Are you quite sure about that? Because my understanding is that it's the other way around, with model railoading being by far the largest hobby. At least in how much money the industry generates.

My argument is that they charge more money more then the total size.

But as to size it's hard to really know as both hobbies are made up mostly of small businesses that never report sales so this is antidotal. But there is a lot of chatter amongst the model rail groups about how much it's shrunk in popularity over the past 20 years while tabletop gaming (including RPGs) have been growing. And I'd be surprised with the currently popularity of D&D if there weren't more people on the tabletop side.

In my state I've got at least 10 hobby stores that sell either RPGs or wargames within a 30 minute drive. Model train stores there's 1 and I think there may only be 3-4 in the whole state vs easily 20+ gaming stores. And this is with a population of only around 3 million. So that probably clouds my opinion here.

Things could be different over in Europe but it does feel like model railroads are in a big decline here just by going to various forums and groups while looking for product to buy. Where it is compared to us I really have no idea
