Depends on the army. Brand new ork boyz with good customization I'd buy, and new eldar I would definitely pick up, but probably not like thousand sons or drukhari again.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I voted no. However, not because of the reason stated (i.e. they serve the same purpose). I voted no because I'm no longer willing to pay GW prices (even at discount, which is the sadder part) for miniatures or models. I came to that decision several months ago, and it was a little sad. There's no "going forward with 40K" for me. My armies are my armies and as they're slowly made irrelevant or pointless I'll disappear into the folds of 2nd edition.

So, in short, no - but because I will never pay $80-100 for a tank, or $60+ for infantry figures, or $25-30 for a single plastic figure.

Count me on the side of no, I'd just buy the new ones and add them. Then again, I like buying old outdated models and trying to shoehorn them into armies with newer models. Case in point, I just added 20 old Cadians and 20 Valhallans to my Guard army.

Can't vote. Your poll lacks the "Maybe" 3rd option.

It would depend entirely upon wether I liked the new models enough. And even then I'm more likely to just add the new into the existing army.

Sold my Sisters of Battle last year to fund purchase of better looking models.

I'd say no, I actually like older models, they have a sense of history and remind us of the times past. The only time I did this was I only had a little old dark eldar but those models were ugly as sin to me. I still even kept a few, kept a raider, some named characters and the green goblins aside from that I sold the rest for the new models.

All my other armies I actually like the models for and wouldn't get rid of my old models. If anything I wish I could get ahold of more old marine models and guard models as I love collecting the vintage models.

So I'm asking this because it's been flung around a bit. I'm curious how people feel about the new Chaos space marine kits and if other people would rush out to buy more detailed versions of their current army.

Let's just say you play Orks(Tau, Necrons, etc), full army the whole 9 yards. GW says they're going to do a big release replacing all those old kits with new, more detailed ones. These are a 1:1 replacement, no new units. Would you buy all those Boyz again? Paint them, never use the old ones because you have new better looking ones?

(Granted there are some outliers, eldar, who don't have a "full" plastic line so I'd consider them a little biased as they should be)

This is what many people do. They just don't do it the way you're thinking. Most people get to be better painters over time, and end up getting a box of something they already had through a starter set or a value box etc - they won't go out of their way to get the box, they won't go out of their way to avoid it. The box they already have is usually prioritized after the really new stuff, and will replace the box they already had in order of preference for use. They won't chuck the old unit in case they just want to run more of them. This lets them rationalize the value box as still a value, and that they didn't just chuck a perfectly good model kit to repaint it out of some sort of money wasting vanity. I've still got 2nd Edition color scheme Ultramarine Tactical and Devastator Squads with red weapons. I don't use them, except for a very rare Devastator fill-in - but I won't toss them either.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

It depends entirely on if i like the models or not.
I mean i have aspect warriors for my eldar that are from early, Think they may have been new for 3rd edition.
So if they update them, look awsome and give them rules that make me want to put them on a table. Yes. Otherwise no.

No except in very particular circumstances. Most of my models I like so I don't see the need to replace them and just because GW makes a new version of it doesn't mean it should be invalidated (by GW or myself). I'll give some examples of past releases and my general train of thought when updated models get released.

1. Broadsides where made larger instead of just being XV8's loaded with heavy weapons at the cost of jump capability. I personally love the concept that the Tau (or any army) sees the need for a certain combat unit and instead of engineering a whole new suit, instead uses the existing XV8 to build an artillery suit platform. It feels like something that was figured out in times of war and resembles some of the tank/self propelled gun developments of WW2. I still use my old broadsides and even continue to convert some excess crisis suits to be broadsides. Just because GW made it look different doesn't mean I have to stop liking the old design. Note: All my old broadsides have been upgraded with HYMPs and not once has anybody cared that I'm using old broadsides in the missileside config.

2. New XV8 kit. Honestly I love the new crisis suits as they have more modeling potential and have nice clean sculpts. Love the new kits and allows me to make even cooler commander suits (proper iridium armor) using the crisis kit. Still use my old crisis suits but I do prefer the new ones. Some of the stiffer looking old crisis got converted to broadsides due to crisis suits surplus.

