Subject: Which Chaos Space Marine Legion is your favourite, and why ?
Slayer le boucher wrote: "Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium.
He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds.
The World Eaters were not that weapon.
We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen.
We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted.
The Wolves obey, when we would not.
The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could.
They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves.
They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim.
But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
- Eight Captain Khârn, from his unpublished treatise The Eighteen Legions
Pretty much this. I was drawn first to Chaos, then to World Eaters, then specifically to Kharn. Khorne is alright as a patron god, too, but it's really the World Eaters themselves I like; I even play my Daemonkin as a small group that still fights under the World Eaters name. And with the Horus Heresy Black Library series, it's only grown. Angron is such a tragic character, fighting because it's all he knows, freedom his only wish, taken from him by his enslavers, then the Emperor, and finally, when he thought he had it, by Lorgar as he ascended to become a Daemon Prince, forever bound to the whim of Khorne for all eternity.

1) Thousand Sons for all the normal reasons: amazing fluff, cool psykers, etc. Also, as we all know: not actually a traitor legion
2) Death Guard: tragic story, the ONLY primarch who Horus still trusted by the end, and even then Mortarion was swayed by half-truths and lies and disgusted with the traitor use of magicks, AND according to older WD fluff he was planning on popping out of the warp and gunning down the traitor fleet until that dick Typhus did his shtick.
I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

I like Thousand Sons as a legion, but I've never collected any as I'm not a huge fan of their current models, or rather the upgrade sprue needed to make them. The sorcerer model is nice, but I'd prefer a new kit for the unit, and some new options to make them less boring rules-wise wouldn't go amiss either. In other words, I want them to feel like a legion rather than being the CSM equivalent of Legion of the Damned (who coincidentally have awesome models that I love).
That said my small Chaos force is actually aligned with Be'Lakor, so not a legion at all.
Word Bearers, it is the story of the weakest growing to be the strongest. Lorgar was the orchestrator of it all. Dared to break away when all he knew and believed was told wrong. He planned, plotted, sought his own path, and patiently made all things come to fruition. It is a great story in its own right, the weakest of them all rising and taking long long steps to formulate his own path and cause it all. Right or wrong, his story is something incredible.
Without the word bearers there would be no Horus Heresy. There would be no Horus Turn, there would be no Scattering of the Primarchs (Argal Tal, causes it with the Red Blades). (If you hate Lorgar read "First Heretic". If you have read it and still hate, read it again.) HINT: BTW the title is not referring to the Word Bearers or Lorgar...
Lorgar grows to be one of the most powerful. After he gets nearly killed by Corax (First Heretic), he takes steps never to be the under dog again. He is the only one who can truly contain Angron, Beat down Fulgrim and Perturabo in the same scene. And when Horus tried to quell him, he psychicly forced Horus to remove his hand and sit down. At that moment, even Magnus was taken back at the site of Lorgars power.
Night lords Are awesome, because of the Pirates thing, but also because none of them gave into Chaos. They looked upon Those infested with disgust (First Heretic, and some other book where Sevetar basically told Argul tal he was a disgusting mutant and stay away from him and his legion, i think that is in Betrayer)
But one of the best books to tell the story of just how dangerous the Night Haunter is, is " Unremembered Empire". To truly appreciate Konrad Kurze, read that book.
Alpha Legion, are truly on the edge of the knife. But in everybook they have been in, you can tell they are controlled by no one, Not the Emperor, Not Horus, and not the Cabal. They clearly have there own agenda. And the books keep them on the edge, to keep the rumors of being traitors or loyalist both possibly outcomes.
1000 Sons, I mean cmon Ahriman. Magnus? Poor Magnus tried to warn Lorgar, Horus, and the Emperor long before actions they were going to take would lead to some sort of fall or tragedy. No one listened to him. He was the only one to see what was going to happen, yet ultimately failed to stop it. He has a sad story compared to the others (He has a great scene after the battle with Space Wolves, in the book "Scars", when he talks with The Great Khan and lets it all out.
Scars, I recently read Scars and have a whole new appreciation for them. While the Scars are most affiliated with being histories Mongolian Hordes. Jaghatai Khan shows great intuition to not only have the patience and mentality to decipher the truth of what is going on (Scars takes place after dropsite, after Prosperos War, and before unremembered empire). His actions stopped him from making a mistake, un knowingly throwing in with the traitors, and most of all, quelled the rebellion brewing in his own legion.
World Eaters, how can you not like Angron? Kharn?
Fav, for me in order.
1) Word Bearers
2) White Scars
3) 1000 Sons
4) World Eaters
5) Night Lords
6) Alpha Legion (They only fall to number 6, because of the lack of individualism. Coincidentally, that same fact of all beings "Alpharius", puts them in the top picks)
In all my years of movies and books, I always routed for the Good. Frodo, Luke Skywalker, Gi Joe. I always played the Good rolls in D&D, I always played the good races and forces of good in Video Games.
But when it comes to the Horus Heresy and 30k/40k universe. I cant help but side with the "traitors". But to me the emperor is a tyrant and the actual bad guy. Making Deals with the forces of Chaos, destroying planets and people who do not side with him. And being a bad father.

