No lie, I thought hard about it. Or at least offering that as an option for April. But from a practical POV, how would that theme translate into minis? Just a little to abstract a concept.
If we do end up with a full open round, always an option though. Which is another point in the column of "open round w/ some suggested guidelines”
My tentative plan right now as we start the 98th round is wait until next month to put up the 100th thread a month early as a “Get Ready", along side the 99th comp. Get people to post ideas, start the buzz, provide a place to link to. But ask people not to start yet. Once June hits, give the “GO!” and let people start painting, posting WIPs etc in that thread.

I think it's nice in that it can describe archetypal units at both the lower and higher end. You could paint a Tactical Marine who exemplifies the basic skill level any Marine is trained to to fulfill his function, or you could paint a Captain or Company Champion who serves as the model other Marines aspire to. As opposed to, say, a Librarian or Techmarine who is specialized in a way that is not typical for other Marines.
I think that's not a bad concept. It's reasonably open and can be applied to any number of organizations (as an analogous example to the above, you could do a plain pirate or a pirate captain, but not the ship's cook or carpenter), but it gives some guidance as to what is and isn't game.

For Eldar, you could paint the classic guardians, or any of the aspect warriors, who are literally supposed to be the paradigm of a certain aspect of Khaine's character. Or you could do the Avatar himself...
Not sure about other factions...

I don’t think it’s impossible to do, I just feel that a lot of people would struggle to find something. Obviously, my opinion.

How's this for a pitch?
Paradigm - Whether it's the minimum required standard that needs to be met or the heights of experience, from standard troops happy with their lot to officers that have become an example after which their peers model themselves, your models should reflect an ideal to which the bulk of their faction can aspire.
Could probably use some fiddling. Not trying to convince you or anything and I'll let others judge if that's something that sparks ideas, but I figure if we're looking for options, I may as well try to help out with a little work of my own. Worst case scenario, you have one more option for another month's poll.

Here is a draft post for the 100th challenge. It’s a bit of a compromise that might not make anyone happy, but should maximize participation, and hopefully fun. Thoughts/feedback welcome.

<big bold red text stating “Don’t start painting yet” to be edited out at actually start>
Welcome all to the 100th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
As this is the centennial anniversary, we wanted to do something special to mark it. The problem is balancing the desire to keep things open, to promote more people being able to participate, and a tighter theme to mark the occasion. As a compromise, we are going to do a modified open round. Everyone can pick there own theme from either one that was used in a pervious challenge (listed below) or one of two new topics chosen special for this event. Please include your topic with your proof pic, as they will be listed in the voting thread. One of the hopes of this round is that people will take some time to look back at the previous volume of work and take inspiration from it. We encourage you to revisit prior entries you have made, to show how far you have come, do your own version of an entry that inspired you, or any form of nostalgic callback.
“Celebration” Your entry should be celebrating something. Victory in battle, milestones of life, or just a good party. From swords raised in bloody triumph, to funny hats and streamers. On a podium or jumping out of a cake. Celebrate in style
“Paradigm" - Not necessarily the exceptional leaders, but your models should reflect an ideal to which the bulk of their faction can aspire. The goal, the gauge, the archetypical idealized version of what they represent. The perfect copy of what it is, be it grot or god.
<C/P full list of past topics here under spoiler tag to save space, links to the past challenges for full descriptions>
<C/P normal boilerplate of rules here>
How Long Do I Have?
This thread is open before the challenge starts to allow people to share the link and spread the work. Painting should not start until June. This challenge formally begins 1st of June and will end at midnight EST on June 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Sounds good to me. I'm not the tough part of the crowd, though.
Also... dons editor hat... a couple of fixes to polish the draft:

Great discussion and have enjoyed reading this so far.
I have one small suggestion.
I feel the word ‘paradigm’ is somewhat confusing. Although I understand it is being used correctly here I instinctively lean towards the more common usage of the word as that employed to describe systems rather than individuals.
Might I suggest something more broadly associated with excellence, for instance ‘Epitome’
Only a small observation, and unimportant, but for what it is worth there it is…

The word choice is intentional. I agree that it is not the best/most descriptive name. What it is however is the user name of the person who started the competition years ago, and with the exception of a few months where other people stepped up, organized and ran it until this year, where he stepped down and passed the torch to me. So “Paradigm” is being offered as a topic as a tribute to all the hard work he put in.

Aha! Now THAT does make sense! Forgive my ignorance. I obviously had no idea and if it was mentioned in the earlier posts must have missed that detail. Just trying to get involved in the community and add feedback … no disrespect intended.

No worries. If you are new you would not know, and none of the old hands explained why it was brought up.
Your feedback was good. Next time I’m at my desk, I’ll add “epitome” to the list of ideas for other comps. It’s broad enough to cover a lot of ground, but focused enough to spark some great ideas. Not sure when it will be in a poll, but the more ideas the better!

That sounds great, I just bought a 50% off blood knights that I was planning to kitbash into a wood elf regiment for my cities elf army.
And a banner-rider of that sort would certainly fit the paradigm and celebration description.
I'm game.

Already thinking what I could do for either of the suggested titles. I am really enjoying taking part in all of this!

That sounds like a great idea! I have my own 'Triumph' to paint, though I've got lots of other big models that would fit the discussed themes that I probably ought to paint first - like an Avatar that I've had sitting around for a while, for example... That said, I might just follow your lead!

I've managed to find and send a PM to 360 out of 379 people who have previously entered this comp, couldn't find 19 of them due to spelling mistakes in names I had written down or they have deleted their Dakka Account? I think that's good enough and its taken me a few days to complete.
