I don't believe they had models for everything. As you said, many ork ships didn't have models. I believe there were also gaps in the Mechanicus and Tyranid lines, admittedly those could easily be kitbashed.

Grey the fan community has already done all that. you can get all the variant ships, ordinance, blast markers etc thanks to 3d printing. the problem like anything else is finding an active community of players. we have loads of people in our group that play BFG.....when we are not playing all the other stuff we play. it goes in waves as we have so many choices. right now classic battletech is the big draw at our FLGS.

I know there are many many great 3rd party sources. But unless there is also official models it is very difficult to get traction to get new players into a game that is essentially unsupported right now.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Not if the new blood is made to understand very early on that this is a game that has been ended by GW, and has been taken over by the fanbase instead.
And if a model representation is needed, Scourge Scenics is a solid candidate as they are not a direct copy, nor do they look too far apart from the GW modes. Only downside to them is they do not sell the flyer stands. I own approx 1000p of their tau line and i do not regret buying them.

The adeptus Mechanicus line was complete.

And at the moment BFG had a lot of traction. Be it though the digital starter kit or Battlefleet Heresy.

The first battle rulebook also is popular.

Count the remastered rulebook and fleetbook available on the everlasting rules hub.

Last two years BFG really revived.

And with miniatures available from stores like Vanguard miniatures, battlefleet Galaxy, scourge scenics, godforgeminis and wintersbioforge

Plus all the STL from Italianmoose, soulforge, NoFixedForge, arcaneshipyard, and more

The department of ship availability is bright and. Shiny.

I agree that an official release would get lots of people playing (at least until the next ‘new shiny’ came along) but I wouldn’t let that stop you playing if you want to.
I am not sure about BFG as I’m not active in the community but just going on my experience with Epic I am sure there are groups that list players and events - I am sure some guys here posting can advise.
I was absolutely stunned how active the Epic community is despite it being a ‘dead’ game with no new releases for 20 years. FB groups with many thousands of active players and collectors, and they tend to be really chilled places too in contrast with the groups for ‘live’ games.

BFG is the one game in which it really doesn’t matter if GW switches up the scale. The models were explicitly only ever a representation and to look cool, with all the relevant mechanics using the base or the very tip of the Flying stand.

Mechanically yes... visually no. When ships get close together its horrible, with hulls bashing against each other and ships getting in each others way.

If I ever did get into 3D printing BFG miniturous would be high on my list, with cruisers redone so their length matches the base diameter...

Liki mini/travel Battlefleet Gothic. Cruisers of 32mm length and battleships of 60mm.
That?

Yes! Though I would have them on a full sized table

And the battleships would be scaled up from the cruisers so wouldn't match the larger base sizes like the cruiser match the small ones...

Varying base heights could also work.

The late lamented mobile version used that trick when there were too many ships close together.

Tyranids would need an entirely new line refresh, because original BFG Tyranid ships were just bad to the point the BFGA2 game made entirely new designs for the nids.

I love spaceship battles so a new edition of BFG or something similar would definitely get my attention. I would probably still play with the models I have if anyone in my area was still into it.

As long as they make ships that aren't astronomically expensive I won't be disappointed in any rules issues. I've got no problem chasing down the original rulebook...