Whoa ! That was an awesome break down. I have not read past the first 3 heresy books ( I just seem to like the 40k characters and events more , and dont see myself continuing the series so no spoilers taken ) , however your insights make for a very good picture . It seems clear that not everything is as it seems.
I will admit, though I started the hobby with a loyalist army of Space Wolves, I quickly became taken by Chaos ( Death Guard in this case ) . Despite my initial reasons for switching to the Spikey Boys being purely they seemed " Cooler " to my teenage self , as I got older I began to love the Traitors more .
At first, the reason was learning about just how strong armed the Emperor is. Dont comply ? I'll destroy your entire planet. Don't give up Tithes despite being poor ? Ill declare you traitors and blow up your planet.
I remember when i found out that the Grey Knights execute any mortal who has seen a Daemon... It made me twitch. I mean just imagine you're a guards man, drafted against your will as is often the case, fighting a horrific ordeal against the single most horrifying beings you've ever seen and you somehow manage to survive it. Blood sweat and loyal tears. Then right at the end a giant Space marine rolls up and goes... " Nah sorry dude, you've seen too much " POP ! Turns you into scrap.
It was explained to me by a friend that largely the reason they do this is because a lot of them are gibbering messes who have lost their sanity in the fight, and also in part that they fear those who know of such a terrible powers existence run the risk of worshipping them and sewing massively destructive seeds in the future, however it still just made me twitch.
Furthermore, once I read the first book in the Soul Drinkers series and saw ***SHOULDN"T be any spoilers in this*** how badly they got screwed over and declared traitors for , in my eyes, doing nothing but defending their Honour ( and themselves ) against an incident from a supposed ally , it has shaken my faith even more so !
Anyone who has read the first book should understand this metaphor..... But that first book made me think this ( as i explained to someone who is adamant they are traitors ((Biased opinion )) ) :
" Imagine someone else steals your car and when you threaten them they become openly aggressive. Then the police arrive and arrest YOU. Wouldn't you be pissed ??? "

