Orks because they are da biggest an' da best!

Orks were my first love all the way back in 97 and I still love them even if I mostly use my Sisters now a days (although I am thinking about painting up a fresh 100 boyz for a green tide) They are fun to paint and have the best background fluff in the game. Plus they are the best army to let your inner mek free with heaps of conversions. Big conversions, cool conversions, silly conversions it just doesn't matter.

Finally Ork players are universally loved as many Ork players focus on modelling/painting and having fun. We're not the kind of people who are taking Wraithknights to a 600pts friendly game if you know what I mean...

On a site called "dakkadakka." What else did you expect?

I am taking a break from engorging my already large IG armada, and starting an ork army. Also giving my eldar and SM a break.

I'm liking my choice so far. Especially in the scratchbuilding arena, orks just seem like a great adventure.

Two lines of questions for you OP:

1) Are you concerned with game-play or modelling first? If I was to pick an army purely on aesthetic, it would be different from picking one based on play style and relative codex strength.

2) What kind of feel are you looking for? What do you imagine the ideal army structure to look like, in terms of mentality, morality, play-style? Do you like big clunky vehicles, or fast streamlined-speeders? Do you like brute force or tactical precision? Do you like the idea of a hoard army, or a smaller, more-elite force?

Answering these questions should narrow it down for you. I would not trust the "wisdom" of the internet when there is money on the line like investing in a new army.
