Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 49 March 2019: Space Marines
It's that time again! With round 49 comes the 5th year of the Unofficial Painting Challenge's rotation, and that means we're off once again with a new League, a new set of 12 rounds and a return to the annual Space Marine theme for the first of them.
For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters. See below for the full rules on how to enter, I look forward to maybe seeing some new faces entering shortly!
As mentioned, this month marks the return of the annual Space Marine round. However, you're not just limited to blokes in garishly coloured Power Armour, and you can interpret the theme however you like. In the past we've had Orks in disguise as Terminators, US Marines given a sci-fi makeover, some creative use of Astartes as basing material for various enemy forces.. basically, so long as your entry consists of some manner of Marine in Space, you're good to go! And yes, this does include Chaos Marines, HH minis, vehicles, Dreadnoughts ect, the full gamut of Marine minis on offer.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of March. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

You must have some sort of spare IG to do this, no?

Going to enter my incomplete collection of Space Marine Heroes. Here's the proof:
I'll paint all six and then whichever bolter guy looks the least good will be dropped to reduce my final entry to five models.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

A 40K player without Marines...I know incredibly rare. I have painted and sold off several Marine armies over the years, including one entirely made up of metal scouts.

I do, but I have found a solution...after digging through boxes and trays I have found a figure that I started for another project about 14 years ago that was never finished.

Can anyone name where all these parts came from?
Cheers,

Hmm. I might see if I can dig something up for this round.

I say there is 2nd ed biker legs with the flat waist, 3rd ed torso the ball type, the helmet hand is tough could be a bike hand or a ML hand.
The backpack is 2nd ed, 3rd ed bolter and a 3rd ed helmet
I dont know the grenades possibly catachan?
I will hopefully get through this month faster than the last

Cruentus and Rybrook,
You two pretty well nailed it.
Helmet was from the Rhino accessory sprue. IIRC that the hand was a biker that I tweaked. The body and legs were a biker...I am thinking I might do a little more around the waist. Grenades must have been Catachan due to their size. Since my Gaming group has three players with Marines I have just received a sword and a newer backpack.
So, this will be the first marine painted since before the plastic scout models, as the last Marine force I painted was an entire metal Scout army.
Good luck everyone for this month and for the start of another year for the challenge, hooray
Nice combination of parts CB
Looks suitably Mariney to me Modock
I'm gonna give myself a break (mostly) from conversions and go for some more Marines for my custom Chapter, The Knights Sanguine.
My proof for some Assault Veterans, they won't be painted as death company I just liked the detail on the parts and its my own chapter so figured I could do what I liked with them .
hmmm...I'd been saving that sweet new noise marine for this month...but fate has dealt me a painting commission which I'll be picking up today, a Lord of Skulls...now, I could try and reach for a technicality there because it is a Chaos *Space Marines* unit...but also, ehhh...it's a commission, so I probably shouldn't enter it in this...yeah...nah, I won't...it'd be a bit improper or something I think.
...hopefully I can get that done in good time, and still have enough time to do the noise marine justice by the end of the month...but we'll see vOv
...it's good to be green!

Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Yeah, don't let that be the thing that stops you entering. I've entered with commission pieces before, and I'm sure many others have. You're still painting it, after all!

well, alright then, cool...I'll post up a proof pic once I'm done building and priming the monstrosity
...like I said though, I had originally planned on entering the noise marine this month...so if I can somehow finish the khornemower with good time to spare, I may wind up changing my entry...but we'll see how it goes I guess

hmm, maybe that's why it was feeling a bit weird...I won't be able to really paint it "how I would paint it"...I'll basically just be copying the "box scheme", because that's what I was asked to do...and that's a very different approach, compared to anything else I've entered in this so far...I don't know if I've ever gone full "box scheme" on a model before!
