Thank you! Along with the 4th Company I also have a squadron of Predator Destructors and some Razorbacks to paint, I just need some of the newer style Land Raiders to round them out.

Today's update sees a break from power armour with some Imperial Guard Infantry. My Steel Legion are waiting for me to acquire some more contrast paints so instead I knocked these guys up, no prizes for guessing what inspired the colour scheme!

Phantine 22nd Skyborne Regiment

It is well known that the regiments of the Imperial Guard are endless in their variety, yet most adhere to a basic template, ranks of lasgun armed infantry supported by heavy weapons who grind their enemy into dust through shear attrition. The Phantine 22nd Skyborne Regiment do not fit that mould. All of the infantry regiments raised on Phantine are drop troops, but apart from that specialisation most echo the standard equipment of the Astra Miltiarum the galaxy over. The 22nd however are an elite, marked out by their distinctive green uniforms the 22nd are geared for close range high temp operations. Instead of lasguns they each carry two high calibre autopistols and are clad in carapace armour, beyond this each soldier carries a number of grenades or demolition charges and wears one of the regiments distinctive grav chutes. Originally conceived as a contingency to the seizure of one of their homeworld's aerostats by traitor forces, the 22nd specialise in dropping directly into battle to protect a key objective from sabotage, destroy an artillery position or capture a high value target before extracting by Valkyrie or being relieved by the mechanised columns of the Steel Legion.

It is so great to see all this Epic-scale action! Really brings back memories and you almost never see this stuff anymore. It makes me wish they would recreate a range in this scale as a way to get into the really massive battles with the godlike war machines. The biggest challenge is probably creating good infantry at this scale.

Thank you! That's the main appeal of Epic to me, that it can capture the ridiculous scale of warfare in the 41st Millenium, from your infantry through Titans all the way up to orbiting spacecraft. The Titanicus and Aeronautica releases are a good sign that GW hasn't abandoned the scale completely. In the meantime you can still get all the rules for Epic Armageddon with a wider range of well maintained army lists than GW managed to produce for the game, and there are a whole range of companies that make various infantry and vehicle figures. Personally I strongly recommend Vanguard Miniatures.

Today's update is the other half of the Imperials from Wings of Vengeance, both my Aeronautica Imperialis and Phantine Drop Troops are eagerly looking forward to the release of the Return to Taros box when they'll be getting some reinforcement!

Two Thunderbolts of Angel Flight. Prior to the Angelus Crusade the pilots of Angel Flight had never encountered Xiphon Interceptor's before. The first few encounters with the Night Lord fighters saw the squadron take severe casualties, almost halving in strength. However bitter experience and rapid reinforcement lessened the rate of attrition and soon Angel Flight was able to hold its own, even if they could not match the Night Lord's pilots they could at least keep them occupied long enough for the bombers they escorted to unleash their payloads.

By the way, how big are those Thunderbolts next to your Night Lords fighters?

To be fair Epic's original scale was all over the place depending on which model you were talking about! As far as I'm concerned the new stuff is close enough to the old to work on the same table, and its certainly a return to a scale that allows massed formation level warfare if GW chooses to go down that route.

Malika2 wrote:By the way, how big are those Thunderbolts next to your Night Lords fighters?

Give you asked so politely here's a picture! Remember the Thunderbolt is a significantly larger model than the Xiphon in 40k.

Over the last few days I have finished painting another Legion Tactical Detachment which brings me to two milestones! The first is 200 painted individual Night Lords, not counting the vehicles, and the second is alongside the Titans of Legio Cruor I can now field a fully painted 10,000 point army! Which obviously means its time for some group shots.

Two maniples of Legio Cruor titans march to war in support of a Night Lord's strike force. Impressive as this force is it is but a fraction of the forces mustered to Vadik's banner.

The sorcerer Arakelian leads his brothers into battle in the shadow of the First Maniple of Legio Cruor.

Between the guns of First Maniple and the armoured forces of the VIIIth Legion, Vadi'ks forces can shred armoured regiments in minutes.

You don't happen to have a 40k scaled Thunderbolt and Xiphon do you?

Thanks for much for sharing that picture by the way.

Also, great looking army you've got there!

I wish I did!

Today's update brings another company of Blood Angels, this time the Knights of Baal.

The Blood Angels 4th Company, the Knights of Baal, assemble in the midst of Dekkian Primus. Taken along with the entirety of the Ironhelms and supporting elements from the Armoury, 1st and 8th Companies nearly a quarter of the Blood Angels Chapter participated in the Angelus Crusade.

While Captain Machiavi accompanied his Tactical Squads in battle, Captain Castigon preferred to fight alongside his Assault Squads, seeking out and slaying enemy warlords and champions. Command of the Tactical Squads was left to Codicier Ishafel.

Captain Castigon and his Honour Guard at the forefront of the 4th Company's Assault Squads.

Whilst their Annihilator cousins hunted traitor armour the Predator Destructor Squadrons of the Blood Angels would suppress infantry positions with torrents of fire from their turret autocannons and sponson heavy bolters, pinned down the infantry would then be easy prey for the advancing Assault Squads.

I've moved away from painting Epic for a while to concentrate on a 28mm Eldar Exodite project which I am blogging on separately. However I have painted two models which I wanted to share in this blog, which have resulted in a small addition being made to the blog's title.

Crusade Group Angelus
The awesome gathering of Imperial might that constitutes the Angelus Crusade would be as nothing without the transports and protection of the Imperial Navy. To this end a dedicated Crusade Group was formed and formally seconded to the commanders of the Angelus Crusade. To the ships of the Imperial Navy were added the vessels of the Blood Angels Chapter, while they followed only the commands of their Chapter these vessels and the armoured cargo they contained within were a significant addition to the Imperial armarda.

I will be adding Prince Vadik in all his winged glory at some point, but nothing else daemonic is planned yet.

Thank you, it should make for some very cool games when I've got the rest of it painted!

As you may well have noticed I haven't done much on the Epic front in quite a while as I've been concentrating my hobby time on finishing off my Exodites, however I haven't forgotten about the little guys completely and wanted to share a small progress update.

Thank you! I like these square bases for the nice regimented look they give while still having room for a little variety in placement. If I do either a more horde based faction like Orks or less regimented faction like Eldar I might look into using circle bases instead.

I knuckled down and finished the rest of my Steel Legion platoon (in game terms they are a company but they're clearly platoon strength). I've also got some more Army Painter Desert Yellow spray so hopefully I'll get round to painting up their transports before too long as well.

801st Steel Legion, 2nd Company, A Platoon
Led by the bombastic Major Stahl the 2nd Company of the 801st Steel Legion are considered the most aggressive fighters in the whole regiment and A Platoon are their cutting edge. The war for Dekkian Primus would see them deploying out of Chimeras as they participated in massed armoured assaults and picking their way through near impassible tangles of girders and fallen rockrete. In either case those they met in battle would be subject to punishing volleys of las fire backed up by volleys of grenades and rockets fired from man portable launchers.

A Platoon formed up on parade

Major Stahl habitually leads his men from the front, where he can better demonstrate his skill with a blade. Skills whisper were acquired in his youth as a member of one of Armageddon's many underhive gangs.

So 2021 wasn't the most productive year on the Epic front, but I did get a few things painted for both the Legio Cruor and the Blood Angels.

The Nemesis Warbringer Tonitrus and the Warhound Canis Bellum

Blood Angels Razorbacks

My aim is to make a little more progress on the Epic front this year, hopefully including painting up some engines of the Legio Ignatum. To start though is a second detachment of Night Lords Terminators.
