Quite new to AoS and at skimish level and open play.
Basically Stormcasts and legions of Nagash. Would say Dicsiples of Tzeentch, but lacking a leader. Quite fancy the Changeling in that respect.
A Nagash army is pretty easy to build up, model wise, as you can get skeletons quite easily. I'm blessed with a copy of Castle Ravenloft, which has a rather awesome bone dragon in it, which can double up as a Terrorgeist to fill out the points. Could stretch to a small Vanguard pitched battle with Chainrasps, Skeletons, Terrorgeist and a Tombwright King.
Storm Casts are awesome but currently the proud owner of a Knight-Incantor and two under-strength Liberators and Sequitors units. Would ideally like Astriea Solblight and enough storm casts for basic vanguard games, but its hard to budget in alongside 40K, Kill Team and AT.

4th Ed High Elves for me. I remember getting the metal Eltharion model for christmas one year, so heavy you could use it to beat your opponent to death in the event of a loss.
I remember my friend got the Lizardman set about 18 months after me and we had many a tough fight, my reapeater bolt thrower and Eltharion taking a savage toll on his forces. Then when I added Teclis...
Its for this reason that I feel like it is almost inevitable that I will be getting the Lumineth Realm Lords. I dont even play AoS, but those shiny models call to me.

Orc and Goblins. Only painted a Giant and a single Troll.
Then Dark Elves. Painted the entire army so fast I forgot I even owned them and left them in the back of a closet for years.
Tomb Kings, but only using graph paper with a friend to try the army out.
Then Slaanesh Demons because I had amassed a lot of Diaz models over the years. Then I sold them because I didn't like any of the new Slaanesh models and still don't.
Finally, Daughters of Khaine. Which are all in a box at a friends house because my local gaming areas are full of the kind of players I absolutely can't stand playing with (power gamers who buy whatever is new and popular, airbrush a single color if they paint at all, and rules lawyer every thing to death... And the closest store to me preaches the use of violence to silence peoples opinions so I refuse to go anywhere near there).

Empire and Orcs & Goblins. Still have the Man Mangler and Leadbelcher... somewhere.
My 'almost everything painted' army is Beastmen, but that was before some of the current big plastic (and finecast) beasties. Have a Beast giant I converted out of the old metal giant, a boar head from the orc chariot and a lot of greenstuff sculpted as fur.

High Elves and Goblins. Bought the 4th edition starter but due to my age at the time and zero funds beyond a bit of pocket money they never really developed from the starter sets. I especially remember the cardboard cutouts for the monsters.
My first AoS army was the same army I play now - a variation of Death. Although these days I'm moving more over to ghosts.

Skaven when they were first released. A friends father introduced us to the game here in the US that he played while in England. We got to use his beautifully painted humans and Orcs until we built our own.
Chose skaven because right next to the game store was a wine and cheese shop. I got a list of cheeses and went all Monty Python naming the figures when I painted them up. I’m sad now that I had traded that army away for space marines a couple years later .
First AOS army I started was Sylvaneth. That stalled, but now building Maggotkin , oh the timing of it all.

1st WHFB army was Empire. I built the whole thing using 6th Edition Starter sets I got really cheap off Ebay. As A result I have an absolute TON of Spearmen and Handgunners. In fact I have so many Spearmen I made a unit of Halberds using them as well.
as for AoS I have 1500pts of Ogors I built way before we even got a Battletome. They rocked then, and they rock now!

My first AoS army that I still have and havn't touched for about 6 months is my Soublight Vampire list. All vampires are made out of the now OOP dragon princes, and about half are painted pretty crappily. Plus, I got a second hand Vampire count army that I still have to paint, rebase and everything. I still have no clue how the hell I'm going to paint Mannfred.
First Real, Completed army is my Akhelian Corps Deepkin. I took my time with that one for the simple fact that I had to paint each model before I magnatized it to the flight stand. now I got around 2,500 points of a fully painted army, including a leviadon and Eidolon in time for a canceled tournament, and I'm dragging my heels on finishing them. I love that army though, despite how outdated it is.
Now I got my eyes set on the Lumineth, and I can't wait to have some fun with those blokes. I am selling my first 40k army for them, and I hope they are fun!

