I think it also may be that people don't realize that there isn't really such a thing as a "free" press in the country anymore. All of them are owned by massive corporations (many of which, in turn, are owned by 1 guy) and thus have a vested interest in spinning the story in such a way that continues to garner them eyeballs on screen/page and distract you from other things going on.

Yellow Journalism has been around since the 19th century. We still have a free press, we still have a privately owned press, we still have a capitalist economy.

On the one hand, we have the right-wing lie-o-sphere, which is repeatedly willing to make gak up because lol, why not? and on the other hand we have CNN, who are an embarrassment to journalism. Who are you supposed to trust?
It's like something out of Saw.
Could you by any chance keep your raging hatred for anything conservative in check a little bit? From your post you make it sound like only Right wing/conservatives lie or spin things. It would be nice for a more neutral tone
Hah, spare me your outraged sensibilities. We literally have a big brouhaha going right now over yet another batch of doctored tapes, which are the latest in a string over doctored tapes aimed directly at the right wing lie machine who unflinchingly take them as gospel. You have the second or third place GOP candidate literally repeating things that never happened on said fraudelent tapes as if they were true. Conservatives no longer get to play the victim when their BS stories get a presumption of fraud... this is the bed Jimmy O'Keefe and Breitbart have wrought, and Fox News has propagated.
Does the left wing front weak stories, and sometimes untrue ones? Sure. The difference is, when it happens on the left wing, it gets retracted and sometimes the guys behind it lose their jobs. Dan Rather lost his job, and his career was in ruins. Brian Williams was suspended for 7 months or so. And so on, and so forth. That doesn't happen on the right side of the camp - look at Bill O'Reilly. Even Whembly will admit that's true, I bet - the right wing media as of relatively late simply has a casual disconcern with the truth.

Is the press really free when all it's doing is serving as the mouthpiece for massive media corporations?
It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
All the term "free press" was created to embody was the idea of a press media independent of government control.
I think you're barking up the wrong tree trying to play word games with the phrase Mass media has always been a business dominated by a small number of individuals/groups. I doubt it could exist otherwise, simply because of the costs of its infrastructure.

It isn't epic trolling. It's the media spreading utter lies to push a narrative. Exactly the thing you were wanting to complain about. It's just that the lie was from a crazy fringe, picked up by the rightwing outrage press, and the narrative was about CNN trying to push some kind of anti-white people story.

Because in the end cable news is a for profit business and they are not in the business of reporting news, they are in the business of running commercials. And bias = viewers, and viewers = ratings.
This is a brilliant way of expressing how it really works. They'll shovel whatever gak the audience has an appetite for, because all they care about is ratings.

Yes, it's free. It doesn't mean it's perfect, but it is literally free.
I really think you're barking up the wrong tree here. It isn't freedom that's the problem, but a lack of responsibility, both in the institutions, and the audience who is all too willing to believe lies when the stories match their pre-existing biases.

The source was from a Twitter user @0Hour1. @0Hour1 is an epic troll for trolling the right-wing media, not AJ or his website. Had AJ created the picture it then you would be correct but AJ, whatever else he might be or do, didn't create the picture nor did he alter it.

You could have 'socialist' media like the BBC. Not that that is free of bias, but it has always built all its infrastructure without resort to private ownerships. That's why private companies like News International are always moaning about competition and trying to get the BBC shut down.
Isn't Fox owned by Rupert Murdoch/News International?

Indeed it is.
And ABC is owned by GE. And?

It got picked up and carried by right wing media outlets. Minor outlets to be sure, but carried by them all the same.
And that's a major part of how this kind of bias works. Dodgy stories get produced and repeated, and these stories are swallowed by an audience (either people or other media outlets) who want to believe they are true, who find those stories fit with their pre-existing beliefs. With the combined impact of the internet and FOX's business model now dominating media, what we see is media outlets and people collecting in lots of little like minded groups, where they have a great time working only with stories that support their pre-existing beliefs, while ignoring stories that counter their beliefs, or even getting together to convince each other of why those stories are wrong.

Kabletown ruined NBC, it was never the same once it left the careful stewardship of the Sheinhardt Wig Company.

As a note, the same can be said for the left, anytime a random story pops up (true or not) about something that supports the left's policies/opinions, it gets carried by numerous media outlets, neither left nor right is innocent. Kind of happy I sit in the middle

I do note CNN seems to have shifted from "constant left" to "left with a focus on wall to wall coverage of the latest killing or plane crash." I find I watch Al Jazzeera a whole lot more now. CNN has become like the local it leads it bleeds TV news.

I have absolutely no idea what CNN is doing anymore. I don't think you can really even ascribe a bias to their reporting, it's mostly confused nonsense now it seems.
I don't know when this started, exactly - I do remember a point when CNN was pretty good, but that was a long time ago. The last time I saw it on a TV in the break room, they had a live twitter crawl at the bottom of their feed, and were reading twitter comments. On the news. I have no idea what value they were adding to that; I feel like I could go onto twitter and take a dipperful from the crapstream just fine on my own without Wolf Blitzer's dulcet intonations.

This is true. But if you take away Trump and the latest headline-hopefully a shooting or more evilz cop oppressionz -and there's not a lot there.
Fox continues to be its sensationalist right focused, with "lets create a mountain out of a molehill" coverage. Its straight news is good but I usually can't stand to deal with the rest of it to watch it. Their business coverage just makes me want to put on a Sandanista bandanna and grab and AK...
AJ is great but man its in your face. They don't filter what they are showing and sometimes its like...wo back to happy news before I off myself! time.

There you are, then.
This thread probably should be re-titled Right Wing Media Bias on Display.

The problem with constant news is twofold.
Firstly, there isn't 'real' news happening all the time, so if you want to fill dead air you have to cover whatever insignificant rubbish is happening at the time. (In the good old days, the BBS news announcer would simply announce there was no news today, so instead here is a programme of light music. That was before WW2 of course, when radio presenters wore evening dress.)
The second problem is that even when there is 'news' it can't be made sense of by observing the events unfolding. The Twitter stream of the Umphwa mass murder was very dramatic, but it did not give any of the important facts about who did it, where they came from, how many guns they had and so on. You have to wait for all the facts to emerge before you can get perspective and think about what has happened. This usually takes at least a day, or longer.
However all 24 hour news channels rely on constant coverage to justify selling space to advertisers. Except the BBC Parliament channel. That is there for insomniacs.
