Ash is a selfish prick and the hero of 3 movies and a TV series...

Han was jaded, but he was always loyal to his friends.

Released back in 1979, there were 3 Han Solo novels that covered the earlier adventures Han and Chewy, 2 years before they met Luke and get tangled with the Rebellion. I didn't discover them until the 90's, but they were a fun read. I kind of imagined this is the direction they were heading with the Han Solo movies.

This could be good. But this could also be bad. But knowing Disney they'll play it safe and we'll have Indiana Jones in space.

But maybe they'll clear up the Kessel run for those people who still argue over the parsecs bit.

I don't believe it was said that a character had to be good to have a tv show or movie. If anything the problem would be that Disney doesn't let Han be as 'bad' as he should be; Han is a smuggler and a scoundrel, after all. Removing that makes him no fun.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Your kind of missing my point, There are 3 enjoyable books where is a smuggler, and a scoundrel, while still being the central protagonist and not a douche. He's never been as 'bad' as your imagining him to be.

A) Those books have feth all to do with the movie coming out which is what this thread is about.

b) You just listed him as a smuggler and scoundrel so, yes, he is 'bad'. He is an anti-hero, not a white hat. I don't imagine him as any kind of evil, nor has that been said.

We know that Lando will be part of the Young Han Solo movie thanks to Donald Glover‘s casting, so we can expect it to show off the frenemy relationship between him and Han.

Of course, there is one other member of the entourage too, with Chewbacca set to return. Speaking to Variety, Alden Ehrenreich talked about the character who while younger, probably won’t seem that different. He said:

I can say that Chewbacca’s in the film, although I know that’s not a huge spoiler.

He’s as much younger as I am in the film. So, I think he’s like 190 — or something — years old. I don’t think there’s a huge growth spurt for him from 190 to 210, so he’s probably about the same height.

I think there is a lot of room in this spin off film to be a bunch of fun. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm, I’m sure it will be too.

So basically...Peter Mayhew stays Chewbacca? Please? I can't see anyone else voicing him.

You know Chewbacca's voice was invented by a sound engineer, right? And Peter Mayhew is in his 70s.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mayhew is already out for Episode VIII as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if whoever they get in the suit for that will do double duty in this. As mentioned, he won't be any taller/shorter in either.

Peter wasn't even in most of the chewie scenes in ep7.
He had a double for those (who did get coaching on the mannerisms from Peter). He did some of the seated scenes but most of the active scenes were done by his double.

The wookiee voice was mostly post-production (combination of seal, bear walrus and others) and Peter did his lines in English. Although in ep7, the double did do some of the vocalising - once again, lines were done in english and fixed in post with "ADR".

Wait, what? When did the fans turn on Disney?

I thought Force Awakens was well received and the buzz around Rogue One seems strong, is there a vocal backlash I am not aware of?

There was a one man backlash against TFA from me on this very forum. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, it added up to a bucket of horsegak, but that TFA backlash is definitely real and active.

In all honesty, I thought TFA was awful and Rogue One treaded water, for reasons which you can discover on my spot history, so I won't repeat the comments here.

As far as this new film goes, I expect nothing. Ever since Disney got the keys, I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm unlikely to ever see a new SW film I like.

http://icv2.com/articles/news/view/36433/woody-harrelson-han-solo-film

Woody Harrelson is in "early talks" to appear in the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If signed, he’ll play a mentor to the young Solo. Other candidates for the role included Christian Bale, according to the report.

Solo will be played by Alden Ehrenreich (see "Young Han Solo Cast"). Other members of the cast include Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian (see “’Han Solo,’ More”), and Emilia Clarke in an undisclosed role (see "'Black Panther,' 'Han Solo'").

Herrelson played the title role in Wilson, which is opening in March (see "'Wilson' Red Band Trailer").

The Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film opens May 25, 2018.

Many of the SW actors have played at least two roles in some of the movies. It's handy if one role is masked, too.

Jeremy Bulloch played Boba Fett, as well as an unnamed imperial officer who uses Leia as a human shield in ESB, and Captain of Bail Organa's ship in ep3.
Ahmed best was both Jar-Jar and a human denizen of the nightclub in ep2.

Warwick Davis and a few other little people played jawas, ewoks and ugnaughts in various movies.

Was he ever a Lead in those franchises? No . Re-using a high paid extra is a little different than Re-using a lead actor as two different lead characters within the same franchise.

My opinion anyways.

I was just trying to figure that out, Compel.

I would love to see Jim Rash as the big bad Imperial officer opposition in this film. Customs doesn't get their best after all, and a bumbling officer of a small crew opposing a small time smuggler seems like a role well within his capabilities.

Spoiler:

http://www.starwars.com/news/han-solo-smuggler-scoundrel-hero-new-star-wars-story-begins

Cameras are rolling on the adventure-filled past of the iconic scoundrel and everyone’s favorite Wookiee; principal photography on the untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story officially began February 20 at Pinewood Studios, London.

The movie will explore the duo’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directors co-piloting the movie, with a cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.

“Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous,” Lord and Miller said. “We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.”

Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, it will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, Simon Emanuel, and co-produced by Kiri Hart, Susan Towner, and Will Allegra. Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin will executive produce.

Crewing the ship will be some of the industry’s top talent, including Academy Award nominee for his work on Arrival, Bradford Young (Director of Photography), Chris Dickens (Editor), Dominic Tuohy (SFX Supervisor), Rob Bredow (VFX Supervisor) and Brad Allan (Action Designer).

They will be joining returning Star Wars veteran crew members Neal Scanlan (Creature & Droid FX Creative Supervisor), Neil Lamont (Production Designer), Dave Crossman and Glyn Dillon (Co-Costume Designers), Jamie Wilkinson (Prop Master), Lisa Tomblin (Hair), Amanda Knight (Make-Up) and Nina Gold (UK Casting Director).

The untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story is slated for release on May 25, 2018.

Punch it.

Despite having greatly enjoyed TFA and Rogue One, not to mention frothing like a maniac for TLJ, I'm still on the fence for this one...

It's the first where they're providing backstory to one of the best loved characters not just in Star Wars, but SciFi itself.

Whilst I've no doubt Disney are aware of this and capable of not stuffing it up, I'm still apprehensive.
