I share the thoughts, yet not the fears.
A couple of days ago I started a similar thread, asking whether people expected, like me, for changed options in the indices (such as 2 heavy weapons in a chaos space marine squad, or berzerker champions having access to combi-weapons, stuff they didn't have previous edition) to change again in the coming codices.
Of course, I can just build the models, paint them, and re-assign them to other squads if their options are suddenly illegal (again). Little trouble, but still a little annoying as well. Like chromedog just above seems to have been, I have been in this game for a while too. I have seen the introduction of dualwielding-laspistol jump pack imperial guard assault squads for crying out loud... Knew a guy who had three full squads of them. It seems no army (completely) survives the transition to a new edition and that's okay. But my thread was a concern that this might even happen within an edition, by the changes in the transition from index to codex, where the index had changed from the previous codex already.
Often this seems to happen with highly variable units, such as unnamed characters. Players build a Space Marine Captain, lovingly converting him due to some special parts needed, an edition change comes along and bam! Options changed, and the converted, painted, and sometimes extremely lovely model is suddenly 'illegal'. Fortunately, this is only a problem when WYSIWYG becomes important, and in most casual games a bit of proxy left and a bit of leeway right does wonders.
Hence the thoughts, but not the fears.