- Horus was the only primarch ever to fully realize his potential. He went and achieved god like power on par with the emperor all on his lonesome. Without giving in to daemonhood. So I consider him to be the most powerful primarch of them all.
- The word Bearers may have started the heresy, but by all that is unholy, the Black Legion will finish it.
- People say they are an epic failure. These guys have picked a fight with the entirety of the imperium and have been fighting them for ten thousand years...alone *. Despite fighting such a long war with limited access to resources, they are somehow the largest of the traitor legions by an order of magnitude. They must be doing something right. Not to mention that Abaddon has not only survived 12 black crusades but has gotten stronger after each one. Talk about playing the long game!
- They are the only legion to reject their primarch for being a failure and taking vengeance and bitterness to whole new level. They want to burn an entire Galaxy to the ground not for the sake of it or because some god wants it so, but out of sheer hatred.
- All other primarchs have ascended to daemonhood and are hence bound to the warp or dead. Abaddon is the only one alive and kicking as a mortal(ish) in the real world. And who knows with alpharius/omegon lol.
*The other legions help during a black crusade, but after that they return to doing their thing, while the Black Legion are left to fight the imperium on their own. The others might cross paths and end up fighting the imperium but that's random. The Black Legion will actively seek them out. An enemy that outnumbers them so vastly in all regards it's not even a contest. And yet they grow in strength.
Though I would like to hear your take on Black Legion Tsilber. Kinda enjoyed your post ^^

My pleasure,
I liked them as the Sons of Horus. I loved their circle, the way Horus was humble and showed great council to the Captains.
But when time came, it seems Horus was easily played. I think he should of had a brighter perspective of the what-abouts, and at least some better comprehension and deduction skills.
Magnus and Lorgar, both realize Chaos the moment they saw it. Lorgar and Magnus, are only Daemons because they didn't need it for some sort of justification or Cure per say, they were so pure in their Deed to their beliefs, theirs were truly gifts if you ask me. (Mortation for ego, Fulgrim for vanity and greed, Perturabo because he's emo/jealousy, And sadly Angron because he was going to die anyway. Refference Books : Fulgrim, Nemesis, Angel Extermantus, and Betrayer.) Not to harp on Lorgar, obviously he is my favorite. But his beliefs and Conviction were so strong, that even when all he knew was told wrong by the one he thought to be the "One" (First Heretice), he was bent, but not broken and sought out the Primordial Creator, to him Chaos is the Good, the Gods per say, and his faith and devotion to higher purpose and stay the coarse when all were seemingly against him, was pretty admirable.
SPOILER
Horus was so Awesome for so long, but when the fall happened it happened way to fast. He was flat out played and a puppet. Though recently, my respect and admiration for him has returned. There is a wonderful graphic audio that came out of Horus, long into the Heresy, sees all things accurately. He sees the coarse and steps that have lead to that point for what they are. He acknowledges he was fooled. He is talking to an "item" (a significant item, but I wont spoil it). He speaks about how he is surrounded by the broken and the damaged , He mentions Perturabo, Konrad, Angron, and Fulgrim all by name. He makes a declaration that had he had Guillaman or the Khan he would easily take Terra.
But what he does next is mention Little Horus, Abaddon, and a few others. Talks about that even though he sees the challenge ahead, and sees he might have been tricked into the coarse of action, he still reflects he would probably stayed the coarse anyway. Besides Lorgar, Horus is the only one to defect (or stay defected) from the Emperor due to the Emperors actions against him. I like his defiance. Angron, was always angry but only turned when enticed. Fulgrim the same, Perturabo because Lorgar played at his heart strings, Konrad because he is just a psycho path anyway. Mortarion because of his friendship with Horus.
Now as for the Black legion. I admit I dont know much except what is written in the CSM book, and parts of whats in the new Black legion Supplement. But Abaddon still wandering around is pretty awesome. Never giving up, following the path. I even liked when he blatantly disrespected Alpharius, though Alpharius kinda didnt stand for it, Abaddon didn't back down (Deliverance). Gotta admire his determination. Though he has got to find Kharn a suit of friggin Artificer armor.. I mean 10k years you cant find your boy a suit of artificer Armor, an iron halo? Something...

