Depends on the job.
Join the US Military you will have all ten fingerprints taking and the pertinent data given will be booted down the road to the FBI who conducts a detailed background investigation searching for prior arrests, pending charges, juvenile proceedings and adult convictions along with other things. Results back in 48 hours. Regardless of Nationality

Only time I've ever been fingerprinted was when I came to the US, and that's coming from someone who used to live with abused children taken into care by the state as an adult male. Fingerprinting just isn't done over here, you should have seen the ruckus that kicked over the idea of British ID cards.

As Frazzled mentioned, in Texas, you have to be fingerprinted before getting your driver's license. I believe every registered state occupation (which ranges from lawyers to cosmetologists) also requires fingerprinting. It is a minimal requirement that is pretty easy to do.

I've been finger printed going into the USA and Japan. Not else, though, including two different Criminal Background Reference checks for working with children.

Dont see a problem with this. I hate UBer and Lyft. These are unregulated and unrestricted people driving me around. They dont have GPS, they dont have anything that stops them from driving me to the woods and reenacting Deliverance with me. The reason Uber & Lyft is so much cheaperis because their unregulated. Same with AirBNB

When I mean GPS I mean where they can track their car. Alot of Taxi services have positioning built into the taxi

Well, I wouldn't rely on a background check to protect yourself from that. Its safer but you still need to be aware, ESPECIALLY if its just you. I know She Who Must Be Obeyed made me drive down and pick up da goils from their Jr. Prom vs. my suggestion of Uber. After I regained consciousness from our discussion I understood her argument completely.

On the flipside I have been in cabs where the driver ranted about women in this country, how they dressed/acted etc, all the while nearly sideswapping every car on the road.

You should do, like research before you post things.

In Texas you have to have fingerprints before you can get an LTC.

Which is why I specifically said 'new' in my post You should so, like reading of the post you're responding to before you post things.

I will say, if it's required for Taxis in Texas, Uber should follow the same rules.

Your statement leads one to the conclusion there isn't a requirement now. If this was not your intent then I am sorry (that your statement didn't jive with your intent hahaha) Being Texan means never having to say you're sorry (or calm peaceful action is the best option, or reading is really important, or that we really should reconsider eating that chicken fried steak thats the size of the entire plate).

It is required by taxis in Austin. State rules for taxes revolve primarily around care and feed of the horses, and a proscription on picking up something called "DamnYakee capretbaggers."

Wait....there's a prescription now for Yankee Carpet baggers?

With or without digital fingerprints?

No fingerprints needed in the state code, just a brace of functioning Colt Peacemakers. Like I said, its kind of old...*

*I don't think there is a state code actually, but I am sure it would mention that, or at least that, to insure the public peace, no Houstonian may ever be put in the same cab as someone from Dallas.

On moon miranda.

I dont see what makes drivers so special they need to be fingerprinted, they're hardly the only people working with the public in a trusted capacity, not sure why they specifically need to be fingerprinted.

More to the point, fingerprinting is something of an overrated identification measure. Its usefulness is dramatically less impressive and functional than in TV shows and Movies, and can in many ways be called a pseudoscience, with gargantuan error rates, acknowledged even by experts in the field at levels as high as almost 50% even with relatively complete print sets.

Because if a cab driver rapes you and steals your wallet fingerprint plus identification is a good way of confirming their identity.

If you take two fingerprints at random from a driver of the cab firm you allege murdered you and a random member of the public, a match with the random member of the public is inherently less likely to be genuine than a match with the cab driver, whose identity can be cross-referenced with a variety of other information.

So why do we allow fingerprinting of taxis/CDL but not Uber/Lyft? No one cared until the latter didn't want to be treated like the former.

They are [paid through the app as far as I know. I don't believe there is any cash used, unless one wants to give the driver their tip. Or a tip. Whichever.

To be fair, Taxi regulation systems are also both absurd and arcane, not to mention incredibly corrupt in most places. For all I care they can ditch the Taxi systems designed in the early 20th century too.

That said, afaik taxi drivers arent universally fingerprinted either.

except, as I noted above, its actually not, fingerprinting has a mind blowing error rate even with complete prints and 4-7 residuals to compare against (far more than youre liable to get from a real crime scene in most cases).

If you take two fingerprints at random from a driver of the cab firm you allege murdered you and a random member of the public, a match with the random member of the public is inherently less likely to be genuine than a match with the cab driver, whose identity can be cross-referenced with a variety of other information.
Less likely, but given the actual state of fingerprinting science, hardly definitive, and thats assuming the specialist can make a match at all.

I actually didn't know, thus I hedged my bet with a 'new' modifier. It could mean one specifically for the city, one for the state, one for the Federal. But it really doesn't matter if one exists or not to get my point across

Regardless, Uber et al should follow the same regulations as Taxis, and really shouldn't get away with making drivers independent contractors (I do taxes, and I have to deal with people getting a nasty surprise when they come in because a business tried to claim they were independent contractors instead of employees. People don't realize what that means until it's too late.)

Whether the regulations are too onerous or not is another discussion. I don't really see the point of fingerprinting taxi drivers at all. You already have their info through the taxi service.

My fingerprinting was for a job as a substitute teacher. So yeah...working with kids.

I forgot about that. I am pretty sure I was fingerprinted for my CCW as well. If I recall and I might well not because it was a while ago and it only took a few seconds - I think it's all optical now, just put your hand on a screen or something. The whole process of getting the CCW was so fast that I don't know if I remember all the details, I know there was a background check that took a couple of minutes.

I was fingerprinted once when I was a child - the NYPD had an initiative where they had printing for kids to help maybe recover them if they got lost or abducted. My aunt was a cop so she took me. That was the old style, ink and index cards.

Sure, they fundamentally do the same thing, but what we have is a problem of the market having moved far beyond the existing regulations, and those existing regulations have much larger (and longstanding) issues that are further crippling the classic "Taxi" market, and forcing everyone to play to those rules doesn't make sense given the reality of the market in today's world.

I think there's a valid argument to be made that maybe regulations on Taxi's need to change, and this is the kind of situation for that talk.

But I don't know jack about regulations on Taxis XD
