I can for the most part, funnily enough it's the region that I was born in that I struggle in identifying most, as dialects can vary massively in that region.

Not like Americans can work us out normally anyway - they still think we're all Cockney's and pronounce butter and water like "butta and worta"

Cab this be the general pronunciation thread then?

What about Chimera? Ky-mee-rah? Or Shy-mee-rah?

Tyranids? Tie-Rah-Nids? Or Tir-Ah-Nids?

And let's not get started on all those fething Tau names...

Chimera is pronounced just like the mythical creature it's named after - ky-mee-rah

Tyranid - tir-ah-nids, as pronounced many times in 40k games and by members of GW

Tau names are usually easy due to the apostrophes separating the pronunciation for you; Shas'o = shaz-o, Shas'la = shaz-lah, Aun'shi - ow-nn-shee etc.

Yup, for me it's Leemun Roose, I guess would be the best phonetic spelling.

...Where are we getting Shy-mee-rah from? The 'ch' is the Greek letter 'chi' (written 'x' in Greek and pronounced approximately 'kh'), I've never heard it pronounced any other way.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
While we're asking more pronunciation questions, plural double 'i' as in 'Skitarii'? I'd always assumed it was '...ee-ai', but I've been told in actual Latin it's supposed to be closer to 'e-ee'.

Leh - man (as in policeman) Russ.

For those thinking Roos would be a Scandinavian pronounciation, it certainly doesn't match up with modern Norwegian. Russ is a high-school graduated hellbent on partying for three weeks in May while wearing red overalls and driving around in a custom party bus, and the "u" is a very quick and snappy "oo" sound. Russ ain't no kangaroo.

But beyond that.

Lee-man Russ with russ pronounced similar to the rus in "rust"

What more irritates me are people at my FLGS who pronounce Chimera with a Ch like from Chinook. Its not pronounced like that!!! In Chimera the CH is pronounced with a K sound

Its difficult to explain, beyond "k-imera" like the ki in "Kite"

The reason I'm writin', is how to pronounce Chitin.

My job involves tech support in the UK. It's amazing to me how quickly I started identifying regional accents. Makes me wonder if non-Americans can tell the difference in our regional accents.

You think that's bad, I used to work in a complaint department where our other two call centres were in Glasgow and Liverpool, with call staff who had the thickest accent possible. By comparison they thought we were really posh

I've noticed that the farther north you go on that little island, the harder you people are to understand . I can see Glasgow being tough, but I can usually understand calls from Liverpool just fine.

Ok. I changed the title so we can have more fun with it.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.