My great favourites are the Alpha Legion and the Iron Warriors. It comes to a contest between those two, I'd go with Iron Warriors over Alpha Legion. The Alpha Legion may be really cool on the surface, but their fluff is not so deep and interesting as that of the Iron Warriors. I just love the tragic history of Perturabo and his sons. Iron Within, Iron Without!
Third place goes to the Thousand Sons, who like the Iron Warriors have interesting and deep fluff (and tragedy, tragedy is important in stories, especially when dealing with fallen heroes such as the traitor legions). Magnus being such a slowed douchebag prevents them from getting second or even first place however.
Fourth place goes to the Deathguard, mostly for their aesthetics.
Fifth place goes to Sons of Horus for combining great aesthetics with great fluff.
Word Bearers get sixth place, but really it should be more of a shared fifth place. I like their religious theme.
Seventh goes to Emperor's Children. Great aesthethics, poor fluff.
Eight to World Eaters for meh aesthetics and okay fluff.
Ninth to Night Lords who despite their great aethethics suffer from some fluff writing that is more horrible than their way of warfare.

Not a legion, but my favorite Chaos Space Marine group is 100% the Purge. Their "fall to Chaos" just makes the most sense to me. In a universe where everything is horrible, mind-bogglingly so, they just snapped and said, "We must purge it all. All life." They aren't mindless killers, they aren't controlled by rage or hate, they have just lost all belief in the purpose and value of life in the 41st millennium. Space Marines are so zealous that it does seem natural that when they do finally snap, they snap all the way.
Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

They don't count as a Legion, but my favourite Warband is the Crimson Slaughter. I know they aren't massively popular, but I really like them. Kranon and his slow fall into guilt ridden insanity.
My favourite Legion if I was to pick though is definitely Thousand Sons. I love Tzeench (lucky Crimson Slaughter are "sorta" Tzeench).

ruining fun incoming!
1) kinda true: he was essentially a daemon without the lasting power. the chaos gods could have removed his boons any time they wanted (and did at one point in the fluff before they retconned it, IIRC)
2) Black legion ain't a legion, it's the fractured remains of the failure that was the sons of horus
3) "alone" with the support of traitor guardsmen, other legions, new traitor marines, the eldar, tau, necrons, 'nids, and orcs all eating imperial attention. they sure all doing it all 'Alone' all right 4) They never once rejected their primarch, and I wanna know where this came from in truth. Their primarch was literally erased from the universe, he wasn't shunned.
5) Abby isn't a primarch, and he is still chaos's bed buddy. AS if he is somehow immune to getting all of his special powers taken away if he pissed the chaos gods off enough. as to the second half: Magnus basically refuses to help tzeentch (point in case: the only TS we see now-a-days are exiles), Angron kicked the crap out of armageddon (was stopped by Mary Sues), Mortarion lead one of the largest, most damaging 'crusades' and was stopped by the head honcho of Mary Sues, Alpharius goes where he pleases. Most daemon primarchs didn't go to chaos so willingly, so their inaction could be an extention of that.
The black legion are arguably the biggest failure of a legion, who ride on the coat-tails of Horus's legasy and Abby's ability to do the same to gain power. they've fought 13 'great evil crusades' and yet without the help of recent ret-cons to make them more spooky, they have done feth-all to actually damage much beyond Cadia and a few near-by systems. They are to chaos space marines as the UM are to regular marines: the 'poster boy' and successful by virtue of being on the cover of the box. The only legions worse than the sons of horus are word bearers (for being dicks all the time, though this mostly falls on erebus's shoulders, the ponce) and Dark Angels (hypocritical, team killing, legion-building traitors)

For me it has to be the Thousand Sons. This relentless phalanx of suits that when blown to pieces, reform wordlessly, or deflect blasts with magic. Meanwhile their sorcerers become this cabal of dark magic users, giving them almost unlimited trickery in their fluff.