3. Flash gits. Always loved the gitz in the fluff but didn't like the old resin/metal/whatever design so I kitbashed Gits out of Nobz. GW made proper looking Gitz in plastic but while they look good, I strongly prefer my kitbashed lot and will continue to kitbash more Gitz if I want more. Same thing if they made a proper mega armored warboss. Might be a badass model but I'm sticking to my 3rd party (and upgraded) boss as it's both unique and special to me instead of being the same as everyone else's.

An example of something I would replace would be a Weirdboy due to really not liking finecast and not really being fond of the model. Like having a Weirdboy in the game but an improved model would be desired.

That's a good point. I'm one of the folks who calls for plastic Aspect Warriors at every opportunity - but I've got 20+ of most Aspect Warrior types in metal models that I'm very fond of. Would I buy new plastics? If I liked them and the fit with the existing aesthetic, yes, but I would be buying them to supplement my existing collection rather than replace it. I wouldn't be buying as many as somebody who was starting an Aspect Host from scratch. To me the main benefit would be making Aspect-based Eldar armies more relevant again, giving them a bit of love and attention and attracting new people to start the army. Because even though I love my old metal models, I've got to imagine that there aren't many new people getting into Aspect Hosts because of the finecast, and that doesn't bode well for the future of my army.

Depends on how good the new kit is and if I deem the new kit to have better scaling than the old one. But potentially, yes.

AnomanderRake wrote:Depends on how bad the old kit was. I redid a lot of my Custodians with Warden bodies when that kit came out, and I'd replace my Guardians in a heartbeat if a new kit came along, but I like most of my Space Marines the way they are.

I am curious, what do you not like about the Custodian Guard kit? I agree that the Warden kit is awsome, but the Guard kit is one of the best in recent memory in my opinion.

My Eldar army is split. I’ve got RT to early 3rd models, from when I first dabbled with the idea of making them my second army. Nothing for about two decades, and then a relaunch in 6th. So very old, and very new, with not a lot of middle ground. I’ve basically hit a wall of what I can add to my army due to finecast. I picked up a squad of rangers and fire dragons when I jumped back in, but those will be the last I ever get. The medium does not suit their sculpts. I’ve got a squad of hawks and spiders in metal. Given the option, I’d buy at least one squad of all the aspects in plastic, including them. Love the old guys, but they have some issues.

For someone who like the concept of the craftwords, the aspect warriors are integral to the army. The fact that the core units of one of the major armies are older then a lot of the players, and in resin, does not bode well for new blood. Luckily most of the sculpts have held up quite well. But a lot of the range is showing its age. Many of the plastics have soft detail an inefficient sprues. Resin is not newbie friendly. The whole range could use a refresh. I just hope that they bring love to some of the old classics, rather then shoehorn new units in. The nature of the aspect warriors make that a little rough. They are the major aspects of war. To have a new unit step on their toes would be lore breaking.

If they redid the range, I’d weep for my wallet.

If I already own more units than I will ever need. I would not replace them with a new kit. But let's say I want to own 2 max squads of 12 kroot hounds. I have 8 models currently in metal. If a plastic kroot hound kit releases tomorrow, then you bet I will be buying the last 14 models in plastic.

Aye, the poll seems to be missing at least two options, going by the responses:

- Maybe, I'd have to judge on a case-by-case basis
- No, but I may well expand an existing army with new kits

Won't replace an Army.
I'll keep whatever I have. And maybe add something different if I really like the kits. As someone who doesn't play much, there is no ARMY, just collected forces which follow a theme.

It would depend on the kit. If I had a 2nd Ed. era Ork army I'd replace that thing like it was my job. The Nelson Orks were leaps and bounds over everything produced before, and are pretty much a benchmark.

It would take an act on that level to get me to replace a whole army. Model per model basis? I replaced 12 tanks based off the old Rhino chassis so yes.

It depends. If the models were better, sure at some point and I did just that when GW redid several Necron units. On the other hand, if I didn't like the models, I won't replace my old ones, like Flayed Ones. I kept my old metal ones, and still pick up more of the old models off of eBay and the like when I find a good deal.

While, I would absolutely buy new kits, I would never use them to "replace" the old ones. I intend to keep any kits I have and keep using them forever. Any new kits I buy will be used alongside the old ones, or, where the scales differ, for a new project entirely, but I will never "retire" an old kit.
