Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 100 June 23: Centennial
I’m putting this thread up a month early to help spread the news. You can post this link on social media, discord groups, facebook, or however else you want to spread the word. The goal is to get the best turnout we can. Old faces returning and/or new blood just starting out. This is still a monthly comp, so don’t take this advance post as a starting gun. It will run in June. On the bright side, May’s topic is “Mistakes were Made” so if you end up starting your June entry early, just head over to the May topic and post your proof/WIPs over there. (This was not intentional by the way, just works out nicely)
While we wait for June to start, we can post proof pictures, chat about ideas of what to paint, and look back over the years we’ve been doing this thing! To everyone joining us, welcome aboard and thank you.
--
Welcome all to the 100th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
As this is the centennial anniversary, we wanted to do something special to mark it. The problem is balancing the desire to keep things open, to promote more people being able to participate, and a tighter theme to mark the occasion. As a compromise, we are going to do a modified open round. Everyone can pick their own theme from either one that was used in a previous challenge (listed below) or one of two new topics chosen specially for this event. Please include your topic with your proof pic, as they will be listed in the voting thread. One of the hopes of this round is that people will take some time to look back at the previous volume of work and take inspiration from it. We encourage you to revisit prior entries you have made, to show how far you have come, do your own version of an entry that inspired you, or any form of nostalgic callback.
“Celebration” - Your entry should be celebrating something. Victory in battle, milestones of life, or just a good party. From swords raised in bloody triumph, to funny hats and streamers. On a podium or jumping out of a cake. Celebrate in style.
“Paradigm" - Not necessarily the exceptional leaders, but your models should reflect an ideal to which the bulk of their faction can aspire. The goal, the gauge, the archetypical idealized version of what they represent. The perfect copy of what it is, be it grot or god.
Here is a list of all the previous competitions and associated threads. The topics are on the line, but if you want more details you can click through to the vote/competition threads for more info.
March 23 -- No Poll -- Challenge -- Vote -- Space Marine
April 23 -- Poll -- Challenge -- Vote -- Doomsday
May 23 -- Poll -- Challenge -- Vote -- Mistakes Were Made
June 23 -- Discussion -- Challenge -- Vote -- Special 100th competition
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This thread is open before the challenge starts to allow people to share the link and spread the word. Painting should not start until June. This challenge formally begins 1st of June and will end at midnight EST on July 2nd. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Already got an entry lined up for the Celebration topic. Though it is more of a somber celebration, I suppose, since the model I'll be doing is the Triumph of Saint Katherine.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 2/8/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1000 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~4200 | Leagues of Votann: ~1800 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5100

Lion this month and the Triumph next? Ambitious! Keep an eye on the time. I know you sometimes struggle on the deadlines, so don’t let them slip away from you.
I need to grab a Triumph one of these days to paint myself. Need to figure how how to fit it into my hobby time/budget. Lot of stuff going on, and I know I couldn’t do it in a month.

Lion will be easy enough, motivation is high on that one. Triumph is gonna be tough but I think I can do it.