Kinda enjoyed your post ^^
ruining fun incoming!
2.The Black Legion is at it's core, Sons of Horus. Though I suspect that of the Black Legion overall, they only make up a fraction of the numbers. Still, it started with only members of the Sons of Horus.
4. They did though. After Abaddon came back from being all mopey in the warp only to see fabulous bill make off with the corpse of Horus, he went back to look at the tales of horus. Only now, where before there was pride, he felt only hatred and contempt. Blaming Horus for the fall of the sons of Horus. He then went on to destroy the clones of horus, including the one that had intact memories to truly sever all ties. Painting their armour black and becoming the Black Legion to erase even his name
5. I didn't say that he was a primarch, though is the next best thing. And given the nature of daemonhood, he is the only one able and/or willing to constantly fight the imperium. Angron might be more dangerous, but he only gets out every one hundred years or so and even then he doesn't care about leading an army. Abaddon has the daemon primarchs fight HIS crusades. He is the driving force behind the long war and as a result, has probably caused more destruction than any daemon primarch individually. Simply because countless raids into real space wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for him, even if he himself had little part in the actual battles.

If Im choosing a full Legion it would have to be The Word Bearers. There is just something ominus and fascinating to me about the dark side of religion, and they embody everything that could ever go wrong with that. Before reading some of their story i kinda looked down on the whole "chaos undivided" thing as a cop out. But after reading the Word Bearers omnibus i was hooked. Add that to the Horus Heresy novels and to learn that it was Lorgars faith when finding the dark gods, and his manipulations that nearly bring the imperium to the ground? Hell even Horus fell because of his plots. All because the emperor broke his faith, which lead him to find the chaos gods. Because of this My favorite Legion has to be the Word Bearers.
A second is probably Iron Warriors, I used to hate them, and still do dislike their aesthetic. But they are such spiteful pricks! I love it!
Outside of the Legions I have to say I have become a Crimson Slaughter fan over the last year. I used to think they where just a generic warband, but being haunted by the ghosts of those they butchered after being tricked by a Daemon of tzeench. Then to be slowly driven insane by the whispers of the ghosts. not to mention who doesn't like red and gold? if you don't your not a worshiper of the chaos god! lol

The thing i don't like about the crimson slaughter is how they are presented. The whole haunting shtick is pretty cool, but from reading some of the fluff (still got a lot to catch up on) they seem to be way stronger than they should be. They make them out to be super badasses, above any of the traitor legions. Least that was the vibe I was getting.
And how the feth does kranon get away with making demands to Abaddon. The only reason I could think of is that Abaddon thinks them to be mere children and got a chuckle out of his demand. But that goes against them wrecking house around the eye.

I think Crimson Slaughter is John Blanche's chaos force.
If you've seen his army as pictured in the 2nd ed codex (and the legion art/conversions diagram he did in the same codex), you'll see they look almost exactly like Crimson Slaughter, complete with ghostly screaming faces on their read armour.
Since he is more of an art guy than background guy (I believe), that might explain why their background is a little different to most other 40k stuff?

Grumblewartz wrote:Not a legion, but my favorite Chaos Space Marine group is 100% the Purge.
I will admit I had seen a very small >500pt force of The Purge done by someone at my FLGS and they grabbed me right away, especially being a Death Guard enthusiast. I didnt know that about their back story, and it really does make sense, and honestly with the constant repeating grind of chaos and corruption within the 41st millenium, honestly can't say I blame them

My favourite Legion if I was to pick though is definitely Thousand Sons. I love Tzeench (lucky Crimson Slaughter are "sorta" Tzeench).
It did suprise me a bit that Tzeentch is winning the Poll by a landslide. Not because I dislike Tzeentch, but rather I find much less of his stuff represented when I do generic chaos searches for conversion inspiration, and also because at my FLGS ive been attending for many years, I can honestly say not one single person favours Tzeentch which is absolutely crazy !

I am partial to Iron Warriors and Word Bearers. I originally, waaaaay back when, liked Night Lords (dark blue is my favorite color and I like lightning) but never painted them because I can't paint the lightning bolts. Fluffwise I like the no-nonsense approach of the Iron Warriors, and the fanatical zeal of the Word Bearers, and also I like how they instigated everything because they were rebuked by the Emperor.

Death Guard. Not only was Typhus my favorite model when I first got into 40k, but their whole faction is just cool. Especially Plague Marines, those guys are just badass.
