Ever considered that all this was manufactured controversy by the Academy to keep the oscars being watched?
From the very nomination process, it was all masterfully produced.
Who better to host than the tiresome, divisive, angry black comedian
Chris Rock knew what he was going to say. The academy knew what he was going to say ( he has to rehearse it somewhere...someone at the academy has to build the show around his monologues, etc).
It wasn't off the cuff, improv, or extemperaneous.
It was written, rehearsed, and highly polished.
Just like all the lame skits...they weren't done live.
They were produced and written with a deliberate and intended goal.
And all within about a month's time...yes? That's a damn quick turnaround if you ask me.
This is Hollywood, after all..masters at creating make believe movies and tv shows....
Think about that for a second.
I watched the "mop" skit and a little Silverman..could not stand the crass, classless humor they were shoveling.Sex and Bond's schlong....it was gutter humor at its worst and not what I would have expected. There is a time and place for that kind of stuff, and an awards ceremony to honor people isn't one, in my view.

Was the controversy manufactured? No. The academy is made up of hundreds of separate voters who all have their opinions. The Academy didn't know for sure how they would vote. Also, this isn't exactly the first year there has been no African American nominees. How would it know this would be the year of the outcry?
Was the show manufactured? Of course it was. It is a show. There is always a script for these things for the hosts.would you really want the whole thing to be improv? What a (more of a mess) that would be.

I never understood why it was mandatory that black people be nominated. It was my understanding that equality meant that everyone had the same chance of work, but the Oscars isn't a job it's an award ceremony. Was Will Smith's wife annoyed or something that he wasn't nominated or something?
I guess I should be thankful that Leo finally won an Oscar.

Umm, for all the many, many failings of the Academy, they've always been pretty good at giving the hosting talent pretty much free reign to make whatever commentary they want up on stage. They've actually got writers back stage during the show, providing new lines to hosts and speakers based on the events of the night so far. Do you remember when Michael Moore got booed for giving his speech? Later in the night Steve Martin cracked 'teamsters are helping Michael Moore in to the trunk of his limo'.
That was written on the fly. A lot of the material is, in order to respond to what's happened during the night. You can't do that if things are stage managed and controlled by secretive background manipulators who are chasing ratings.
Also, Chris Rock is divisive? He talks about issues of race, but I don't think that's enough be labelled divisive. Automatically Appended Next Post: Frozocrone wrote:I never understood why it was mandatory that black people be nominated. No-one has said black nominations are mandatory. I don’t know where you’re getting that from. People have said there were black performances this year that deserved nominations, and didn’t get them. Just from a stats point of view It’s a weak argument, really – if we look at just the primary awards, there’s four acting awards and best director. 30 nominations. If 10% of the population is black, they’ll pick up 3 nominations on average, but even with no racism 0 award nominations will happen from time to time, just as a matter of probability distribution.
Really, the whole thing needs to touch on the greater race issue in Hollywood. As Chris Rock points out, DiCaprio gets a great role every year. Jamie Foxx shows he’s just as gifted in roles like Ray, but he doesn’t get offered great roles year on year like DiCaprio. There’s a weird kind of racism where producers get skittish about making a movie a ‘black film’ if the lead and anyone else in it is black.
It’s the same weirdness that means Will Smith keeps getting cast opposite Eva Mendes. Because they worry if Smith is cast opposite a black lady the film will look too black, but they also worry that people will freak out if it’s black man with a white women. So Eva Mendes is this weird kind of compromise. Seriously, in this century this is still happening.
Was Will Smith's wife annoyed or something that he wasn't nominated or something?
Pretty much. Chris Rock’s take on Pinkett-Smith was gold, I’m paraphrasing but it was something like ‘her boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting a Rihanna party – I wasn’t invited’.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something. |

I don't know Jamie Foxx from Adam, but maybe he is a lot like Christian Bale, a pain in the ass to work with?

With all the stuff going on the world that actually is important, any controversy over something trivial like the Oscars is going to be manufactured. It is just a silly contest. Haven't people got better things to be concerned about?

Strictly the highbrow stuff like Critters 3.
On a side note, I loved Cate Blanchett's dress.

I hear Leo won. I'm kind of surprised. I don't really think he's a very good actor on his own--Inception was pretty much two hours of Leo getting upstaged by anyone he shared a scene with--but he clearly has the connections to land oscar bait role after role with top notch directors who get the performances they want, which would make anyone look good.
