Saw it last night very good, as others have said Pennywise was creepy as hell and the child actors were amazing.

There were moments when the entire cinema was laughing there heads off even though we all knew how messed the overall scenarios were, felt this fit with the theme of it very well with the adults ignoring the missing children.

Think this might be the first movie I buy on DVD in a while!

It was probably all the coke he was doing.

But as far as the movie goes, it was actually quite good.

Heh, yeah, my roommate was talking about how they kept some things in there that surprised him. My immediate question was 'Did they keep that scene?"

The answer was a resounding and relieving "No."

I thought it fitted in quite well within the greater story to be honest.

They couldn't film that scene without going to jail anyway. So...anyone expecting THAT scene would be crazy!!

Bah, I don't really care if that scene is present or not, the movie could be great or bad anyway, it's not a single (and irrelevant) scene that determines the movie's success or flop.

What I found really interesting is that many people accept and probably even like useless extra gory scenes that are there without any motive but only to shock the public (I'm not referring only to this specific movie) and can't tolerate a random and inexplicable act of sex between a girl and six boys.

As discussed in the previous thread, it was explicable. There was a point to the scene, although I bet at this point he really wishes he'd left it out.

King addressed the infamous paragraph recently, I don't remember exactly what he said but something along the lines of: "people freak out about that one scene.... but not the multiple child murders. That says something, but I don't know what"

George Arrr Martin once complained about something similar. He was complaining that vividly describing the burying of an axe in someone's head is ok but vividly discribing love making is somehow immoral.

I enjoyed the movie after seeing it today--I think it's the best movie adaptation possible, given that a lot of distinctive things about the book (the alternating between the two timelines, the historical segments and side stories, the chilling ways the monster has subtly conditioned the town's adults to ignore horrible things almost under their noses) couldn't have been conveyed that well with the limited time of a movie.

That said, I liked a lot of stuff here, and I think the movie stands alone very well. Even when I broadly knew what to expect, it still got some jumps out of me, the changes they made mostly worked, the sense of oppressiveness was well-realised, and the characterisation worked well, especially considering it had seven protagonists to juggle. I'll definitely see the second part.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

The book has two parallel stories (the characters as children in 1958 and adults in 1985), and the chapters alternate between the two periods, with both stories beginning and ending together. The characters lose their memories of fighting It in between (beyond a vague "we hung out together and had some adventures") and are slowly recovering them in 1985, so it's also them remembering what really happened the first time around. I'm assuming there will just be two movies.

Saw it yesterday and was quite disappointed.
Felt like Stand by me with intermittent appearances by Pennywise (nowhere near enough of him throughout).
It felt disjointed, too long, not scary/psychological enough (more jump scare than creepy) and ultimately I got bored towards the end.
I actually found the girls dad more creepy than Pennywise which probably sums it up for me.

It was well shot and Pennywise when on screen was creepy and well played but ultimately it was chock full of thropes and cliche.

And the end confrontation was like

A wasted opportunity albeit I havent read the books/originals so dont have a pure reference point.

In the movie's defense, the battle between the kids and IT was metaphysical in the tunnels. Real hard to portray that.

Which is probably one of the most disingenious statements ever considering that the multiple child murders is precisely what defines the evil force as evil whereas the sexual encounter is portrayed as a not only positive, but necessary and empowering for the only female main character who happens to also be the target of violence, both physical and sexual. Really, King should have just owned up to his unintentional misstep and noted clumsiness in handling female characterization, instead of doubling down, especially given that the Pennywise's femaleness is revealed as being horrible in the same work. Especially odd as King has been apologetic in the past regarding some of his characterizations of homosexual males and that his drug abuse at the time of would have given him some pretty credible cover.

That's a point I hadn't considered, but the criticism over the scene is generally that it exists at all, not the tone in which it is presented.

That might be your criticism of it, but the general complaint is "OMG tween sex", not "OMG tween sex and it is presented in a neutral/positive manner".

Saw it today and I liked it. It relied a bit on jump scares, but overall it had a great atmosphere and the child actors really complemented Pennywise very well. Loved the take on Pennywise as well, very distinct from Curry but still instantly recognizable as IT. And even as macabre as Pennywise was, he also managed to still feel like a clown at times.

It did feel a bit like Stand By Me, but not anymore than I would expect from what is basically a "teenage misfit kids experiencing a meaningful summer and overcoming adversity to grow together and mature in decades past" kind of movie. IT always has basically been "Stand By Me vs Killer Clown" in that regard.

I enjoyed it but I also think it relied on jump scares a bit too much. I wasn't sure why they swapped the roles of Mike and Ben around but it's a minor thing. I don't think Patrick was a necessary character as they could have used Belch or Chris as they had changed parts of it already. Henry wasn't as impacting, I guess he had a big impact though.

I need to go back and watch the original one as currently I feel I prefer that, but I haven't seen it for a long time. Rose tinted and all that.

No pity, no remorse, no shoes
