66usd for one tank before shipping is too steep for me. The truck was nice, but not that nice.

It's certainly hefty... But the Galahad from Mad Robot is $70, and the Kangaroo and Matilda from Vic Minis are $65 and $$75 respectively. And it's less than half the price of equivalent tanks from Forge World.

It's more than the plastic GW equivalents, certainly... But resin is expensive. And they're so very pretty.

It was a rhetorical question. If someone wants a 40k truck for Arbites, or whatever this is it! The price is not out of line with most of the other resin options, even for a kickstarter. Just hope that the economy of scale allows them to pull this off with such a low funding figure.

I would expect at those prices that they're covering themselves fairly well.

I was able to buy Mortian tanks on KS for a good fifteen bucks less apiece. I can buy tanks from them, Vic Miniatures, and a host of other companies right now at that exact price point which are equally nice. And I don't have to risk my money buying from a company which already had one KS shut down by GW for IP infringement.

I'd like them, but at that price point? Nah. Where's the incentive for me? It's not like the designs are so very original or special that I'm desperate to see them on the market.

Actually, the designs are what sells it, for me. The Mortian is gorgeous, but too big as a Russ, and they don't have a Chimera stand in. And Vic's are likewise very pretty models, but more low-tech than I'm looking for. These give me a Chimera and a Russ stand in that look just high-tech enough to fit with my SecDef Guard army.

And the designs are at least different enough from GW's that IP issues aren't as big a concern here as they were for the not-Primarch models.

I gotta say the tanks are very appealing and the truck is beautiful.

Mortian now has a medium tank that I am fairly sure is russ-sized, and he also sells an awesome mini-gorgon / mini-crassus transport. Just built four of those.

Guess it depends on the army which tank style fits the best though

If I were willing to look cheaper? Ramshackle do a tank for twenty odd quid. Nice conversions using bits from Blood and Skulls ain't too pricey.. Archon Studio's Empire of Men does them for what, thirty quid? I could name more. I'm literally drowning in russ and chimera options of all shapes and sizes and price points. The only reason I mentioned Mortian and Vic is because they're literally the top of the price point. Nobody else chargest as much as them, and they've been established companies doing top notch quality for a goodly time now. And as mentioned above, Mortian is actually doing a cheaper Russ sized tank now.

I just don't see why anybody would love this design specifically so much more than the multitude of others available, that they'd be willing to risk cash for some of the most expensive tanks in third party gaming history. I mean, judging by the fact they seem to be attracting backers, those people are out there. And I don't dislike the designs. I just...don't see what makes them special enough to risk that kind of money at that kind of ridiculous price. But that's just me.

Note that my above comment is for KS. If they were on a retail shelf right now, I'd consider them. I'm just referring to the risk of backing a fresh company in Russia on KS for large sums of money.

Ramshackle's tanks are, unsurprisingly, rather ramshackle, and Archon's is another primitive-aesthetic-scifi take. so, as with Vic, these aren't suitable alternatives for a more solid scifi aesthetic.

Other than, as I mentioned before, Forgeworld, which charges twice as much...

As I mentioned before, it's because they're aesthetically different to the others.

If the aesthetics aren't important to you, then no, you're not going to get why people would want these, and that's fine. But I'm happy to pay for something that fits the specific aesthetic that I'm looking for, which none of the alternatives I've come across so far do as well as these.

I'm not arguing here that you shouldn't put money in for this because you like them (heck, I'm not really arguing at all); I'm just not sure there's no other more 'modern/high-tech sci-fi' ones on the market which represent lower risk and equivalent or better value for money. Take for example, Secretweapons 6x6 Rapid Assault Vehicle:-

Spoiler:

Plenty modern. Ratgard does a modern sci-fi Chimera and Russ variant too:-

Spoiler:

Black Earth/Nuclear Shrimp literally just finished a Kickstarter with a modern Russ-style tank and they're an established company:-

Spoiler:

I could go on, but I think I've made my point that there's plenty of 'modern/high-tech' style kits around. That being said, I'm just derailing the thread at this point, so that'll be my last post on the matter. There's clearly a market for them (they've funded), so I'll just look forward to seeing them on the shelf!

Thanks for posting those alternatives Ketara!

I'd quite forgotten about some of them...

The nuclear shrimp tanks is lovely, but it's the same price point, and mine took almost 2 years to arrive and with pretty poor communication, so I wouldn't go relying on them for anything urgent.

Yeah, I very nearly bought the Secret Weapon vehicle, but decided I wanted tracks... and it doesn't have a matching Russ option. The Ratguard vehicles are a bit more 'standard', and their Russ manages too look even more cartoony than the original one. I love it, and may well pick one up if I ever get my Praetorians painted.

The point being, really, that yes, there are other options out there... but none of them look like these tanks. And more options are a good thing, ultimately.

It's actually kind of impressive that so many designers out there have managed to find different takes on the same vehicles.

There are a lot of real tank designs out there. I play world of tanks, and there are a lot of tanks in that world

There are, yes. But when you have a bunch of people trying to design something that is reminiscent of another thing, it's not unusual for them all to come out somewhat similar. Like all the various not-Space Marines out there.

There's a lot more variety in the various vehicle options, and that's awesome.

Regarding the wheeled tank from Secret Weapons Ketara mentioned: I got one of those, here are some pictures from other perspectives

Spoiler:

It looks quite modern I think.

Edit: But be warned, the weapons are much smaller/slimmer than what you would expect from a Leman Russ Proxy as you can see on the lower right of the second picture

We've covered by this point that there are a bunch of different kits with different aesthetic in this niche, but I think it would be best to take any extended discussion of the various alternatives to the P&M or 40k General sections, to allow this thread to get back on track.

So far as the Kickstarter goes - They've started offering printable files of the not-Primarchs as stretch goals. Which is good for those who are interested in such things, I suppose, but seems a bit risky seeing as how those models already got shut down in the previous Kickstarter.

New 'Legate' model coming out, a Knight as it were. Wonder what he's representative of?

Update on the Kickstarter - As far as I can determine, they got everything made up, and the last of the backer packages shipped (probably) last November. Thanks to Covid playing havoc with international post, everything took longer than usual to arrive. I received mine at the end of January, but can't actually build them...

I pledged for two tanks - a Viking and a Cougar. The Viking has a flat plate on each side that goes between the track assembly and the hull. I received two left sides instead of a left and a right.

And the Cougar appears to come as two bags of parts, one with the turret and top of the hull, and one with everything else... I received two turret bags.

Space Legats haven't responded to any attempt to communicate, on Kickstarter, Facebook or direct email. They haven't posted on the Kickstarter page since December, and even before that seemed to be studiously ignoring any quality issues, only addressing shipping times. There's a single post on their Facebook from February, promoting their Patreon, but other than that it's just radio silence.

It's a shame, because the tanks are nice, from what I can see. The casting is good, I still love the designs, and I was really looking forward to using these in the 2nd Ed IG army I'm putting together.
