Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 11: January 2016: Up Close And Personal!
Happy new year, and welcome to the 11th Unofficial Dakka Painting Challenge! For those who have not followed any previous challenges, this is a friendly competition for painters of all skill levels and experience, and anyone on Dakka is welcome to join in.
The theme for this month's challenge is: Up Close and Personal. How you interpret this theme is up to you, but I suggest sticking to models toting close combat weapons, or ranged weapons that are built for close quarters combat like flamethrowers, shotguns, pistols, blunderbusses ect.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st January and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st January. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Who doesn't want to get up close and personal with a commissar?
Honestly I'd like to do my FW Fulgrim, but it seems cheeky to enter him in this and Nerdcademy challenge.
I might change to Palantine Blades, but I'll see how building goes, and pair them together.
I could enter a different commissar monthly for the next three years and not repeat, before you say anything.

Please do.
On another note, I've got Lego Storm Trooper heads and I might find some left over SM bitz. I am doing this guys!
Yay! I'm still undecided with my entry... at first I thought I was going to do a helbrute... but I'm not sure if that is in the budget... I'll see what I have in my collection of bits. Plenty came in this holiday season.

Here's my entry: a Tau Breacher Team. I think they qualify as close combat troops, as their weapons are only very effective up close. Proof pic:
Here's the problem: I have a squad of 10 dudes plus their Guardian Drone; the limit for the contest is 5 models. I'm thinking what I'll do is paint all of them at the same time, then pick the Drone, Shas'ui, and the three warriors that turn out the best to be my official entry.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

So I am thinking of doing my vanguard veterans, only bad part is that I seemed to have forgotten to prime their shoulder pads so I will have to do that quick on a somewhat warm day
My entry is a Domaru with chain rifle(which is some sort of shotgun like thing, she also has 2 swords), and a couple of crazy koalas(which are koala shaped mines, can't get much more close and personal than a cute mine)

Game on. First Para comp and therefore paint of the new year I'll enter my Scyllax covenant. May include the ArchMagos in the background as they are his bodyguard.

Must see what I have to enter. Definitely going to try and participate more this year (You could say I'm resolute in doing so...). Gotta dig through my "sure would like to paint this guy" pile.
"Holy Sh*&, you've opened my eyes and changed my mind about this topic, thanks Dakka OT!"
For a change from my normal I think I will do a Blood Angels Terminator providing I get the time, I wanted to paint a few this year since I was planning on using the Betrayal at Calth SM as HHBA's
I'm in. To make up for last month's lack of ambition, I'm painting up my warboss. I got an AOBR warboss like a year ago on Ebay, and have been meaning to reposition the arm ever since cause it's the dumbest pose GW has ever come up with ("looking over here, but arm is outstretched and pointing in the opposite direction!"). Here it is sawed off and glued back on.
Thanks Paradigm for the competition; these things really motivate me to attack the stuff on my workbench that I am most hesitant to do but need to accomplish most. I just hope this turns into an amazing conversion rather than a "why do ork players think they can just glue a bunch of crap together?" conversion.
I'm going to really push the boat out this month and attempt to complete two models! 2 Assault marines for my Crimson Tears MK. VI squad. There's a third I'm currently painting, but he's too far gone to be entered.
Ok, so decided to go back to my DAs for this month. I am going to paint up Veteran Sergeant Dorn and 4 of his squad. He's the priority and will need a little reworking, but think it'll be interesting, the others will be done if there is time (PS The Dark Eldar is going to be part of the aesthetic and not based, so from memory won't count towards the figure count
