Honestly, I don't think the Revenant was an Oscar winning performance (for best actor, but the cinematography was great).
I do think he's an Oscar-caliber actor, though - I thought he was amazing in The Aviator. I think it was just bad luck he went up against Million Dollar Baby that year.

On the fence on if that really was an Oscar performance, but he damn well deserved one. No Oscar for Wolf on Wall Street was a disgrace. To be fair though, it does take quite some skills to perform well in a movie with little to no interpersonal interaction as you have to act everything out on your own instead of getting cues from others.

The oscars are 100% manufactured. Its all money exchanging hands and deciding who wins what. Im honestly surprised people take it seriously.

I thought both those movies deserved the award personally. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ouze wrote:Honestly, I don't think the Revenant was an Oscar winning performance (for best actor, but the cinematography was great).

Possibly. But even if Foxx was a pain to work with, Christian Bale gets prestige movies pretty regularly anyway. Automatically Appended Next Post:
That was in the late 90s, before Foxx had established himself as a-list. At a similar stage in his career DiCaprio made The Man in the Iron Mask.
And that's basically the point. Every actor takes what they can get, looking to prove their talent and establish their name. This means every actor will be in some terrible movies, and sometimes have terrible roles in terrible movies. The actors who are good enough, and who land the right roles, will get to a point where they can make the films they want to make. If they're white. Or Will Smith.
But Foxx doesn't, despite being very gifted, and having starred in films like Ray, Django and Collateral. This means he is still taking what roles he can get, which is sometimes Django, and sometimes White House Down. Yeah, it isn't just about how good your performance was, it's also about who you're up against. This wasn't DiCaprio's best role, but the field was pretty weak. His previous losses were to Foxx for Ray, and Forest Whitaker for Last King of Scotland - hard to begrudge those guys their wins.
And there's that element of 'being due'. When it's a marginal selection, it'll break for the guy who has built a field of work that deserves selection.

To be fair, Ray was a pretty bland oscar-bait.

You forgot Samuel L. Jackson. Though to be fair, he's kind of an "acting slut" in that his agent will call him up and say, "Hey Sam, I found a part I think..." ---- "I'll Take it." --- "But, I didn't say what the part was!" ---- "I said, I'll take it Mutha fether!"
Also, I haven't seen the Revenant, but I have seen his acceptance speech, and while it may or may not have been his best role (again, I haven't seen it) perhaps someone in the Academy knew what his "soap box" speech would be about and made the call?
Also also, wasn't Gangs of New York released somewhat around the same timeframe as his Man in the Iron Mask? GoNY is one of my favorite movies, and while I'm not surprised he didn't win an award for it, he really had a cast around him that he should have been able to learn a bit from (Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson, etc)

ennio morricone Finally won. There are few musical scores as memorable to me as "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly". I'm an old feth, but I put it up there with Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, and Dirty Dancing.

I think DiCaprio's Oscar was very much an "it's about damn time" Oscar, much like Denzel's for training day. They've both been much better on other roles, but they were more than good enough in the roles they won for but it wasn't their best work.
I also think Eddie Redmayne (the guy is just incredible) should have won and, despite really liking Damon, don't think he should have been nominated.
I also think Inside Out should have been nominated for best picture over Fury Road.

I think Samuel L Jackson is a lot like Michael Caine, these guys have led real lives. They’re not going to get caught up in ideas of artistic integrity, they’re going to take work and have fun doing it.

Really? I was so disappointed by Gangs of New York. I loved the book (it’s non-fiction), and here they had a top end cast in a Martin Scorsese film. And then the movie was just so… okay. Daniel Day Lewis was amazing, but the rest of the cast weren’t really able to bring anything to their roles, even guys like John C Reilly and Brendan Gleeson who are so consistently excellent in big and small roles. I don’t know, I feel like the film got swamped by the scope of the story. Showing the crime of the five points to the corruption of Tammany Hall to the draft riots, so much rich history, and it never really came together.

I like gangs, and I actually agree.
The story would have been better served as a John Adams style mini series. Can you imagine?

Agreed. It's iconic, and I'm not old as feth.
