Has the hype of 8th started to fade?

It has in my small group for sure.

Probably not due to the edition itself - more due to the fact my mates are constantly cancelling sessions we've had organized for months - but my hype has died a lot.

But GW is still making some positive steps!

It's normal for hype to go down. This edition is still great compared to others in the past. It has its downs but it's still a great improvement overall. Eventually it devolves into "that game I like to play" from "I CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME AND PLAY". It's normal and the same for anything else.

I'm very much looking forward to having a steady flow of content.

New models.

Codex's.

Game tweaking. (Sorry to all the people who ran out and bought 5 stormravens)

No. I guess it will start fading as soon as all armies have their books. Assuming the cycle is not refreshed by then.

I'm sure the hype will pick right up now they've finished with Primaris for the moment.

I say the hype will last until DG, then we'll start seeing people looking at the game objectively again (I fully admit that most people might still be wearing rose colored glasses due to having "the 7th shock"). DG has been (arguably) the most hyped faction ever since the leaked images of the Terminators, plague marines and ofc Mortarion (which were things that the fandom had been clamoring for ever since the TS release).

I'm expecting disappointment from the DG release; not because it's going to be bad, but everyone's hyped it up so much that unless they become the next 7th Scatbike, people are going to be disappointed.

I think the hype around the *edition*, specifically, has decreased. We'll still see hype for factions as they get releases, just like how there was hype for the Triumvirates among their various factions.

..What sort of hype? It's like people are having fun with the game, and looking forward to new releases hype? Or is just like hyping the game hype.

People here are having fun actually using armies that they never would have used before, that's for sure.

No hype decrease yet. It's too soon for Chapter Approved to fix all the points values. GW's promises with 8th will live or die on what's in that book.

I think it's still going pretty strong based on the trade groups. I know my hope of trading WMH to disgruntled 40k players hasn't panned out the way I'd hoped.

Not at all, still very excited to play. Would play more, but between summer, family and busy schedule of both me and some of my gaming mates it's hard to squeeze in time to play.

I'm still excited but admittedly I have grown quite weary of all the primaris marine stuff. I get they are new & we are all supposed to be excited but...its a big universe out there & right now about 99% of it isn't being talked about. I want to see ork, dark eldar, nid, SoB, IG releases etc. They are what keep me interested in the setting. Space marines are great but there is only so many months...years...decades...one can tolerate of non-stop marine releases. Hype thrusters are fueled & ready though if the "New GW" decides to come out of its safe bubble & support the rest of the Warhammer 40k universe.

The huge, long, drawn-out rehash of tired marine designs did a great job tamping down my hype. We went from "It's a new edition! Everyones got new toys! Everyone's got stuff to look forward to!" to a solid four months of

POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWER ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR YOU GUYSSSSSSS!

We're week four of an ongoing campaign that has blatantly favored power armor at every turn (even awarding double points for painting any space marine unit one week, and giving power armored units double points in the mission the next...) and besides Necromunda the only release we have to look forward to is "omg guys its another primarch how hyped are you for a PRIMARCH we've never done those before".

I think at this point for me the hype will return the second we see anybody else. I don't care who, it could be an army I dont play at all, I just want to see what subfaction tactics look like for someone whose undies dont go clank.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

To a degree. I think we've all kinda settled on our opinion of 8th now which is generally "at least it isn't 7th", while also accepting that it still has flaws. Just flaws they've been working on correcting.

Though the really haphazard way they keep trying to hurriedly patch the game (troops, flyers, subfactions using codices as a second level of stop gap) is doing a lot to kill my buzz. Responsiveness is good, but it feels a bit slapdash atm.

Yeah its faded the everything's balanced against everything bs is exposed for the lie it is, the rules are still wonky as fekke and prices keep climbing.

Not at all. This is still a sort of pre-8th edition after all since only SM codex is out. Other armies will get new rules and models. The real 8th edition will start at early 2018 I think.

