GW's coloured sprays have always been limited release in the past as well. Luckily the first time GW came out with coloured sprays I didn't have enough money to buy up on them and discovered before buying any that they were going out of stock... since then I've stayed away from GW's coloured sprays. But I have often resorted to GW's White as an undercoat. It's never given me any problems and has always given a good base for painting over. I doubt those ones are going anywhere, I assume it's only the colour matched ones that are going? Nevelon wrote: Mymearan wrote:Many people do not RTFM as evidenced by the many AP complaints I've seen on FB etc :-) To be fair, even if you do read the can, spraying with a rattle can involves a hefty amount of voodoo a/o other magics to ensure a clean coat. When things like humidity, temp (of both the air and model) wind gusts, and probably the angle of the sun impact the results, it’s easy to screw up. It takes a good amount of experience and a weather eye to tell when you can go out and spray. Or just be old enough to feel the weather in your joints/bones. Being old and decrepit does have some perks.
I have heard with AP it varies with colour. I've heard more complaints about yellow than anything else. And yeah, if a can is ultra sensitive to things like spray distance, it'll probably also be ultra sensitive to things like ambient temperature and humidity.

No worries, there's a lot of other companies making great spray cans of acrylic primers in a variety of colors.

I've tried generic spray primers from hardware stores, but they always have way to grainy a pigment to use for miniatures. The only miniature primer at my local store is GW, so it's that and the occasional tournament trip where I can get Army Painter. Never really had a problem with either although both are hideously expensive (AP almost as expensive as GW).

Halfords Grey Primer, Halfords Matt Black and Halfords White. Never had a problem. Been using those for many years.
Also handy for Bolt Action undercoating are the Halfords camo range - brown, khaki and green - although they're pricier.
If those don't cover my needs, Army Painter does.

Personally, I use "Design Master" SPT Primer. Great coverage, dries quickly and it's available from Michael's for $10 a can. My last can lasted 8 months and I had no issues with separation or drying. It's not designed specifically for miniatures (just for general priming needs) so it can cover thickly if you are not paying attention.

I also recommend Tamiya primers. I got a couple online quite cheap, but they may be sometimes tricky to find - they don't seem to be that popular. They are really good, but the cans are smaller though.

I long ago swapped from GW sprays to Montana sprays. They're less than half the price here in AUS, have infinitely more available colours (if you click the link, click 'see all colours'). My wife is the stock manager for an art shop so I get them for like $7 a can and they work great. I don't miss GW colours.

Was in a GW store yesterday and chatted to the manager about it and he denied that it was being stopped. He claimed that GW order massive batches from the paint maker and then that is sent out from there to all the stores.
apparently the reason no store seems to have it is because there was a mess up with the main GW order so there's been no deliveries to the stores.
I don't really believe him. I've tried two different GW stores and 3 independent stockists and they all just happen to have run out of the 3 coloured sprays yet all have plenty of black and white sprays?

I think that is the way forwards for priming. You don't need the full control of an expensive brush, and you get better control than with a spray can.
It doesn't matter so much if you muck up a cheapo brush by not cleaning it properly. If you don't have a compressor you can run it off cans of gas.

+1 to Halfords Matt Black Spray Paint after a reccommendation from Dakka (HairySticks I believe - cheers).
This is not a primer, but then neither is Chaos Black and I primed my mini's for years with this and have had no problems at all.
I had the same issue as others with AP coloured primer giving a grainy finish. This is due to it drying in the air before hitting the model. I may have been guilty of not RTFM before spraying. I most likely just used the same distance as I had been with GW which looks like it would have caused the issue I had.

So no one has had problems using a matt black that's not necessarily a primer? Halfords don't have a black primer, just the matt black.
Also, The Range have Hycote matt black for a fiver (400ml), compared with £7.50 for Halfords (or £10.40 for GW).

Corvax White and Chaos Black are primers.
You're right about the rest
They're advertised as "Model Paint" and explicitly do not use the term "primer" because they're not primer. They're both literally just paint along with all their other colored sprays. They used to have primer back when the cans had the red circle Monster-looking face back in the 90's. However, since then, they've marketed it as strictly "paint". People just call it 'primer' because they use it in place of actual primer and that the black is mentioned as acting as a basecoat.
Rather, that's the way the sprays are in the US. In the UK, they may be different.

I swear by Hycote Matt Black auto-primer. Never had anything less than a perfectly smooth finish with it, any flaws have been me not noticing dust/debris on a piece before spraying. I've used Krylon and Army Painter, but Hycote has them beat in terms of consistent quality. Can usually pick it up for £4.50 - £6.00, too.

The Halfords one is great. For larger models, just do a continuous, sweeping spray. For smaller ones, do short bursts. The initial results before drying can be misleading, however.

I've had great results with Plasti-kote Super matt black - both the regular paint and the primer - and decent results with Halfords primer. I've tried other brands that offer a wider range of colour, but they didn't work out so well. Some cheapo brand from a craft shop stayed tacky; Tamiya was far too glossy; Liquitex and Montana Gold were too thick for my tastes. (I think it's a side effect of being made to stick on exterior walls come rain or shine, but anyway) It all eventually convinced me that this was the way to go:

You honestly don't need "real" primer on plastic models. Any type of paint will do.

The main advantage of the GW stuff was just that it matched GW paints. It's not hard to find coloured sprays, it's hard to find ones that exactly match a pot of acrylic paint that you can then follow up with. The main problem I have with airbrush primers is that the ones that I like are not something I want to be breathing in. Granted, I also don't want to be breathing in the rattle can stuff, but the rattle can stuff I can easily take outside and give it a spurt which is not as easy to do with my airbrush.

Yeah, it's news that GW are no longer producing coloured primers.
Though I'm pretty sure the main sprays (white, black and varnish) are staying. I'd be surprised if GW are getting out of the spray-game entirely. Unfortunately GW never announce anything so we'll only find out when we can no longer buy them
I feel sorry for the people who are still attached to their black primer and haven't ventured out in to bigger and better things (unless they collect an army that is predominantly black of course ).

Well, this isn't even (true) news. They just made the Retributor Gold spray a couple months ago along with the Sigmar release, so it's not like GW is out of the business of making color-matched basecoat paints. If I were to guess, they contract it out, have a bunch made as a run, and that's it, no more. The real change to the line is the switch from skull white to corax white, which is actually a really nice primer. I looked a model primed in it, and if I were a rattle-can priming sorta guy, I would definitely buy Corax White. It's slightly offwhite, goes on (way) thinner, and looks really sharp. But it's not going to beat out an airbrush any day soon. Plus the cost is astronomical compared to an airbrush, though in fairness, pretty much every rattle can solution is, relatively speaking.

Well the OP only stated "The Fang spray...those spray cans..." without ever stating what :those" spray cans were, so it's a bit harsh to state it's not true news because it does seem like those ones are going. Check the various GW websites and a lot of those sprays are either missing or listed as "SOLD OUT, No Longer Available". It's not that the OP news wasn't true, it's more that people got off topic and started talking about sprays in general from other companies and whatnot. It's both news (to people who want or were using those sprays) and it's true (though we never know to what extent because GW never announces anything, we only find out when we go to buy it and it's not there).

I only know about the Fang as that's the one I have been trying to find.
I assume it's the same colours that came out together. Which was the red (mephiston) and green (no idea). Perhaps macragge blue as well.....
Sorry if this wasn't really news or rumour to anyone but it seemed it to me. Especially now that I've spoken to a GW shop manager and he avoided saying whether "they" we're going or not and simply stated that there was none in stock due to a logistics mistake.
I can't however stop the thread from going off on one about how to beat undercoat your models!
