Yeah, I'm doing mostly armored forces, trying to minimize infantry. I did the reverse in the past (naturally when it was worse than now). I'll stick with being second rate if I don't have to paint so many guys :p

(The conversion choice I made for my infantry also doesn't scale well, sadly, as it is time consuming to get looking right.)

So it sounds like I should remove my plasma cannon choice from my TC, then. Just more heavy bolters in that case? He's driving a Vanquisher, which is evidently second-rate to begin with.

For some reason I thought Storm Bolters were more points. Not sure what they do on a tank, as I don't have my book with me and haven't committed everything to memory just yet. Visually I think the Stubbers look cool - storm bolters are just too...stubby

I am of the opinion that a stubber is always worth it's points wherever you can put it. (I put 3 on my repulsor tank - but they are -1 ap stubbers) Plasma is risk on tanks because of the risk of mortal wound on overcharge. If you can get reroll 1's it's mitigated a great deal. Still though - the heavy bolter is just such a decent weapon for the cost and it has no risk and it keeps the price tag lower. It's just the best option.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

I always take storm bolters on everything I can. For 2 points you get a pretty nice little gun.

Heavy Bolter Sponsons: They're cheap, and they've got 36" of range. The question is if they're going to have anything to shoot at. They're worth considering for multirole tanks, and are definitely an add-on to give to anti-infantry tanks. I'd pass on them for AT Tanks, though.
Heavy Flamer Sponsons: Like Heavy Bolters, but with crap for range. Consider only for short-range tanks, and even then consider it hard, because Heavy Bolters are half the price.
Multimelta Sponsons: Consider for AT tank, but be wary of their range and general lack of performance for cost. At 40 points, you could have bought another squad of riflemen, and are a third of the way to a Manticore. Unless you're going tank hunting, pass.
Plasma Cannons: I personally wouldn't bother. They're kind of expensive, I like not taking 6 Mortal Wounds, and while they theoretically complement some Main Gun options, I really don't see purpose for them.

With regards to hull guns:
If it's going to kill infantry, Heavy Bolter, otherwise, Lascannon. As someone said, for short range tanks, maybe a Heavy Flamer.

As a rule, your Leman Russ isn't going to be moving very far very fast. It'll probably sit around in one place until it needs to capture an objective, since the Battle Cannon and Lascannon let it do that. Short range sponsons force it to move around, which it doesn't really want to be doing anyway, since that doesn't play nice with the ballistic skill.

plasma sponsons no longer deal 6 mortal wounds and stop firing after rolling a one on overcharge. Now they just deal a single mortal wound. They're far better now and I have an Executioner that I almost always use them on. Other than that or being Tallarn they're not really as reliable as something like heavy bolters though.