But note that we're in august now and playing 40k isn't probably the best way to enjoy summer

It's died down slightly from the fever pitch that it was at during preview season, but it's still very high. The level of activity in painting, purchasing and playing is the highest I can recall.

If the Ork Codex can restore the optimism people felt from the previews, then it'll go off the charts.

While people are still having fun with the game (and THRILLED that 7th is gone), my group is starting to get a little anxious. The biggest thing everyone was happy about is the streamlining. The lack of bloat was a huge thing. Everyone is also really enjoying not having to bring 5 books to every game and having the rules so easily accessed. That said, it's starting to feel like we actually just paid to be Alpha/Beta testers for the ruleset and GW is now FAQing so rapidly that it's making people nervous. It feels like a different version of what we had last edition where it started to get difficult to track all the rules, exceptions to the rules and addendums to the exceptions to the rules. Then they announced Chapter Approved and it's like c'mon! The whole point of this edition was streamlining and you're now FAQing almost every week AND you're about to release a new book of additional rules?

Don't get me wrong, some of the things they changed were good changes (like the flyers change for example - that was really well done IMO), but a lot of these would have been sorted with even a modicum of proper play testing, so it's frustrating that we even need them.

I think the next few months will be really telling. It's a pretty big deal around here that people who have been playing 8th for so short a time like it so much that they're very protective of it so that's a good thing. If, after the next few months everything settles down and GW breaks from their usual habit of complicating things with constant changes and updates, I see a really bright future here for 8th. On the other hand, if, after a few months we are still in a constant FAQ cycle and it looks like the rules are slowly starting to bloat again (this is the fear in my group atm), then I'm not sure how long the local folks are going to stick with it. A "living ruleset" is one thing, but a ruleset that changes with almost Tzeenchian style whimsy and frequency is something else entirely ...

How can the hype die when they just dropped a awesome Mortarion upon us.

The hype wont die for me until all my armies have gotten their codexes and models and ive been playing for real a while.

Have they? I've not seen any particularly large amount of hype for Death Guard. Mortarion maybe, but not the rest of the faction.

Also, nice of you to admit that we're all wearing rose tinted glasses for us, we might have had trouble admitting it for ourselves. Especially those of us who never played 7th at all.

I remember the DG release basically eclipsed the Primaris rumors until the latter were definitively revealed, and a lot of people were speculating on Mortarion. Plus there was already some disappointment when DGs turned out to be "Nerfed", despite still being viable cult troopers.

As for the rose-tinted glasses, I did say "most", not "all". While I really do like 8th as a game system, I have to admit that most people that agree often say something along the lines of "better than 7th". Considering 7th was widely considered the worst edition ever (even when it was the current edition), being simply "better than 7th" isn't exactly a high bar. Hence, after all of the teased releases have been, well, released and the fandom had time to adjust, we're gonna see the cracks in the system (and not just the ones the naysayers are already talking about). In fact it's already starting to show where people mention it's not as good as 2nd or even the bland 3rd edition. GW has had almost a full decade of poor rules writing; all of that isn't going to go away overnight, much less form a perfect and flawless system.

Again, while I acknowledge there are people who genuinely like the system with no hangups, the majority of people are comparing it to 7th, which kinda skews it because it is good, just not the second coming of the Emperor some people make it out to be.

Sounds a lot like you're remembering from the eyes of someone that cares a great deal more about DG than Primaris.

I'm not going to get any models from either line, and I've liked the release of both... and the way I've experienced it, the Primaris have been the bigger hype all along.

All I'm saying is that when Mortarion's WIP model was leaked, people were speculating left and right, but when the Primaris Sergeant was leaked, people were accusing it of being fake. As for me, if you look at my posts during the time, I was actually far more concerned with the Primaris Marines (largely speculating on their impact on the game, usually negatively, and praising the models) than the DG (mainly because I already have a large Plague Marine force as is). Primaris may have had more exposure but generally I feel like people were praying that they didn't exist rather than being hyped about them.
