That's not list tailoring in the slightest.
So if I only ever play against Horde Nids, I should still take melta and Lascannon Devastators because its list tailoring if I do 4x Heavy Bolters? No. Like I said, List Tailoring is looking at your opponent's list and directly changing your to counter his perfectly.

Additionally if you have a very small circle of opponents than it's natural for it to happen. If I know all my friends play marines and nothing else, that is eventually color my choices.
Grav cents with hurricane bolters isn't, but listing for Orks/Necrons is.

Again, if those are the only two armies your every going to face then it's natural to look for options that are good against those two armies. Not all of us have gaming groups that are diverse.

Saying something taking heavy bolters over lascannons when facing armies which focus on numbers over high toughness targets is list tailoring is absolutely insane. It's like saying a player of Orks taking lots of boyz versus a Marine player is list tailoring.
That's what army options exist for. If you can't take things to counter what they are made to counter without being guilty of list tailoring, we might as well randomly roll for them. You're still going in blind against what they might bring within that army. Bank only on facing lots of boyz and end up facing dreads and vehicles, you've been fairly screwed by your poor planning in not taking a balanced list.

Wasn't trying to list tailor, just trying to look at my best option for the game. Secondly, can they take a drop pod as a dedicated transport? It says they can only take land raiders, but I've seen some people use them in a drop pod.

You can take a Drop Pod as a pure Fast Attack option (the same way Land Raiders can be taken solo), and then put any unit in it.

Thanks for the help.
Don't list tailor.
That's not tailoring. Tailor is looking at your opponents ork list, seeing he's taking a DreadHead style list, taking out all your heavy bolters and swapping them for Lascannons.
This is just being smart. TAC lists focus on Marine killing more than other armies as they are most common so chances are in a completely unknown environment you'll see Marines. But this isn't an unknown environment, he mostly plays against Crons and Orks so its a good idea to think about what kills them best.
You mean, tailor you list for orks and crons instead of an all-comers list?
Thank you for proving me right.

again though it doesn't make sense to take an all comers list if your gaming group consists of two army types. If i'm only everRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrr going to play against either orks or necrons it'
s only natural to take options that play well against both. Just as I would expect someone to stop taking flamers if all I play is space marines.
list tailoring is knowing what specific things from that faction is going to be on the table and changing what i'm bringing. bringing a list that is good against my only opponent is not.

That's the definition of list tailoring, but whatever.

I think with this level of cheese going around, list tailoring might be the only way to balance certain OP lists.
I know own for sure that when I see 6+ IG tanks with ignores cover ordinance, I'm gonna proxy all my plasma for melta, and not feel bad about it.

Not if you have to determine your list before your opponent. You shouldn't get to switch out your weapons at the last minute. Make the hard choices up front.

Don't list tailor against Orks, its not fun for anybody. Stick with the Grav + whatever else loadout. There are plenty of things to use grav on against Orks like their vehicles, meganobz, bikers, etc. If your shooting at 6+ armor boyz then be happy that all the bolters your tac marines carry around are useful instead of just being wound shields for your special weapon guys.

Unfortunately, given any cover, bolters effectiveness against Orks is rather dubious. Tac marines with boltguns are especially bad against Orks, imo, as they are unlikely to earn their points back before they get stomped in CC.

Our gaming group is pretty generous with house rulings, and most of the players admit using broken lists and will encourage tailoring to make it a better game for both players.
My point was, if both parties agree, tailoring isn't such a big evil. In some cases it is necessary to have anot enjoyable game if you weren't ready for flyer spam, av14 spam, or some gargantuan super heavy in your friendly games.

Not tailoring is what makes flyer spam, AV 14 spam, etc viable. AV 14 is useless if people know it's coming.
