Mountains out of molehills here. Digital is nice and convenient, and the rules are free.

GW finally gives out free rules after years of people claiming the rules are overpriced for the base game. Now it's used as ammunition to be mad at GW still? There really is no pleasing some people.

Would you be happy about being given a foul apple?

This "IT'S FREE IT'S AWESUM" attitude always worries me. How does being free constitute any sign of quality? If anything is bad or has severe flaws, those flaws don't suddenly go away and being free and being able to criticize a product aren't mutually exclusive either.

This thread doesn't bring up the quality though. In fact, the OP was quick to declare the value of a book independent of what is in it.

This is about the medium. So in your example you're choosing between getting a foul apple for free in a convenient bag or buying it in a store and having to lug it around in your hand.

Let's imagine a worst case scenario where GW wages a war on the printed word and only releases rules via online pdf. Let's further assume that you can't afford internet and can't afford a tablet. Despite your obvious financial woes, you've decided to play Warhammer and require printed rules.

1. Go to an electronics store and buy the smallest thumb drive you can get. Should cost about $5.
2. Go to a library or internet cafe and use their internet to download the pdf files from Games-Workshop.com. Put them on your thumb drive. Should cost about $0-$10 depending on where you go.
3. Go to a printing facility (local school/office supply place/etc) and print out your files. Should cost about $10 or less depending on the quality you select.

In other words, stop panicking. If you can't solve a basic problem like this, access to the rules for a GAME are the least of your worries.

I know where I live, that's a pretty large over-estimation of cost.
My breakdown would be
You can skip the flash drive - $0
Go to local library and lookup the pdfs - $0
Print out the rules at the library ($0.10 per page) - $0.40

You now have your printed book at a total cost of 40 cents.

Then you can print out your warscrolls for probably about the same amount.

*edit*
and if GW goes app only and doesn't upload the pdfs to their website for download, someone out there will make a pdf of them and share. I've got nearly every old WD issue up to switching to the weekly thing (I think I'm missing like maybe 10 issues total)

Fortunately, your Windows phone can still view PDFs and access the internet, so you're able to get all your free rules just fine.

And in all fairness, you bought a phone that has, what, a 3% market share? You shouldn't be surprised that the overwhelming majority of mobile phone software doesn't work on it. This is something a tiny amount of basic research would have told you on the day you bought your phone. You can't expect companies to cater to a 3% market share. Makes no business sense. iOS and Android cover the majority of users.

I was intentionally overestimating. Realistically, most people could just go visit a friend who DOES have internet and a printer and print for free. It's not like we're talking that many pages.

My point was that even without a tablet and internet that you can get a hard copy of the rules for less than GW currently charges. Sure, you won't get the glossy pictures and hard binding, but you'll get a hard copy.

Yeah, I get that.
Really, this whole thread is pretty pointless as it's only someone's complaint that they don't want to move with the times.

It's like complaining that music went to mp3 instead of staying with the vinyl formal

I enjoy my Windows phone. It's quite a step above androids and iphones as far as design is concerned. The blockiness and bright colors really scream out to me. Also there are plenty of apps on it that I use on a daily basis (FB, IG, various games...) and it makes me happy. I also only paid $50 for it. I'm not really complaining, just wishing GW would release a Windows version.

The funny thing is, a tablet is infinetly cheaper in the long run. My Samsung cost me 125 bucks at staples, and is compact and runs great. My Samsung will allow me to use the PDFs anywhere I go for EVERY army and all the rules which are free now without carrying heavy as sin books. Not the death of games by any means.

And honestly, i can't figure a single person other than the elderly who don't have a smart phone of some kind these days.

The thing that the majority of people have now a days?

At least we dont need to worry about people with pirated copies of things.
While i think its a great idea to embrace technology. im pretty sure GW will figure out a way to botch it.

100% digital and no print material is fine with me. From a business standpoint it makes total sense. Printing is expensive, then you have shipping, storage, insurance, it's way more than the cost of materials that matters.

I would agree with the above statement, but I also hold that digital only releases narrow the audience.

I am perfectly capable of downloading a file and printing it or using my phone. I just don't want to. Some may look at their bookshelves and wonder why they own 200lbs of paper, I look at those same bookshelves and drool.

In a hobby where literally no one knows what it is, I can't say that limiting your output can be a good thing.

Also, when I drop my rulebook, I pick it back up. When I drop my tablet, there tends to be a lot of swearing. I can't imagine I'd be a very good opponent after that...

Funny. I'm the complete opposite on that one.

I'm not sure it really disenfranchises enough of the potential marketshare to matter. They are attempting to target a totally new audience. Presumably one that upwardly mobile, social, and connected to a wide network. If you are going to try and sell expensive models, it's probably not worth your marketing dollars to cater to folks that probably don't have an iPad (or similar device) laying around in the first place.

Honestly, I can't fathom how you would drop the tablet. I can safely say I've never dropped my tablet ever. When in use, I have the 'kick stand' folio that it gets carried in so it's propped a safe distance from the edge of the table. And if I pick it up, I rarely need to lift it more than a few inches off the table to read the screen. So if I ever DID drop it, it'd just fall (in folio) on the foam wartables we use.

But honestly, dropping tech can happen anywhere. Not just because of your wargaming. Books are also just as likely to get ruined from the same things. Dropping can warp the book/ruin/scuff the bindings and bend pages. Spills can total a book. Then there's ripping of pages, etc. Yeah, that book is a 'lesser' investment. But then there's the downside of how many you need and their overall weight, making them just as cash intensive as a tablet with free rules for everything, but lighter overall...

I know it's a tomato tomahto situation in regards to what people prefer. But honestly, giant rulebooks for dolls has become a bit of an out dated concept. We've enough to carry to each game. We have the tech, there's no excuse to not use it. Especially if it's saving customers on their bottom line and getting them into the game.
