So I'm asking this because it's been flung around a bit. I'm curious how people feel about the new Chaos space marine kits and if other people would rush out to buy more detailed versions of their current army.

Let's just say you play Orks(Tau, Necrons, etc), full army the whole 9 yards. GW says they're going to do a big release replacing all those old kits with new, more detailed ones. These are a 1:1 replacement, no new units. Would you buy all those Boyz again? Paint them, never use the old ones because you have new better looking ones?

(Granted there are some outliers, eldar, who don't have a "full" plastic line so I'd consider them a little biased as they should be)

no... i woudl probably buy the new kits and run alongside the old ones. heck my ork boys are everythign from mono pose OG metal ones to plastic monopose then on to the newer plastic kit alongside AOBR boyz.. I don't want my army to look uniform. Ditto the TAU. i only have curent fire warriors but if I had newer ones I woudl just buy them too and run them beside them to make it look like a different planet's force workign together for the greater good.

That's pretty cool to be honest. Your army is basically orks through the ages

My only 40k army so far is Space Marines, but even still I wouldn't replace any of my marines with newer kits. I would buy the newer kits, but nothing would replace my tacticals and termies. I also wouldn't want to paint what's essentially the same army again in new kits in the same color scheme (which I would because I love my chosen chapter's fluff).

Even if I played another army, I would still just add in the newer units without replacing anything (unless it was finecast because I avoid that, going so far as to track down metal versions of finecast minis when possible). The only time I would replace anything would be in the case of characters, which usually change drastically when their kits are redone.

For plastic Eldar aspect warriors, that would be a “Yes”, if they kept mostly the same aesthetic. Though honestly, if this came to pass it would be done with gritted teeth because of GW’s price.

However, I wouldn’t do so for any of the other factions. I still happily use my old broadsides (with metal rail guns) and other suits back from around 3E, for example. As well as my RTB01 marines.

If you LIKE your current models, why would you? If you dislike the current models, but love the fluff and can’t convert I would totally get it.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I clicked no, but I'll admit I've bought a couple of models that are just more practical in plastic, Wraithguard and Jetbikes that stay upright are just betterer

I feel that Ishould point out that Necrons had a big revamp back in 5E, with wraiths being an obvious model that was redone. Luckily, I didn’t have the old so I didn’t have to worry about the switch. I would have most likely bought and replaced the old versions if I did.

Likewise, ‘nids had a revamp so long ago I can’t remember when it was done. However, I still use my Space Crusade Warriors in my current force....

All my armies are consistently scaled right now, so no.

In the future I could see adding some of the new Chaos Marines, they look great, and I'm less a stickler for scale when it comes to Chaos.

It's crazy, but if I had the money I actually would consider rebuying my Tyranid Warrior army. I think both the ancient and the current models look great. But that would be something like 1100$.

As a Sisters player; who is actually looking at this exact situation: No.

I will buy some of the new kits to get me to Ro3 on units that I don't have 3 of yet [Seraphim and Repentia], and maybe reinforce my infantry sections, but I don't intent to phase out my current collection.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Depends on how bad the old kit was. I redid a lot of my Custodians with Warden bodies when that kit came out, and I'd replace my Guardians in a heartbeat if a new kit came along, but I like most of my Space Marines the way they are.

No, why would I? I built and painted them, I'm going to field them.
Now if the new kits had equipment that wasn't previously available, such as immortals with gauss cannons...maybe.

If they released plastic Steel Legion or Vostroyans I would immediately sideline my Cadians and start stocking up on the new guys.

Dare I dream of a kit with more than just a flamer and grenade launcher?

It's tough because I don't like having two of what are supposedly the same unit that look noticeably different (and scale creep tends to do that), but I also don't like transporting older metal models that are easier to damage.

Thankfully I bought back into the game as a Marine player in 8th so all my kits 100% plastic and relatively new so I can say no on the poll, but then I have the looming issue of what to do with my Astares once the Primaris line is complete and I can still use my Astares but have almost no reason to actually do so.

My RTB-01 Beakies have yet to be replaced, any marine kits I've bought since then is to add/supplement the 18th.

I do really like the new Primaris stuff and have a pretty decent Primaris only force but they will never replace my Astartes of the 18th.

It would entirely depend upon what they did, specifically as this would really only affect my Cadians.