Huge Bone Giant
|
This is my first Fantasy army:
I started playing Fantasy with the release of 7th ed. I had looked at pictures and read the odd article in White Dwarf for over ten years and never really had much interest in starting Fantasy for a variety of reasons. The biggest one was a lack of players that sorted itself out when I went to my local store to play 40k and eventually got brought over to play Fantasy as well. I didn't have a clue how the game played but I remembered that the only army that left a lasting impression on me from reading White Dwarf was Tomb Kings. I considered Warriors of Chaos and Lizardmen, too, but eventually the choice basically made itself.
I actually bought a box of Tomb Guard before the release of 7th ed, before I even had the army book, with no idea if I'd even like how the unit played, simply because of their awesome appearance. After I got the army book and saw the cool artwork, I bought a Bone Giant to convert to the pose in the art (since, let's face it, stock it doesn't look all that good).
The aspect that I liked a lot and that eventually shaped the army was the undead constructs. I thought that was really cool and did my best to get as many as I could fit into the army. The other thing was that I've never been a fan of regiment blocks and tried to minimize how many I would have in the army. Combined with the somewhat lacking appearance of the plastic skeletons I spent the bare minimum points on my Core selections and put everything else in constructs, my beloved Tomb Guard and of course the heroes I couldn't do without.
I had a great time with the army even though as advised before getting it, it was one of the worst armies around and not beginner friendly, I eventually learned to use it and started winning a good chunk of my games. Not against good players with tournament armies, of course, but most matches, even against seasoned opponents, I at least stood a chance of winning and didn't just set up my models to get obliterated.
When the 8th ed army book was released my army got cruddaced and even though there were some nice new models, the lack of updates to the core of the army (even worse in light of Vampire Counts having shiny, new, non-bovvlehead skeletons), the stylistic departure from the Tomb Guard that got me into the army in the first place, and rules that prevented me from playing a mostly construct army meant that after a half-hearted attempt to make the dull new book work for me, I put my Tomb Kings in storage and bought a battalion box of Warriors of Chaos. I was happy with that army, too, playing a full Slaanesh themed army, but never painted more than a model or two for a number of reasons. Realistically, after putting so much work into learning to play Tomb Kings, Warriors of Chaos was easy mode and I didn't lose games anymore. That's not ideal. I also became ever more disenchanted with GW at the time, as it was the worst of the Kirby years, and so I didn't find all that many games anymore. And 40k was waning right alongside Fantasy at my local store, so the motivation wasn't there anymore. Thematically, I thought the army was great, however, and I did enjoy playing aspect of Fantasy that I never really got to see with my Tomb Kings.
I looked into starting up a Dogs of War army (counts as Empire, really) and build some Dark Elves for the few weeks the escalation league at my local store lasted before it got derailed, but that never went anywhere.
When End Times Nagash was released I gave Tomb Kings another try as it allowed me to mix in Vampires and make a Lahmia themed army, but that didn't last long. I fiddled around with a couple of models, played on game against Skaven, and then the rumors hit that End Times was aptly named and GW actually was serious about blowing up that world. That basically ended Fantasy at my local store overnight.
The release of Age of Sigmar was a total catastrophe and no one would even touch the game. By the time GW introduced the barest semblance of structure and people actually considered giving the game a try, my Tomb Kings had long been squatted and all the fun, chaotic aspect deleted from my Warriors of Chaos. Which left me with very little to take an interest in. I'm always down for Undead and tried a mixed, mostly ghoul army for a while, then assembled some of those models I bought for the Dogs of War as what would these days be called a Shyish themed Cities of Sigmar army, but Age of Sigmar never took off at my local store (mind you, I'm part of the problem - the game hardly speaks to me and with my Fantasy army squatted, there's little to attract me model-wise).
I like many models GW makes and I'm currently waiting to see what GW does with vampires in Age of Sigmar. I could see myself playing the game again, but at this time there simply isn't this one army that speaks to me. I had hoped that when Death would finally have its share of new models, I might find something to my liking, but unfortunately GW went with things I don't find appealing, so I'm very much in wait and see mode at the moment.
Obviously Warhammer The Old World might fix that, but we have so few details and I very much doubt Tomb Kings are a priority, so I'm not holding my breath there either.

