So If I have 10 guys... I can't take 5 with bolters and 5 with shotguns?

That you should be OK with.

The FAQ prevents you from having both a bolter and a shotgun on the same model. Mixing them in the unit is still OK.

You can, but it's not a good idea.

I put shotguns on my heavy weapon guys for overwatch or the need to move and fire. Or make sure your weapons are similarly ranged.

Wait... the only viable heavy weapon is the frag cannon which is already a beast in overwatch. Why would you use anything else?

You're capped at four in a squad. You might want something else for the last guy. And/or you might want more than five guys in a squad.

(And the Assault heavy bolter, and the heavy bolter with the Hellfire shell, are both completely viable. Occasionally you need to hit targets more than 12" away.)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I have 2 5 man vet squads I squat in backfield one is all Heavy bolters. The other is ML with flack. One provides hoard removal services the other is anti air or targets of opportunity. Like dev squads but more versatile as the shotguns are free and add that flexibility. I also will run 5 man vanguard vets too for tank hunting. That's before we even start with mixed specialist squads.

Most respondents seem to be "pure" deathwatch veterans players, and their points are often valid for this situation. But what about those of us who play a different Imperial army replete with meatshields that want to ally a squad or two of deathwatch? Because of this, I see their loadout being very situational and variable.

Is it just me or does Deathwatch seem better at killing Space Marines and Guard than any kind of truly threatening Xenos races?

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

DW seem best suited to msu leaf blowers. Or special target hunters. I run mine around my old Kantor stern guard list. Lots of drop pods and a few linchpin gunmen to hold objectives. Teleport homers to ensure vanguards land nearby and few rhinos for mobility. Pure vet squads can combat squad down also. Mix match squads require thought but give neat rules. If you kit them right they can be downright hateful.
