Not sure really.
A meta is clearly forming and the early weeks of "bring anything and give it a whirl" seem to be past. Maybe not everywhere (and certainly not with all players) but it is for me.
AM look great, Marines are solid and Necrons are bad. Certain factions have very few competitive choices to the point where they are either garbage or 90% the same. 7th was worse but the gloss that everything would be viable is coming off. I am hopeful point changes can resolve this, but fear that is now going to be put off until Chapter Approved is published.
Also while point tinkering boosts balance it doesn't really generate hype. If anything it just serves to undermine the codexes because you know they are going to be FAQed as soon as they are available.
Anyway with that aside the models are great and I expect to like all imminent releases. The weird hunchback DG tank is the only potential miss - and that may look better once we get it in focus.

In fact it's already starting to show where people mention it's not as good as 2nd or even the bland 3rd edition.
Those tend to be the usual naysayers.. Or having some serious rose tinted goggles going on.

The hype seems to have faded and left behind a more functional game than 7th. There are more people playing, games are closer, and there are significantly fewer units/rules/mechanics that are just flat-out wrong in some way than there used to be. There are still good armies and bad armies, there are still OP units and bad units, but the landscape is more open and more functional than it has been in a long time.

It's helped by GW showing a willingness to actually change the rules in response to community feedback. Mind you there is still lots of room for improvement, but it's a right step forward.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Tycho wrote:While people are still having fun with the game (and THRILLED that 7th is gone), my group is starting to get a little anxious. The biggest thing everyone was happy about is the streamlining. The lack of bloat was a huge thing. Everyone is also really enjoying not having to bring 5 books to every game and having the rules so easily accessed. That said, it's starting to feel like we actually just paid to be Alpha/Beta testers for the ruleset and GW is now FAQing so rapidly that it's making people nervous. It feels like a different version of what we had last edition where it started to get difficult to track all the rules, exceptions to the rules and addendums to the exceptions to the rules. Then they announced Chapter Approved and it's like c'mon! The whole point of this edition was streamlining and you're now FAQing almost every week AND you're about to release a new book of additional rules?
Don't get me wrong, some of the things they changed were good changes (like the flyers change for example - that was really well done IMO), but a lot of these would have been sorted with even a modicum of proper play testing, so it's frustrating that we even need them.
I think the next few months will be really telling. It's a pretty big deal around here that people who have been playing 8th for so short a time like it so much that they're very protective of it so that's a good thing. If, after the next few months everything settles down and GW breaks from their usual habit of complicating things with constant changes and updates, I see a really bright future here for 8th. On the other hand, if, after a few months we are still in a constant FAQ cycle and it looks like the rules are slowly starting to bloat again (this is the fear in my group atm), then I'm not sure how long the local folks are going to stick with it. A "living ruleset" is one thing, but a ruleset that changes with almost Tzeenchian style whimsy and frequency is something else entirely ...
This has to be a common feeling. It pretty much sums up rmy groups attitude right now.

To be fair, my local area was never hyped to begin with over any GW product, so no surprise its been viewed with a massive "meh" and folks went right back to playing X-wing, Warmahordes, Guildball, etc...

Far more interest in tournaments and a lot of old players coming back in my area. No loss of hype yet here.

8th is still massively more balanced than 7th could ever even have dreamed of being.

My only gripe is that these first batch of codexes were printed months ago and thus prove that GW don't actually care or take into account feedback.
Proof:
Copypaste errors from the SM Codex (Lack of Ironclad Launcher points, etc).
Copypaste Errors from the CSM Codex (Cypher not having his no summoning rule, etc)

I have two gripes about 8th but they can be easily fixed.
# I'd like to see levels of cover and different effects for different types of cover.
*Woods, grass and bigger models between shooter and target make an obscured shot. -1 to enemy To-Hit rolls.
*Behind something solid like a ruins wall adds +1 to To-Save rolls.
*Inside a building adds +1 on To-Save rolls. Two inches or more away from the window also gives -1 to both your own and against enemy To-Hit rolls.
*Dedicated fortifications and trenches offer +2 to To-Save rolls and -1 against enemy To-Hit rolls.
*Purchased fortifications have their own profile.
#Vehicles and Armour made for carrying heavy weapons negate the Heavy Weapon movement penalties.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |

Vehicles that need it already have that. Land Raiders, Dark Lances and Leman Russes all have some variation of this. It is silly that a Baneblade doesn't though.