As many it seems. 5th Ed Lizards, And Bretonnians. Built up big armies, only sold them in the last few years.
I took a break from the age of 14-18 ish, came back at the end of 6th.
I remember the deal of buying 6th ed as it ended ready for 7th.
I bought the box set with a basically defunct rulebook, and you got the new 7th Ed box for really cheap or free (can anyone remember?)

Depends on how you see.
First army book, first games played(with 100% proxy), first model bought: High elves. Prime reason for this: Only army book local store sold that wasn't already used by one member from the small group. And first model was high elf chariot for identical reason. Literally only high elf the shop had available.
First actual real model playable army that I took to tournament: Chaos warriors(that was cheap. Basically box of chaos knights and warriors, sorcerer on foot, lord on steed and loaned griffon from my high elves. Literally that was it for 2000 pts army ).
Either way both during 5th ed. Chaos warriors I took to 1998 ropecon tournament which was first miniature tournament of any kind.

Other than the High Elf chariot, was your army comprised of elves from any manufacturer? If not, then you didn't really have a High Elf army. (at least IMO)
See, I'm not a GW purist. I've no qualms about using other companies stuff because of sculpt/price/availability/etc- but they still have to be elves, dwarves, human nights, orcs/goblins, or whatever force I'm building. Other wise I could just have a bunch of bottle caps or something & call it a day.

Never got a chance to play WHFB back in the day. Really wanted to but the friends I had at the time we're more interested in 40K. Started 40K right at the end of 4th edition with Orks and played very little since my friends lost interest very quick and I also stopped.
A couple years later I was at a local GW store looking to see if people still played WHFB, there was still a big group but I was too intimidated to try to play out of fear that I would be picked on.
Anyways, years go by and AoS came around, I got interested because they had Greenskinz and I loved the old Orcs & Goblins army. Bought lots of start collecting boxes and played a couple games loved the game but I still wanted to play WHFB.
After finding out Greenskinz were slowly being dropped I have been rebasing them on squares and playing Kings of War and now WHFB 8th edition with a friend.
I bought an Ironjawz army and have been loving them ever since, I have a lot Ironjawz but currently have 1500pts fully painted and based.

Although I technically started collecting High Elves in 5yh edition, I didn't play any games until 6th, with my greenskin Waaagh! At the end of 8th edition it sat at around 12000 points, with only 2k painted. My best friend played Bretonnians non stop the entire time.

Started collecting High Elves in 5e about a year before 6e came out. Spent alot of time painting them and tried out various colour schemes, actually looked nice but very very colourfull. I attended a big game club at the time who was just great snd played every sunday with a passion. Also my Elves became some sort of a meme army due to all colourfull, individual models and promptly got the nickname "The Hippie Elves".

I got some Bretonnians in a trade right before the nuke went off. Decided I didn't want them anyway and sold them.
Bought the StormCast/Khorne starter when AoS launched. Didn't assemble a single model.
I've corralled the spouse into playing Age of Sigmar with an Idoneth Deepkin army that hasn't been put together or painted yet. I bought myself a Flesh-Eater Courts army that I had some fun painting but have kind of stalled out. Everything about painting them feels very same-y.
I'd like to get around to it but I've also started working on my spehss muhrines so who knows when that'll be.

I actually only started in 7th. So, I followed the 7th Edition release schedule, pretty much.
So, Vampire Counts were my first army. Then Daemons, Dark Elves, Warriors of Chaos, then Skaven.
Actually, thinking about it now, I don't think I have ever actually played Warriors on the table though. I later picked up some other armies as well, but I've never played them either.

Started getting into Lizardmen at the end of 8th. Previously had Empire in 6th , but I sold it (still weep for it till this day ). When AOS rolled out I was very much into the Darksiders games and Moorcock books so I jumped with both legs in. Got the starter and a stormcast battleforce so it may as well count as being my first AOS army. Since then I've gotten into Bloodbound, High Elves, Skaven, DoT. These are on top of my DoC army

For me this is one big plus to AoS and how alliances work.
I found that my dogs of war had been given new life as they could technically be an army again.
I also made a mistake of selling them.

I tried getting into it in 4th/5th with Dark Elves but the price of admission was just too high for me then so it kinda fizzled out. Still have all my metal Corsairs, Witches, and Executioners.
Then when AoS 1.0 came out I went into Blades of Khorne.
