The Frostgrave book and plastic soldiers box were on sale at Historicon. Have to say, the box looks pretty good.

Would be great if you could post another of your review articles on that game Manchu.

It's a lovely looking book for that game, have heard some good things about it, but on the negative side that it's quite complex and there seemed to be a lot of counters and tokens lying around on the board in the games I saw.

I'v been using some of the older Empire spear and handgunner models (the two piece starter set ones from years back) with a Reaper Bones model for my wizard. I think Reaper is supplying most of my groups wizards honestly, but two other group members are using the Fireforge games minis for their warbands.

Since I have plenty of Japanese and Korean models already I will still be using black hat. I explored other options but black hat was the best value option. Maybe not the absolute best models out there but certainly nice models for the price.

Have you thought about taking a look through the L5R Clan Wars range? There's a good assortment of Japanese styled wizards in it and they average about $7 a figure.

My personal favorite is Isawa Tadaka, I've bought him a number of times to use as a base for conversions:

I intend to borrow heavily from my old Rackham based WHFB army, and my terrifyingly deep collection of Rackham bits, mostly anyway. I might throw in some Circle Orboros models for variety, as well as maybe some more historically accurate stuff. I do have a Ronin monk warband I am working on....

My main band is going to be Celt themed, with a Witch based wizard and apprentice.

Spoiler:

That's not my painting, but I have a few of him floating around.
Spoiler:

Chick on the left will be the apprentice.
Spoiler:

Knight and some I dunno, thugs or warriors...

Spoiler:

I have no idea. At this point I am just super excited to use some models that haven't seen the table in some 2-3 years!

Oh hell, I forgot all the Red Box Games stuff floating around here! Oh man... I could probably run a 5 player game using only my stuff at this point.

So happy

I went 'big' and got a Level 5 package - even though I don't like all of the 'official' Wizards and Apprentices.

I do like most though...

The plastics here are great though - and I'll be putting them all on round bases - just because!

I'm also going to be using a lot of Otherworld miniatures stuff - especially now that I FINALLY go the last of my rewards from their INDIEGOGO campaign!

What are your plans for monsters? Are people thinking they will play with randoms, or just stick to PvP outside scenarios? It seems like scattering monsters around would be a nice touch, and maybe give a few XP for the wizards killing them.

Definitely planning on having random monsters appear and act...randomly!

I get my rulebook today, so hopefully there are already rules to cover that?

There are rules for that. There are rules for where they appear, how they act, and a cool table to randomly select what monsters appear that game. Plus, a whole bestiary section with stats for all the different types of monsters. I think it adds a lot to the game and will definitley be using them.

For those Lucky Few with the rules:

1) Do they say what base size everything goes on?

2) Or, does it not matter, within reason?

Thanks!

I don't think it actually says. The pictures of the frostgrave minis are all on their cast on mini-bases, except for the Mantic zombies which are on their square bases. (For the sharp eyed, there's also the Gorilla from Bushido making an appearance).

Yea, nothing on base size or really even guidelines beyond terrain needing to be 1" apart to move through without paying penalties. I take that to mean they suggest a 1" (25mm) base, but no reason why you couldn't use a 32mm and just recall that rule or something.

I've decided to use this game as an excuse to make some Elder Scroll themed models. So I've started a warband of Morrowind Dunmer, and'll probably expand that out to other groups. I'll probably throw up a thread here at some point of my endeavors.

As for the actual content of the first band its frankly just a case of me making the models first and then working out the profiles around those. I've already started on a mounted unit only to discover that the game doesn't have those, but meh, I'll probably just houserule that.

I know my brother wants to give it a try, so I've decided to repurpose my Menoth figures for this. Once I've got a couple more figures done, I'll post a pic of my warband.

I'm playing my 1st games of this tomorrow.

I am bringing 2 bands from my (now retired) WHFB armies:

1 Beastman mob led by a Witch Bray Shaman

1 Empire band led by a Soothsayer

Hope to give each one a trial run to get a feel for the polar opposites.

My group did some demo games today. Cleric vs Sigilist then Cleric vs Necromancer. Somehow most of us seem to have gone straight for crossbows rather than bows, oops :$ Must be that tasty +2 Damage!

Terrain seems seriously important though, both to block shooting (+2 Damage I tell you!) and to block magic, a LOT of spells are simply "Do you have LOS? Yes? Go nuts." So there was a good bit of Mind Control being thrown around (we had no were near enough terrain honestly). Combats fairly deadly too, but it seems like a nice enjoyable game.

Really liking the idea of Necromancer, but as a Dwarf player in WHFB, Sigilist speaks to me on a primal level... I suppose I could always do both...

Had our first game just now. My Elementalist vs. my wife's Illusionist. Tied on treasure but she got more kills. Very enjoyable game! We look forward to getting some more figures and playing a campaign (we're using Bones minis).

Nice looking stuff Mathieu! I am sad I have yet to acquire any of the Rackham Kelt Fiana models. I really need to rectify that soon... I should also have used spoilers, to my shame :(

Where's the summoner model from? That would be sweet in one of my Ronin warbands.

It is from Kensei. The internal onmyooji box, I believe. Alas, I gave away a Fianna to a friend many moons ago, so I do not have the full set. But I will be using them as infantrywomen. They are, after all, carrying a 2 handed weapon...

And have some leather on them... somewhere.

Thanks for the tip on Kensei. If I come across some spare fiannas I will let you know!
