"This squad of noise marines carry a banner with a rolling stones logo on as it seemed appropriate. It counts as an Icon of Excess, giving them feel no pain for reasons unknown."
"This slaanesh raptor in white with a funky glove and chalice of blood is a corrupted apothecary, so gives feel no pain too (he counts as a raptor carrying an icon of excess)".

I imagine in a competitive environment like a tournament, most opponents would be familiar with your models. What exactly is the convention with declaring non-visible items of wargear -upgrades like melta bombs and force fields that aren't visible on a model? Then there's weapons which are visually similar (e.g. power axe and frost axe in a space wolves list) I presume these have to be declared before battle begins, for the purposes of checking points and whatnot?

Since we're playing often with proxies or unfinished models, it is normal for our gang to explain what each model is, and what it can or can't do. This way we're also avoiding any unpleasant surprises.

I line up my stuff, and point out anything non-WYSIWYG.
Apart from that, I'll explain to the n-th level if asked. I do magnetise a lot, so Wizzywig is expected.
As for WYSIWYG, my Striking Scorpion Exarch is not legal any more, as it has a pistol, and the current codex swaps that out for the claw. It is a mini-niggle, but another change they made that makes their own official models semi-illegal.

I just explain what support systems my stuff has. Tau support systems kinda arent obvious and the bits for them are unexplained clearly as to which ones are which.
"Yeah, this guy has interceptor, this one has skyfire and FNP, that guy has a shield gen and donkey pinch..." Etc etc

I go for a rundown of the following:
Model count - "20 battle sisters"
Unique weapons in the squad - "This one has a heavy flamer, this one has a flamer"
Indicate the sergeant and any special gear it has - "Here's the Superior, she has meltabombs" (this is very important for sisters, as they look very similar)
Attached characters - "Here is a Priest" (I actually will pick up the model to show my opponent, as I use conversions that are not obvious priests)