If they added a kit with armored bracers, armor on the upper legs, heavier helmets with gorgets attached, webbing, and new weapons?

It depends. If the newer models where close to the older models look-wise, but better overall, I'd mix and match. So yes to buying the new models, and no to never using my lovingly painted older guys. If I was replacing heavier, more break prone metal models, with light, bouncy plastic ones, I would do a complete redo of an army.

There are some pretty interesting answers here. Personally I'm too ocd to not have everything uniform. I know I couldn't have a RT marine next to my current tacticals for instance. I'm not shocked but it seems like if it's fine cast its getting shelved for the plastic kit

Have to say no.
Maybe a kit here or there to flesh things out- but only if the kit is significantly cheaper than thr old one.
I wouldn't buy a battle sister squad of 10 (or 2x5) if it cost the same as or close to the current box of ten.

The poll and questions are a little askew.

I would, and have bought new models even though I have old ones. But not to replace, but fight alongside. RTB01’s ride in their trusty little rhino shoulder to shoulder with modern kits, with decades of troopers between them.

I will “retire” models to the swap shelf. Originally my battle company had 2xRT tac squads, 2x2nd ed squads, and 2x3rd ed. One of the 2nds was bumped out and replaced with the 4th ed starters, and a large number of Missile Launchers, Flamers, and BP/chainsword sarges were edged out by more intelligently geared marines as parts became available.

I keep thinking I want to replace my old terminators. The new plastics are a lot more dynamic than my old metals. And on slightly larger bases. But when I ask my hobby budget if $100 would be well spent replacing the old guys or buying something new and shiny, it’s not a contest. And there is always something new and shiny.

I wouldn’t replace old, but I might start something new.

I have red marines I’ve played as Blood Angels, Ult-red Marines, and Salamand-reds.

Were I to modernize my Marines, by which I mean buy Marine stuff again, I would be tempted to go Salamanders. So I would have red old-marines and green new-marines.

A primaris-ed Vulcan Hestan that kept the awesomeness that is the current model could get me to seriously consider it.

Well I bought 20 additional Plague Marines to use them next to the ones' from 2nd to 6th Edition. they'll never replace the old Marines though, they get different equipment and hopefully there'll be a large Apokalypse game some day where I can use 70 Plague Marines

Depends on the kit and army.
Cultist kit with real autoguns, stub carbines option aswell as more special and heavy weapons, you bet my cannonfodder would get massively inflated.
Tanks on the other hand, not really.

Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"

I would, but I fully acknowledge that 90% of the people calling for new sculpts aren't actually interested in buying new models and are more interested in making certain their faction is given the same amount of attention as everyone elses.

Even when I played warmachine a good resculpt always brought me back. I was sooo happy when the Behemoth was resulpted.

I've also gone the other way - I raided everywhere I could to get old versions of orks to match my new ones so I could have as much variety in my hordes as possible.

I most certainly wouldn't with Orks and Necrons. Why would I want to pay double the cost for models I think hold up really well. Other factions would be a case by case. I think the Dark Eldar Kabalites and Wyches are still good. I haven't bothered with my CSM. I use the new kits for Kill Team and as Chosen but still field the old Chaos Space Marines. The Terminators aren't so different that I don't even mind mixing and matching old and new in the same squad.

I have ignored CWE in Kill Team because most of their choices aren't plastic. Still, I don't think I could be bothered to spend GW brand new model kit prices either. Of course, I think that has to do more with I am good with the number of Kill Team factions I already have. I already have Dark Eldar and don't really feel the need for another elf team. Even if I did, it would be Harlequins.

Imperial Guard would feel like I would need to take out a small loan if they got new kits and new prices. They certainly couldn't be more Cadians for me to want to bother. I am already kicking myself a little in that I should have just got a 3rd party IG kill team since I only kinda like the scions and don't like the guardsmen.

Tau are kinda weird for me. I was a little surprised how big and thick they were when I finally saw them in person. I could stand for Fire Warriors and Pathfinders to actually be a bit smaller and weeder, but I am sure I am in the minority.

Yes I would update every model in my Ork army if I believed a better alternative was available.

It would take time, sure, but hobby projects of such scope always do. Its not much different to debasing all the boys (that I have also recently done) to be honest.