@Captain Brown: if you need any help working with plastic, just ask. While the Falcon does date back to 2nd edition, it is made out of that new material you might not be familiar with…
--
So I’m torn on what to enter. Revisiting an old entry sounds great, but I’ve been in all of these, so that’s a lot of ground to cover. Looking back to year 1:
Spoiler:
I don’t have ant honor guard, but do have some bladeguard vets, or a HH praetor. Not a 1:1 comparison, but close.
No boxnaughts, and no plans to get more
While I don’t have a bike autarch, on my short list to do is convert one from the shining spears box. My arm could be twisted to run to the shop and get started on that build in time for the comp.
There might be some more chaos in the depths of the PoS, but I’d be hard pressed to fine something as classic as that nurgle champ.
I do have the modern plastic rangers. Modern sculpts, better painting skills. This is doable.
I’ve got more Eldar dreads then I need. I could use this as an excuse to get a wraithknight, and glow up the concept. bit of a stretch.
Captain vs. demon? I have more captains, and a box of old Clan Wars minis. Might have another Oni.
Sadly, out of chaplains. Might grab one in 10th, kitbash a new TDA one. But not in time for June.
Cato Sicarius? Again, I have spare captains, but none to match his ego (or wargear)
Librarian on bike? I’ve got a TDA lib. Not kitbashing a new biker. Could mix this with the chaplain to get the primaris chaplain on bike that’s been on my wishlist.
I’ve got a chapheracti squad in the wings, but no more characters. Of course, I did do a squad for the comp...
Contemptor is another 1:1 entry. i’ve got the new kit from the HH built, primed, and ready to go.
So low hanging fruit are the rangers or the contempor dread, as those have modern version in the prime pile right now.
Slighty farther, but still close are doing a fancy marine, as I’ve got loads of them.
New purchases which I’m not opposed to doing are for an autarch, WK, bike chaplain.
Thoughts and or opinions?

Josh,
You need to visit my signature links more.
Nevelon wrote:@Captain Brown: if you need any help working with plastic, just ask. While the Falcon does date back to 2nd edition, it is made out of that new material you might not be familiar with…
Yes, I have modeled with this fantastically light and soft material before...but the knife goes through it so easily it does not seem like a challenge.
Cheers,
CB
PS: afraid this is my second Falcon...the first one was converted to a Wave Serpent many moons ago...so I am looking to fill that one gap in the army.
Modern plastic rangers would be my choice for you Nevelon...xeno camo opportunity.

I'll have a model to go for Celebration. For obvious reasons that suits me better than revisiting any of my previous entries. However, with much of May still remaining I might, with no guarantees that it will actually happen, see if I can't have another model or two ready for painting. I so rarely get to paint more than one model a month. This wouldn't be the worst month to have a few more.

That gets a vote from me as well because I liked the Marine camo you did recently, Nevelon.
Nehekhara lives! Sort of!
Why is the rum always gone?

I can’t think of anything for celebration as such, but I’m thinking of revisiting We are Legion to see how many of my 2 boxes of Zombicide: Invader gribbleys I can grind through with contrast style paints.
Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Hmm. Raises a good point:
If people want to revisit a topic that broke the rules (like the few times we’ve waived the 5 model restriction) they can do so for this comp as well.
I can’t think of other rules we have lifted. Some comps (like the technical rounds) have imposed extra ones.
Hi all. I've not been active here for a few years. Sadly I don't have time to paint since my second nurgling arrived almost 2 years ago.
I'm not even going to try to enter this, but I will be keeping an eye on it. Excited to see everyone's entries.
Great job by Midget Gems to message everyone. Thanks for including me.
Good luck everyone.
Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts
question, when it comes to epic scale and number of models, how is that counted? One strip of what i want to try to paint contains 10 figurines and they cant be seperated from the strip.
So would in this case one strip with 10 figurines count as one model??

Yup. For swarms and small scale stuff with multiple minis per base you can count them as one. Or a giant oliphont with a howdah full of easterlings.
SKR.HH wrote: Gosh... I have the perfect mini for this... BUT IT'S FINECAST...
You make me work with Failcast again... Ugh...
Part of the reason for this comp is to push people out of their comfort zones. But sorry if you need to work in Finecast. I’ve had mixed luck with it myself.
Remember, you can choose from any prior topic, so if you want to do something that doesn’t need finecast, you should have a good range of subjects to work with as a fallback.
Withdrawing my entry. I did a primer test to see that everythgin was ok for next month, but it was not.
Something is fubar with the epic line models from warlord as both GW chaos black and vallejo black rattle can primers corrodes/eats up the plastic models!
Sendt an email to warlord about this issue, will see what comes out of it.

Thanks for the invite! Will try to participate despite of long-haul work trips.
I'll need a "portable painting box" of a sort to hopefully make it work.
