400 points = two cannons and an engineer. That's 4 shots reroll ing 4's to hit doing d6 damage each
Hell thats three organ guns and an engineer - a possible 12d6 shots....

5.8 average wounds in two rounds of shooting before it reaches you and heals most of that back from killing crew in the next 2 rounds of combat.

A Ghorgon could take it down with good rolls and poor rolls on the side of the Mournguls saves...if you have a Rouge Idol, that could do it too Necrosphinx could as well. All dependant on who goes first if the gul has Red Fury...
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Been doing a lot of "Who would win", onviously not scientific, but the gul can really take down a lot of monsters with little problem...really comes down to you bogging it down with something that can essentially tank (because a few of my "tests" ended up taking 4+ rounds, without Red Fury mind you). Youd think monsters would be its weakpoint (cant regain wounds for models slain) but when coupled with Red Fury they are insanely good.

Monsters tend to suffer the most from hit penalties and ignore rend saves, since they tend to hit on a 4+ while counting on their rend to help get those hits through.

What do you think about giving it Master of the Black Arts for extra wounds or a 2+ save. Red Fury is the way to go imo, but how much do you think that Command Trait would help?

Incidentally, if people are concerned about the super power levels of many Forgeworld models (welcome to 40k folks!), why did Mourngul become the punching bag when stuff like Dread Maw is far, far scarier.
It has a 3+/4+ innately, and does absolutely devastating amounts of damage, while doubling as totally disruptive to deployment.

Bandwagons and echos tend to keep some things in the spotlight for longer than they should really. The mourngul I feel is a lot scarier on paper after looking into it more, which is good cause I like the model and wanted a behemoth that'd be easier to transport than a terrorghiest.
Though I'd say it's likely the unrendable 3+ save and 4+ for mortal wounds the bastiladon also enjoys that gets the two their attention. Cause that's been something some armies can really struggle with before you toss in something like mystic shield as well. While you can't stack it, thankfully, not being able to lower a 2+ save can be pretty annoying if you can't modify it nor toss out a lot of mortal wounds. Something the treelord ancient / durthu have been enjoying since the sylvaneth update.
The dread maw lacks the immunity to rending, but I think that having that second 4+ save could be more annoying over all as it has to fail that 3+ then a 4+ to take even a wound without bringing rending into it.

While no doubt powerful the dread maw isn't as good for the cost as the mourngul, or perhaps on similar ground. The mourngul heals wounds on top of its unrendable save and nerfs enemy attack rolls, meaning it is more resilient than the dread maw by a decent margin (it also gets a 6+ extra save from allegiance) and while the dread maw has nice damage output and outflank, it is very inconsistent in movement and how much damage it will do in a given round while the mourngul can fly with a reasonably good speed and does not suffer the same consistency issue.
Which is all to say that the mourngul is more op than the dread maw. But honestly this is matched play, almost all the monsters are op for the cost. The mourngul just has a shock factor since many people don't know how to deal with it initially.
